        IRS-2 Partially Compensates for the Insulin Signal Defects in IRS-1<sup>-/-</sup> Mice Mediated by miR-33

        Insulin signaling is coordinated by insulin receptor substrates (IRSs). Many insulin responses, especially for blood glucose metabolism, are mediated primarily through Irs-1 and Irs-2. Irs-1 knockout mice show growth retardation and insulin signaling defects, which can be compensated by other IRSs in vivo; however, the underlying mechanism is not clear. Here, we presented an Irs-1 truncated mutated mouse ($Irs-1^{-/-}$) with growth retardation and subcutaneous adipocyte atrophy. $Irs-1^{-/-}$ mice exhibited mild insulin resistance, as demonstrated by the insulin tolerance test. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) activity and phosphorylated Protein Kinase B (PKB/AKT) expression were elevated in liver, skeletal muscle, and subcutaneous adipocytes in Irs-1 deficiency. In addition, the expression of IRS-2 and its phosphorylated version were clearly elevated in liver and skeletal muscle. With miRNA microarray analysis, we found miR-33 was down-regulated in bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) of $Irs-1^{-/-}$ mice, while its target gene Irs-2 was up-regulated in vitro studies. In addition, miR-33 was down-regulated in the presence of Irs-1 and which was up-regulated in fasting status. What's more, miR-33 restored its expression in re-feeding status. Meanwhile, miR-33 levels decreased and Irs-2 levels increased in liver, skeletal muscle, and subcutaneous adipocytes of $Irs-1^{-/-}$ mice. In primary cultured liver cells transfected with an miR-33 inhibitor, the expression of IRS-2, PI3K, and phosphorylated-AKT (p-AKT) increased while the opposite results were observed in the presence of an miR-33 mimic. Therefore, decreased miR-33 levels can up-regulate IRS-2 expression, which appears to compensate for the defects of the insulin signaling pathway in Irs-1 deficient mice.

        Rethinking of the Uncertainty: A Fault-Tolerant Target-Tracking Strategy Based on Unreliable Sensing in Wireless Sensor Networks

        Uncertainty is ubiquitous in target tracking wireless sensor networks due to environmental noise, randomness of target mobility and other factors. Sensing results are always unreliable. This paper considers unreliability as it occurs in wireless sensor networks and its impact on target-tracking accuracy. Firstly, we map intersection pairwise sensors` uncertain boundaries, which divides the monitor area into faces. Each face has a unique signature vector. For each target localization, a sampling vector is built after multiple grouping samplings determine whether the RSS (Received Signal Strength) for a pairwise nodes` is ordinal or flipped. A Fault-Tolerant Target-Tracking (FTTT) strategy is proposed, which transforms the tracking problem into a vector matching process that increases the tracking flexibility and accuracy while reducing the influence of in-the-filed factors. In addition, a heuristic matching algorithm is introduced to reduce the computational complexity. The fault tolerance of FTTT is also discussed. An extension of FTTT is then proposed by quantifying the pairwise uncertainty to further enhance robustness. Results show FTTT is more flexible, more robust and more accurate than parallel approaches.

        The Artist’s Resale Right Dispute: A Case Study of China, EU and US

        The resale right is a legal system aimed at protecting the rights of the authors of artworks. Since the establishment of the resale right in France in 1920, especially the implementation of the EU’s Resale Right Directive in 2001, the disputes on the system of the resale right have never stopped. In 2016, overtaking the United States and all EU member states, China has become the number one country in terms of global art trade turnover. Furthermore, with the globalization of the art market, disputes on the resale right between China and the EU and the United States, as well as other advanced countries, are inevitable. This paper introduced and compared the differences between the main contents of the EU’s Resale Right Directive and those of EU member states, as well as the United States. This paper also analyzed three examples of disputes on the resale right in France, Germany and the United States, which lead to some questions that are likely to be controversial and worth thinking about when China introduces the resale right into the Copyright Law in the future. But at the same time, this paper also pointed out that even with the above-mentioned disputes that may arise after the introduction of the resale right in China, China’s introduction of the resale right would still have many positive effects, such as helping to stimulate Chinese artists' passion for creation, improving the international competitiveness of Chinese artists and their artworks, and promoting the negotiation of China-EU FTA, etc. Based on the above disputes and positive effects, this paper points out that China is necessary and feasible to introduce the resale right, and we can learn from the EU's policies and measures to achieve a better construction of the resale right system in order to protect the vital interests of Chinese artists and further develop the artwork market in China.

