        L-arginine and N-carbamoylglutamic acid supplementation enhance young rabbit growth and immunity by regulating intestinal microbial community

        Objective: An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of L-arginine (L-Arg) and N-carbamoylglutamic acid (NCG) on the growth, metabolism, immunity and community of cecal bacterial flora of weanling and young rabbits. Methods: Eighteen normal-grade male weanling Japanese White rabbits (JWR) were selected and randomly divided into 6 groups with or without L-Arg and NCG supplementation. The whole feeding process was divided into weanling stage (day 37 to 65) and young stage (day 66 to 85). The effects of L-Arg and NCG on the growth, metabolism, immunity and development of the ileum and jejunum were compared via nutrient metabolism experiments and histological assessment. The different communities of cecal bacterial flora affected by L-Arg and NCG were assessed using high-throughput sequencing technology and bioinformatics analysis. Results: The addition of L-Arg and NCG enhanced the growth of weanling and young rabbit by increasing the nitrogen metabolism, protein efficiency ratio, and biological value, as well as feed intake and daily weight gain. Both L-Arg and NCG increased the concentration of immunoglobulin A (IgA), IgM, and IgG. NCG was superior to L-Arg in promoting intestinal villus development by increasing villus height, villus height/crypt depth index, and reducing the crypt depth. The effects of L-Arg and NCG on the cecal bacterial flora were mainly concentrated in different genera, including Parabacteroides, Roseburia, dgA-11_gut_group, Alistipes, Bacteroides, and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-005. These bacteria function mainly in amino acid transport and metabolism, energy production and conversion, lipid transport and metabolism, recombination and repair, cell cycle control, cell division, and cell motility. Conclusion: L-Arg and NCG can promote the growth and immunity of weanling and young JWR, as well as effecting the jejunum and ileum villi. L-Arg and NCG have different effects in the promotion of nutrient utilization, relieving inflammation and enhancing adaptability through regulating microbial community.

      • Zeolite-templated nanoporous carbon for high-performance supercapacitors

        <P>Hierarchical porous carbon prepared with calcium-containing nanocrystalline beta zeolite as the template and ethylene as the carbon source at a relatively low carbonization temperature (600 °C) displayed excellent electrocapacitive properties. The presence of both micro/mesopores and surface oxygen-containing groups on the ordered porous structure, along with a high specific surface area (2280 m<SUP>2</SUP> g<SUP>−1</SUP>) and pore volume (1.95 cm<SUP>3</SUP> g<SUP>−1</SUP>) coupled with good wettability towards the electrolyte enabled the carbon to perform well as a supercapacitor electrode. This carbon electrode achieved a specific capacitance of 250 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at a current density of 1 A g<SUP>−1</SUP> with 1 M H2SO4 as the aqueous electrolyte measured in a three-electrode system. A symmetric capacitor fabricated with the carbon as both electrodes exhibited a specific capacitance of 161 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at a current density of 1 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>, and an excellent cycling stability. After being cycled 17 000 times and shelved for another two months, the electrode exhibited a specific capacitance of 246 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 1 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>, 153% of the initial capacitance, and still maintained an excellent cycle stability. Besides, an all-solid-state supercapacitor cell fabricated with this carbon as both electrodes and polyvinyl alcohol/H2SO4 gel as the electrolyte displayed an areal specific capacitance of 413 mF cm<SUP>−2</SUP> at a current density of 0.25 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>.</P>

        A Novel Least Square and Image Rotation based Method for Solving the Inclination Problem of License Plate in Its Camera Captured Image

        Recognizing license plate from its traffic camera captured images is one of the most important aspects in many traffic management systems. Despite many sophisticated license plate recognition related algorithms available online, license plate recognition is still a hot research issue because license plates in each country all round the world lack of uniform format and their camera captured images are often affected by multiple adverse factors, such as low resolution, poor illumination effects, installation problem etc. A novel method is proposed in this paper to solve the inclination problem of license plates in their camera captured images through four parts: Firstly, special edge pixels of license plate are chosen to represent main information of license plates. Secondly, least square methods are used to compute the inclined angle of license plates. Then, coordinate rotation methods are used to rotate the license plate. At last, bilinear interpolation methods are used to improve the performance of license plate rotation. Several experimental results demonstrated that our proposed method can solve the inclination problem about license plate in visual aspect and can improve the recognition rate when used as the image preprocessing method.

        A fluorescent probe for colorimetric detection of bisulfite and application in sugar and red wine

        A new fluorescent probe made from (E)-2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(6-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl) acrylonitrile(Probe 1) was synthesized for the determination ofbisulfite concentrations in real food samples (red wine andsugar). Adding bisulfite to a Probe 1 solution caused amarked decrease in fluorescence intensity and a visualcolor change from yellow to light yellow. This distinctcolor response indicates that Probe 1 could be used as avisual sensor for bisulfite. Probe 1 can detect bisulfitequantitatively in the range 0–400 lM with a detection limitof 0.10 lM. This makes Probe 1 a convenient signalinginstrument for determining bisulfite levels in sugar and redwine samples.

