        Butyltin Compounds Concentrations in Masan Bay

        The occurrence of butyltin compounds in the seawater and sediment of Masan Bay was investigated. The concentrations were in the range of ND-0.059㎍/ℓ for tributyltin(TBT), ND-0.091㎍/ℓ for dibutyltin(DBT) and ND-0.720㎍/ℓ for monobutyltin(MBT) in the seawater, and ND-0.233㎍ TBT/g.dry, ND-0.197㎍ DBT/g.dry and ND-0.684㎍ MBT/g.dry in the sediment. Among the butyltin compounds, the major component in the seawater was MBT, while the predominant species in the sediment changed with time. The tributyltin concentrations in the sediment are approximately three orders of magnitude greater than the associated water column levels. Sediment/water partition coefficients(K) of TBT were between 0.6×10³ and 5.0×10³.

        Evaluation of image quality for stent image with different dilution ratio of contrast agent in self-production vessel model on angiographic X-ray computed tomography (CT)

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Nowadays, the interest and the number of examination of cerebral angiography and interventional procedure have been significantly increasing. In stent procedure on patients, the important point is to check especially whether the position of stent is complete. Also, the dilution ratio of contrast agent and normal saline (N/S) causes affect the quality of image. Thus, the purpose of this study was to find optimized dilution ratio of contrast agent for acquiring the high quality image with various diameters of self-production vessel model in AAPM head phantom. To evaluate the quality of image, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were used as a factor of quantitative measurement, and Likert scale was used as a factor of qualitative measurement. According to the results, we can acquire excellent result for 1:4 (contrast agent: N/S), 1:5, and 1:5 dilution ratios using 2, 3, and 5mm vessel diameters, respectively. In addition, quantitative measurement and qualitative measurement came up with same tendency. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that the 1:4 and 1:5 dilution ratio of contrast agent had outstanding results in 2, 3, and 5mm diameters of vessel model in phantom.</P>

      • Novel Antioxidant Tripeptide “ACQ” Can Prevent UV-Induced Cell Death and Preserve the Number of Epidermal Stem Cells

        <P>We found that tripeptide “ACQ: alanine-cysteine-glutamine” has significant DPPH scavenging activity compared to that of glutathione. Antioxidant effects of ACQ were tested in <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I> models. When treated with H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>, mock treated fibroblasts and keratinocytes showed strong staining by H<SUB>2</SUB>DCFA. But, ACQ showed good protective effects against hydrogen peroxide treatment. When mice were fed for 2 or 4 weeks, similar protective effects were observed. In the control group, epidermis was severely damaged by UV irradiation and apoptotic keratinocytes were observed. There were also numerous TUNEL positive cells. But in the ACQ group, epidermis became thicker and there was no sign of severe damage. Interestingly, the number of p63 cells was also higher in ACQ fed mice. To confirm the stem cell rescuing effects of ACQ, three-dimensional skin samples were constructed. Results showed that ACQ increased the expression of integrin <I>α</I>6 and the number of p63 positive cells. These findings showed that ACQ has good antioxidant activity and may increase stem cell activities by the regulation of integrin <I>α</I>6.</P>

        Case Report : Hepatic Failure Caused by Reactivation of YMDD Mutants Occurring during Preemptive Lamivudine Therapy

        Reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication is a frequent phenomenon in patients receiving immunosuppressants or chemotherapy. It was recently reported that regional therapy, such as transarterial chemotherapy (TAC) or radiotherapy, can also induce HBV reactivation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and this can be prevented by preemptive lamivudine treatment. We report an unusual case of fatal hepatitis caused by reactivation of the tyrosine-methionine-aspartate-aspartate (YMDD) lamivudine-resistant strain in a 51-year-old male patient with HCC who was receiving preemptive lamivudine therapy. This patient received combined helical tomotherapy and TAC for the treatment of HCC with pulmonary metastasis. HBV reactivation and hepatitis exacerbation occurred after 2 months of therapy, but preemptive antiviral therapy was continued. Laboratory tests showed that the serum HBV DNA level had increased by more than 10,000-fold and a severe elevation of the aminotransferase level to 1,060 U/L. Although adefovir was added to lamivudine immediately after detecting the YMDD mutants, the patient eventually died of hepatic failure. Our experience suggests that for preemptive therapy, the use of potent antiviral drugs with a low risk of drug resistance as well as close viral monitoring are important for chronic HBV carriers undergoing intensive anticancer therapy.         Synthesis and Properties of Hexyl End-Capped Thiophene Oligomers Containing Anthracene Moiety in the Center

        A series of new organic semiconductors hexyl end-capped thiophene-anthracene oligomers containing the anthracene moiety in the center of the oligomers are synthesized. The target oligomers have been obtained by Stille coupling reactions as key step reactions. The synthesized thiophene-anthracene oligomers were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and high-resolution mass spectroscopy, respectively. All of the oligomers are soluble in chlorinated solvents. Their optical, thermal and electrochemical properties were measured. The hexyl end-capped oligomers and their unsubstituted oligomers exhibit the same absorption behavior in dilute toluene solution. Hexyl end-capped bis-terthienylanthracene oligomer is observed to show liquid crystalline mesophase at 166 oC in heating process. The thermal analyses as well as the electrochemical measurement data indicate that the designed materials show better thermal and oxidation stability than the corresponding oligothiophenes without anthracene core. Fluorescence lifetimes and fluorescence quantum yields of the thiophene-anthracene oligomers are measured to be 10-14 ps and 3.4-9.9 × 10?3 which are much shorter and lower than those of oligothiophenes respectively.