      • Innovative displacement-based beam-column element with shear deformation and imperfection

        The pointwise equilibrium polynomial (PEP) element considering local second-order effect has been widely used in direct analysis of many practical engineering structures. However, it was derived according to Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and therefore it cannot consider shear deformation, which may lead to inaccurate prediction for deep beams. In this paper, a novel beam-column element based on Timoshenko beam theory is proposed to overcome the drawback of PEP element. A fifth-order polynomial is adopted for the lateral deflection of the proposed element, while a quadric shear strain field based on equilibrium equation is assumed for transverse shear deformation. Further, an additional quadric function is adopted in this new element to account for member initial geometrical imperfection. In conjunction with a reliable and effective three-dimensional (3D) corotational technique, the proposed element can consider both member initial imperfection and transverse shear deformation for second-order direct analysis of frame structures. Some benchmark problems are provided to demonstrate the accuracy and high performance of the proposed element. The significant adverse influence on structural behaviors due to shear deformation and initial imperfection is also discussed.

        Preparation of W–V functionally gradient material by spark plasma sintering

        Functionally gradient material (FGM) is promisingly effective in mitigating the thermal stress between plasma facing materials (PFM) and structural materials. However, the corresponding research with respect to W/V FGM has not been reported yet. In this work, we firstly report the successful fabrication of W/V FGM by a combined technology of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microhardness and microstructure of the consolidated sample were both investigated. W/V stacks show significantly enhanced microhardness (>100%) compared with pure W plate, which is beneficial to the integral strength of the hybrid structure. Furthermore, we clarify that the different ductility of W and V should be carefully considered, otherwise W/V powder might aggregate and lead to the formation of compositional segregation, and simultaneously unmask the impact of V proportion on the distribution of second phase in WeV binary alloy system.         The Resale Right Policies of the UK, Germany, France and their Implications for China

        1920년에 프랑스는 처음으로 추급권을 창설하였다. 2020년까지 전 세계 90개 이상의 국가가 추급권을 도입하였다. 세계 2위의 예술품 거래 시장이 된 동시에 중국 예술가들의 예술품 가치도 크게 높아졌다. 그러나 이들은 이미 추급권을 도입 한 국가의 예술가와 같은 예술품의 가치 상승에 따른 후속 재판매 중의 경제적 이익을 누릴 수 못 한다. 따라서 본 논문은 예술품 거래의 세계화 시대에 영국, 독일, 프랑스의 추급권 정책, 그리고 중국에게 주는 시사점을 연구하는 것을 연구목적으로, 먼저 영국, 프랑스, 독일 3국의 추급권 정책의 제정 과정과 주요 내용을 살펴봤다. 그 다음에 본문은 추급권과 관련된 유럽과 중국 경내의 3건의 분쟁 사례를 분석했다. 마지막으로 본문은 중국이 추급권을 도입 후의 긍정적인 효과를 지적하였다. 결론적으로 예술품 거래의 세계화라는 배경에서 중국은 추급권을 도입하는 것은 필요한 것이다. 유럽 국가의 추급권 정책을 참고 및 학습하고 추급권과 관련된 분쟁사례를 분석함으로써 향후 추급권의 도입에 대비할 수 있다. 중국이 추급권을 도입하면 중국 예술가들의 경제적 이익이 더 잘 보호될 수 있고 예술품 시장이 더 건전하게 발전할 수 있으며 유럽과 국제 예술품 시장에서 중국의 선도적 지위는 계속 유지될 수 있다. In 1920, France first created the Resale Right. By 2020, more than 90 countries have introduced the Resale Right. While China has become the second-largest art market in the world, the artworks of Chinese artists are also very popular abroad, and the value of artworks has increased hundreds of times. However, these artists were not able to enjoy the same benefits brought about by the rise in the value of artworks in the same way as artists in the UK, Germany, France, and other countries. Therefore, in the era of the globalization art trade, the purpose of this paper is to study the Resale Right policies of the UK, France, and Germany, these three European countries with prosperous art markets, and the implications for China. This paper first examines the making process and main content of the Resale Right policies in EU member states, mainly the UK, France, and Germany. Then, this paper analyzes three dispute cases about the Resale Right and points out the necessity for China to introduce the Resale Right through the third case. Finally, this article points out some implications for China’s introduction of the Resale Right. In conclusion, under the international background of art trade globalization, it is necessary for China to introduce the Resale Right. By learning from the Resale Right policies of European countries, and analyzing international dispute cases surrounding it, China can prepare for the introduction of it in the future. At the same time, there are also reasons to believe that after the introduction of Resale Right in China, the economic interests of Chinese artists will be better protected, and China’s leading position in the European and international art market will also be maintained.

