Understanding the Critical Variables Affecting the Level of Political Risks in International Construction Projects

Deng Xiaopeng,Low Sui Pheng 대한토목학회 2013 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.17 No.5

Contractors in the international marketplace are experiencing more severe political risks than ever before. They have also in response endeavored to mitigate the high degree of political risk exposure in order to survive. It is important however to identify and manage the critical variables affecting political risks associated with international construction projects. Relatively few studies of political risks, particularly in the context of international projects, have been carried out. The objective of this paper is to examine how international contractors attempt to identify and manage the critical variables which affect the level of political risks when they venture out of their home countries. 85 variables contributing to the level of political risks encountered by international contractors were identified in this paper. Based on the findings from an international survey on political risks, this study reveals that the variables, such as degree of stability of the government, project desirability to the host country, policy uncertainty, racism and xenophobia, and unfavorable attitude towards foreign businesses are the most significant variables. Several recommendations are also provided for international contractors in this paper. This research will assist international contractors to manage the political risk factors when expanding overseas.

Developing the Framework of Tacit Knowledge Externalization in International Construction Projects

        Qianwen Zhou,Xiaopeng Deng,Bon-Gang Hwang,Xianbo Zhao,Na Zhang 대한토목학회 2022 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.26 No.9

Although tacit knowledge management has gained increasing attention in international construction projects, little effort has been devoted to the externalization of tacit knowledge for project managers and members. This research aims to explore various factors that affect the process of tacit knowledge externalization (TKE) in international construction projects and analyze the influencing mechanism and degree of these factors on the externalization effect. Based on the comprehensive literature review and in-depth investigations, a theoretical model and ten hypotheses were established. Then, data collected from 302 respondents were used to test the model and hypotheses. The results indicated that the differences among project members (i.e., culture distance and knowledge distance) reduce members’ willingness to convert tacit knowledge, which negatively impacts the externalization effect. Furthermore, organizational management (i.e., organizational climate and incentive mechanism) plays an active role in increasing members’ externalization willingness. Incentive mechanism and information technology are beneficial to increasing the coding level of knowledge, which positively impacts the externalization effect. Moreover, a strong willingness to convert tacit knowledge helps enhance the coding level of knowledge, thereby improving the effect of TKE. This study advances previous research by developing a framework for TKE in international construction projects, thereby offering recommendations for project managers and members to promote the externalization process.

Dynamics of bubble formation and ascent motion on submerged orifices under different Mo number of petrol-based random copolymer solutions

        Zhongyao Zhang,Xiaopeng Chen,Jiezhen Liang,Xiaojie Wei,Kaixi Deng,Jiezhong Zou,Linlin Wang 한국공업화학회 2022 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.111 No.-

The petrol-based random copolymer, e.g., aromatic-hydrocarbon resin, is widely used in industrial production, but the research about its gas–liquid two flow is far from being solved. Herein, the formation, motion, and deformation of a single bubble in six different concentrations of random copolymer solutionswere systemically investigated using high-speed photography (1000 fps), combined with digital imageprocessing technology. The departure time of the bubble first decreases and then increases, and maximumof aspect ratio and specific surface area reduce as the proportion of solute increases. The bubbledeparture time decreases and bubble size increases with viscous force increases in the case of same surfacetension. Based on force balance analysis, added mass force is one of the prime reasons to affect bubbleoscillation during the acceleration phase after bubble detachment, whereas the effect of added massforce decreases as solute increases or as the bubble reaches stability zone. Also, velocity, drag coefficientand aspect ratio of bubble were discussed in detail by dimensionless analysis. Furthermore, three newshape numerical models (based on We, Ta, and WeEo, respectively) were proposed, which allowed for satisfactorypredictions, and new correlations represent well the experimental data in a wider range of Monumbers from the mentioned literature (11.6 logMo 0.63).