        The Effect of Cucumber mosaic virus 2b Protein to Transient Expression and Transgene Silencing Mediated by Agro-infiltration

        The transient and rapid expression system of a foreign protein in planta is a very useful technique in biotechnology application. We have investigated optimum condition of Agrobacterium-infiltration technique in which expression level of foreign proteins were maximized without detrimental effects on plants using GFP and Cucumber mosaic virus 2b protein, which is known as an enhancer of gene expression and a suppressor of post-transcriptional gene silencing(PTGS). The optimum expression level of both RNA and protein of GFP with minimum leaf impairment was obtained at $OD_{600}$=0.2 of Agrobactrium inocula. The steady-state levels of GFP RNA and protein generally peaked at 3 and 7 days post-infiltration(dpi), respectively. In the presence of 2b, both the magnitude and duration of GFP expression was highly increased and we could detect GFP level until 17 dpi. On the other hands, the 2b-mediated higher accumulation of foreign proteins resulted in the repression of normal leaf growth, possibly due to the limitation of supply of energy or materials required for growth maintenance. Using this Agrobacterium-infiltration system with 2b and GFP, we tested a hypothesis for the threshold model of PTGS initiation. Four GFP transgenic lines of N. benthamiana, which shows different expression level of GFP were tested to determine the threshold level for PTGS initiation. Agrobacterium-infiltration of GFP into those GFP-transgenic plants resulted in the co-silencing of the transgenic GFP. It was found that very low concentration of Agrobacterium with GFP and GFP+2b($OD_{600}$=0.002-0.02) which could not phenotypically induce an additive GFP expression, was enough to trigger PTGS pathway in all GFP transgenic plants. This strongly indicates that each GFP-transgenic plant should be expressing the transgenic GFP at its own pre-determined level and there was no buffer zone of additive GFP-expression to the threshold. In other words, the PTGS seems to be immediately activated as a self-defensive mechanism if an internal balance of gene expression is broken.

        Oriental × Trumpet Interspecific Hybrid Lily Cultivar with Double Color, ‘ Morning Bell ’

        ‘Morning Bell’ 품종은 생육이 왕성하고 엽소 및 잎마름병에 강하며 꽃이 큰 백합 신품종을 육성하기 위하여 2008년 충남 농업기술원 태안백합시험장에서 교배한 OT(Oriental hybrid× Trumpet hybrid)계통의 종간교잡종이다. 모본으로는 복색(백 색+분홍색)의 OT계통 ‘Altari’ 품종을, 부본으로는 분홍색의 Oriental계통 ‘Solaia’ 품종을 화주절단수분법에 의해 교배한 후 2009년부터 2012년까지 기내 종자배양 및 증식 육묘하여 2013년 우수계통(OT13-9)을 1차 선발하였다. 2013년부터 2015년도에 걸쳐 ‘Candy Club’ 품종을 대조구로 하여 보통재배를 통한 특성검정을 실시하였으며, 2014년 화훼연구소에서 개최 한 신품종 평가회에서 기호성이 우수한 개체를 2차 선발하여 ‘Chungnam OT-3’로 명명한 후 농촌진흥청 농작물직무육성 신품종선정위원회 심의를 거쳐 국립종자원에 ‘Morning Bell’로 품종보호 출원하였다.‘Morning Bell’ 품종의 중부지역 자연 개화는 7월 2일로 ‘Candy Club’ 품종과 비슷하였고 초장은 120.8cm이었다. 진분홍색 반점에 복색(크림색+적색)의 화색과 상향개화성이었다. 잎마름병과 진딧물 등의 병충해 방제를 주기적으로 실시하고, 양수분 관리 등 일반적인 재배관리를 통해 고품질 절화 및 구근생산이 가능하다. A new Oriental × Trumpet (OT) intersectional hybrid lily cultivar (‘Morning Bell’) with flourishing growth and high resistance to leaf burn and Botrytis infection was developed at the Taean Lily Experiment Station of Chungcheongnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 2015. In 2008, the yellow-flowered female parent, Lilium OT hybrid ‘Altari’ was c rossed with t he p ink-flowered male parent L. Oriental hybrid ‘Solaia’ using a cut-style pollination method. Adaptation trials were conducted on the candidate line to develop various characteristics through in vitro seed culture, multiplication, and seedling from 2009 to 2012. The first selection was made in 2013, and the line was tentatively named ‘OT13-9’. In this study, the external shape type, bulb production, growth, and flowering characteristics of ‘OT13-9’ were compared with those of ‘Candy Club’ from 2013 to 2015. Consumer preference for the evaluated characteristics was surveyed during a lily flower show held at the Flower Research Institute in 2014, and a second selection, named ‘Chungnam OT-3’, was made according to results from the show. This line was registered as the OT intersectional hybrid lily cultivar ‘Morning Bell’ in 2015. The natural flowering time of ‘Morning Bell’ began on July 2, which was similar to that of ‘Candy Club’ at the central district. The plant height of ‘Morning Bell’ was 120.8 cm, and flowers were of the following three types: double color (white-pink), dark with pink spots, or upward blooming. Production of high quality cut flowers and bulbs required careful use of general cultivation techniques, including control of diseases and insects and nutrient/moisture management.
