<P>Application of graphene as transparent electrodes is an active research area due to its excellent electrical and optical properties. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is an attractive material since it is a thermochromic material that undergoes a structural phase transition when heat is applied. The phase transition results in the change of electrical and optical characteristics. We report optical characteristics of hybrid materials of graphene and VO2. We observed a 12% improvement in infrared transmittance with VO2 films deposited on graphene sapphire substrates compared to that of bare sapphire substrates. We also found that the phase transition temperature decreases as the number of graphene layers on the substrates increases. In the case of VO2 films on the substrate that was coated with four layers of graphene, the mean phase transition temperature was lowered to 56 C.</P>

This paper describes a community effort to improve earlier versions of the full-text corpus of Genomics & Informatics by semi-automatically detecting and correcting PDF-to-text conversion errors and optical character recognition errors during the first hackathon of Genomics & Informatics Annotation Hackathon (GIAH) event. Extracting text from multi-column biomedical documents such as Genomics & Informatics is known to be notoriously difficult. The hackathon was piloted as part of a coding competition of the ELTEC College of Engineering at Ewha Womans University in order to enable researchers and students to create or annotate their own versions of the Genomics & Informatics corpus, to gain and create knowledge about corpus linguistics, and simultaneously to acquire tangible and transferable skills. The proposed projects during the hackathon harness an internal database containing different versions of the corpus and annotations.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>It has become critically important to develop reliable method to transfer chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene from its growth substrate to the target substrate without leaving undesired polymer residues on the graphene surface. Here, we have found that for the two different transfer method – <I>wet transfer</I> using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and <I>dry transfer</I> using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as support layer, the amount of polymer residues and other impurities left on the graphene surface varies depending on the solvent used to remove those polymers. The exposure of the graphenes to different organic solvents such as acetone and chloroform resulted in different amount of polymer residues and impurities present on the graphene surface, which impact the electronic structure of the transferred graphene. It was found that the graphene obtained using the dry transfer method and acetone as solvent with a 2D to G (<I>I</I> <SUB>2D</SUB>/<I>I</I> <SUB>G</SUB>) intensity ratio of 4.58 and a 2D peak full width-half maximum (FWHM) of 24.66, which was higher than that using the wet transfer method and chloroform as solvent. These results showed that graphene was less affected by the polymer residues and impurities or the dry transfer method rather than the wet transfer method. In addition, using acetone rather than chloroform as solvent in the dry transfer method led to less contaminated graphene.</P>

Intervention treatment such as balloon retrograde or anterograde transvenous obliteration has been used for management of refractory hepatic encephalopathy as well as gastric variceal bleeding. Recently, plug-assisted retrograde transvenous obliteration without a help of balloon was newly developed to treat these patients. Here, we report three cases suffering refractory hepatic encephalopathy who were treated with this new technique.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is suitable treatment method of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) for patients with decreased underlying liver function or unresectable disease. But this procedure can induce some embolic events. We report a case of a gallbladder infarction caused by the embolic event in TACE procedure. A 61-year-old man had been going to undergo 6th TACE for marginal recurrence of HCC. After the procedure, gallbladder infarction occurred and was detected by abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan for response evaluation of the treatment at out-patient-clinic. Then, he was treated with oral antibiotics and conservative therapy at out-patient clinic. In 6th week after the event, abdominal CT scan showed improved state of gallbladder.

<P>A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, short rod-shaped and moderately halophilic bacterial strain, CAU 1105T, was isolated from soil on reclaimed tidal land in Modo, Republic of Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain CAU 1105T grows optimally at a temperature of 37?C at pH?7 in the presence of 3?% (w/v) sea salt. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity analyses, the novel isolate was assigned to the genus Palleronia within the class Alphaproteobacteria and showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Palleronia marisminoris B33T (95.4?%). Strain CAU 1105T contained ubiquinone-10 as the only respiratory quinone and C18?:?1ω7c as the major cellular fatty acid. The DNA G+C content of strain CAU 1105T was 64.3?mol%. On the basis of phenotypic differentiation, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data, strain CAU 1105T represents a novel species of the genus Palleronia, for which the name Palleroniasoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1105T (?=?KCTC 42298T?=?NBRC 110740T). An emended description of the genus Palleronia is also provided.</P>

Stroke causes systemic immunosuppression. T lymphocytes are involved in infarct size in the early stages of stroke. However, the phenotypes of T lymphocytes and their functions in peripheral immune organs and the brain have not been well analyzed in the acute and chronic phases of stroke. Here, we investigated pathological phenotypic alterations in the systemic immune response, especially changes in T lymphocytes, from one day to six months after ischemic stroke in mice. Impairment in thymocyte numbers, development, proliferation, and apoptosis were observed for up to two weeks. The number of mature T cells in the spleen and blood decreased and showed reduced interferon-γ production. Increased numbers of CD4- CD8- CD3+ double-negative T cells were observed in the mouse brain during the early stages of stroke, whereas interleukin (IL)-10+ Foxp3+ regulatory T lymphocytes increased from two weeks during the chronic phase. These phenotypes correlated with body weight and neurological severity scores. The recovery of T lymphocyte numbers and increases in IL-10+ Foxp3+ regulatory T lymphocytes may be important for long-term neurological outcomes. Dynamic changes in T lymphocytes between the acute and chronic phases may play different roles in pathogenesis and recovery. This study provides fundamental information regarding the T lymphocyte alterations from the brain to the peripheral immune organs following stroke.

Several reports supported that continuous exposure to 60 Hz magnetic field (MF) induces testicular germ cell apoptosis in vivo. We recently evaluated duration- and dose-dependent effects of continuous exposure to a 60 Hz MF on the testes in mice. BALB/c male mice were exposed to a 60 Hz MF at 100 μT for 24 hours a day for 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks, and at 2, 20 or 200 μT for 24 hours a day for 8 weeks. To induce the apoptosis of testicular germ cell in mice, the minimum dose is 20 μT at continuous exposure to a 60 Hz MF for 8 weeks, and the minimum duration is 6 weeks at continuous exposure of 100 μT. Continuous exposure to a 60 Hz MF might affect duration- and dose-dependent biological processes including apoptotic cell death and spermatogenesis in the male reproductive system of mice. The safety guideline of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) indicates that the permissible maximum magnetic flux density for general public exposure is 200 μT at 60 Hz EMF (ICNIRP Guidelines, 2010). In the present study, we aimed to examine the expression of pro- and anti-apoptotic genes regulated by the continuous exposure to 60 Hz at 200 μT in Sprague-Dawley rats for 20 weeks. The continuous exposure to 60 Hz at 200 μT does not affect the body and testicular weight in rats. However, exposure to 60 Hz MF significantly affects testicular germ cell apoptosis and sperm count. Further, the apoptosis-related gene was scrutinized after exposure to 60 Hz at 200 μT for 20 weeks. We found that the message level of endonuclease G (EndoG) was greatly increased following the exposure to 60 Hz at 200 μT compared with sham control. These data suggested that 60 Hz magnetic field induced testicular germ cell apoptosis through mitochondrial protein Endo G.