Understanding the Critical Inducers of International Contractors' Corruption

Min Luo,Xiaopeng Deng,Na Zhang 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.9

International contractors’ corruption severely threatens the transparency and sustainability of the construction industry. This study aims to identify critical inducers of international contractors’ corruption and explore their interrelationships. Leveraging the fraud diamond theory, the critical inducers were identified through the semi-systematic review, context analysis, and a two-round Delphi survey with 26 experts. Then, the cause-effect associations among the critical inducers were captured by integrating the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method and the interpretive structure modeling (ISM) method. Following this hybrid approach, the corruption inducer system incorporating 12 inducers and 32 conditions was proposed. Institutional pressure and inefficient compliance management were the most critical inducers in the system. Additionally, the interrelationships among these inducers were organized into a seven-level hierarchy pattern. Intricate rules and institutional pressure were the root causes of corruption. Inadequate formal sanctions were the key node in the causal chain. Neutralization techniques and execution skills were the immediate causes of corruption. This study develops the corruption inducer system by combining theory with practice in the international construction industry. It contributes to the sparse research on corruption by clarifying the cause-effect relationships among inducers from a holistic perspective. The findings would help industry practitioners, multinational company executives, and international aspirants understand corruption comprehensively and prioritize countermeasures.

Analyzing the Key Drivers of Contractors’ Temporary Competitive Advantage in the Competition of International High-Speed Rail Projects

        Qianwen Zhou,Xiaopeng Deng,Ruoyu Jin,Tengyuan Chang 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.11

After temporary competitive advantage (TCA) being proposed, this concept has received a lot of attention from academia and industry. For international high-speed rail (HSR) contractors, how to form their TCA and win out over the competition for new projects is crucial, while only a few studies focus on this issue. This research aims to develop a TCA system that reflects the characteristics of HSR contractors in the corporation and project levels. At first, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to explore and examine the key drivers and their relationships with contractors’ TCA. The results revealed that experience-mining advantage was the most critical factor of the six common factors. Next, common factors were divided into three dimensions and discussed in-depth, including resource-based TCA (i.e., technical resource and social image) which had the highest significance, followed by performance-based TCA (experience-mining advantage and risk-controlling performance), and action-based TCA (i.e., funding strategy and organizational management). Finally, two case study projects were selected to investigate the competitive situation between CRH (China Railway High-speed) and Shinkansen (Japan) in the international HSR market. This study not only provides suggestions for contractors to improve their TCA in international HSR projects, but also contributes to the theoretical framework for the TCA theory.

Research on Constitutive Models and Hot Workability of As-Homogenized Al- Zn-Mg-Cu Alloy During Isothermal Compression

        Dan Xiao,Xiaoyan Peng,Xiaopeng Liang,Ying Deng,Guofu Xu,Zhimin Yin 대한금속·재료학회 2017 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.23 No.3

Hot compression tests of as-homogenized Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy were performed at the deformation temperaturerange of 350-450 °C and the strain rate range of 0.001-1 s-1. The Arrhenius-type constitutive equation and theAvrami-type model were established to predict the flow behaviors of the alloy respectively. The processing map atthe true strain of 0.92 was developed to evaluate the workability of the alloy and the related microstructures wereinvestigated. The results show that the Avrami-type model has a higher accuracy to predict flow stress than theArrhenius-type constitutive equation. The stable deformation occurs under high temperature or low strain ratemainly owing to the dynamic recrystallization. Flow instability is prone to occur under the condition of low temperatureand high strain rate due to the initiation and the propagation of micro-cracks. According to the processingmap and corresponding microstructure characteristics, the optimum processing parameters are in the temperaturerange of 380-405 °C and the strain rate range of 0.006-0.035 s-1.

Determinants of Coopetition Relationships in International Joint Ventures for High-Speed Rail Projects

        Yanliang Niu,Huimin Li,Kunhui Ye,Amin Mahmoudi,Xiaopeng Deng 대한토목학회 2022 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.26 No.5

The mileage of high-speed rail (HSR) is expected to grow in the foreseeable future. Fierce international competition and HSR business uniqueness have facilitated the broad application of international joint ventures (IJVs) globally. However, the interaction between competition and cooperation complicates IJVs, and IJVs partners’ implementation has rarely been informed concerning the fluent operation of IJVs for HSR projects. This study aims to examine the determinants of IJVs coopetition for HSR projects. We identified 35 variables along with their clusters through literature review and pilot study, and collected data from the international HSR industry using a questionnaire survey. Eight clusters verified by the confirmatory factor analysis come from three levels: macro-level, project-level, and firm-level. Based on the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), a path model for the coopetition relationship has been established, demonstrating that macro-level and project-level determinants affect the coopetition relationship via the firm-level determinants. Furthermore, the path model indicates recommendations corresponding to various situations (isolating situation, partnering situation, contending situation, and adapting situation) for IJVs members to find a way to improve the coopetition relationship. Thus, this study not only contributes to the existing knowledge body on coopetition theory, but also enhances HSR contractors’ comprehension of the coopetition relationship determinants as well as the interactions.