        A Prediction-based Energy-conserving Approximate Storage and Query Processing Schema in Object-Tracking Sensor Networks

        Energy efficiency is one of the most critical issues in the design of wireless sensor networks. In object-tracking sensor networks, the data storage and query processing should be energy-conserving by decreasing the message complexity. In this paper, a Prediction-based Energy-conserving Approximate StoragE schema (P-EASE) is proposed, which can reduce the query error of EASE by changing its approximate area and adopting predicting model without increasing the cost. In addition, focusing on reducing the unnecessary querying messages, P-EASE enables an optimal query algorithm to taking into consideration to query the proper storage node, i.e., the nearer storage node of the centric storage node and local storage node. The theoretical analysis illuminates the correctness and efficiency of the P-EASE. Simulation experiments are conducted under semi-random walk and random waypoint mobility. Compared to EASE, P-EASE performs better at the query error, message complexity, total energy consumption and hotspot energy consumption. Results have shown that P-EASE is more energy-conserving and has higher location precision than EASE.

        RhoGDI2 induced malignant phenotypes of pancreatic cancer cells via regulating Snail expression

        Background: Rho GDP dissociation inhibitor 2 (RhoGDI2) has been shown to contribute to the aggressive phenotypes of human cancers, such as tumor metastasis and chemoresistance. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effects of RhoGDI2 on tumor progression and chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer cells. Methods: The expression of RhoGDI2 in pancreatic cancer cells was detected by Western blot analysis. Gain-of-function and loss-of-function approaches were done to examine the malignant phenotypes of the RhoGDI2-expressing or RhoGDI2-depleting cells. The correlation between RhoGDI2 and Snail was also analyzed. Results: Differential expression of RhoGDI2 protein in pancreatic cancer cell lines was identified. Gain-of-function and loss-of-function experiments showed that RhoGDI2 induced the malignant phenotypes of pancreatic cancer cells, including proliferation, migration, invasion, and gemcitabine (GEM) chemoresistance. The upregulation of RhoGDI2 stimulated the expression of Snail, resulting in the altered expression of epithelial marker E-cadherin and mesenchymal marker Vimentin, which were characteristics of the tumorigenic activity of epithelial-mesenchymal transition. The expression of RhoGDI2 and Snail was upregulated in clinical tumor samples, and higher expression of RhoGDI2 or Snail was significantly associated with poor patient survival in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Conclusion: The findings indicated that RhoGDI2 promoted GEM resistance and tumor progression in pancreatic cancer and that RhoGDI2 might be a potential therapeutic target in patients with PDAC.