        Gender and Political Participation : News Consumption, Political Efficacy and Interpersonal Communication

        With the backdrop of women’s political progress in recent decades, this study was designed to answer two related questions. First, is there a gender gap in political participation among young males and females with similar educational background and equal access to political news and information?  Second, how do factors such as news consumption, political efficacy, and political discussion interact with the relationship between gender and political participation? Through a survey of university students in Singapore, this study showed that females were less politically knowledgeable, less politically efficacious, and less likely to engage in political discussion and in offline and online political activities than males. Results further showed that females depended on political efficacy and discussion, whereas males were more likely to be motivated by political efficacy in their political participation. News consumption on the new and social media platforms also appeared to contribute to political participation for both males and females. Implications of this study were discussed. 近年来女性在政治方面取得了巨大进步,在此背景下,本研究着重考察如下两个问题:第一,在教育背景相似、获得政治新闻的机会均等的青年男女中是否仍存在着政治参与方面的性别差异?第二,新闻消费、政治效能感及政治讨论等多个因素是如何影响性别与政治参与的关系的?通过在新加坡一所大学的学生中进行的一次问卷调查,本研究发现与男性参与者相比,女性参与者具备较少的政治知识和政治效能感,她们也更少参与政治讨论及其他一些线上、线下的政治活动。研究结果进一步表明女性参与政治活动更多受她们的政治效能感和政治讨论的影响,而男性则主要依赖政治效能感。另外,新媒体尤其是社交媒体上的新闻消费同时影响男性和女性的政治参与。最后,我们对本研究的意义进行了深入探讨。

        Comparative Evaluation of the Antioxidant Effects of the Natural Vitamin C Analog 2-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic Acid Isolated from Goji Berry Fruit

        2-O-β-D-Glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid (AA-2βG) is a natural derivative of vitamin C (Lascorbic acid, AA) isolated from Goji berry (Lycium barbarum L.) fruit. We evaluated the antioxidant activities of AA-2βG and AA using in vitro and in vivo model systems. In vitro radical scavenging assays demonstrated that AA-2βG was capable of scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl and hydroxyl peroxide and inhibiting H2O2-induced hemolysis better than AA. AA-2βG and AA had similar hydroxyl radical scavenging capabilities, but AA-2βG was incapable of scavenging superoxide anion radicals, and its capacity to scavenge nitrite (NO_2^−) was lower than that of AA. The overall in vitro reduction capability of AA-2βG was also significantly lower than that of AA. Moreover, in vivo studies demonstrated that AA-2βG was capable of protecting the liver against carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver injury in mice. These results suggest that AA-2βG is an important antioxidant component of Goji berry fruit, which may share similar but distinct antioxidant mechanistic properties with AA. This study furthers our understanding of the mechanisms of Goji berry fruit pharmacological activities on antiaging and antitumor properties as a traditional medicine and dietary supplement.

        US Propaganda to the Muslim World

        This study explored the impact of Shared Values, a set of four videos produced by the United States to improve its image in the eyes of Muslims after the September 11 attacks on the Untied States. Through an experiment conducted in Malaysia, one of the target areas of the videos, the authors tested if the viewers would be influenced by the major themes of the videos and see the United States as a land of opportunities, freedom of religion and respect for Muslims. The results of the experiment show that the Shared Values videos are unlikely to achieve their designed purpose. Despite the fact that the videos featured Muslims to speak for the United States, they may not easily convince their Muslim viewers of the messages they were designed to deliver. Participants in the experiment who watched the Shared Values videos did not acquire a better perception of the United States and the Americans compared with viewers in the control groups who watched videos not designed for such purposes.

        Effects of Government Regulations on Spam

        The advent of 3G networks provides marketing agencies and advertisers with expanded opportunities to explore the mobile phone as a viable advertising medium. However, because mobile advertising is already used indiscriminately, SMS ads are likened to spam on mobile phones. Using survey data collected from 407 mobile phone users in a well-regulated mobile advertising market, Singapore, this study examines consumer responses to mobile phone ads. The results show that even though respondents disliked mobile ads delivered to mobile phone screens, they may not inevitably avoid the ads. Perceived goal impediment, past negative experience and privacy concerns would cause them to avoid mobile phone advertising. Interestingly, perceived irritation was not a significant predictor of mobile ad avoidance in multivariate analyses, suggesting that in a well-regulated telecommunications market like Singapore, mobile phone ads do not necessarily reach a stage of excessiveness and cause massive consumer avoidance as seen in other Asian countries.
