The Hyperactivity of Efferent Auditory System in Patients with Schizophrenia: A Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions Study

        Noor Alaudin Abdul Wahab,Suzaily Wahab,Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman,Dinsuhaimi Sidek,Mohd. Normani Zakaria 대한신경정신의학회 2016 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.13 No.1

ObjectiveaaElectrophysiological studies, which are mostly focused on afferent pathway, have proven that auditory processing deficits exist in patients with schizophrenia. Nevertheless, reports on the suppressive effect of efferent auditory pathway on cochlear outer hair cells among schizophrenia patients are limited. The present, case-control, study examined the contralateral suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) in patients with schizophrenia. MethodsaaParticipants were twenty-three healthy controls and sixteen schizophrenia patients with normal hearing, middle ear and cochlear outer hair cells function. Absolute non-linear and linear TEOAEs were measured in both ears by delivering clicks stimuli at 80 dB SPL and 60 dB SPL respectively. Subsequently, contralateral suppression was determined by subtracting the absolute TEOAEs response obtained at 60 dBpe SPL during the absence and presence of contralateral white noise delivered at 65 dB HL. No attention tasks were conducted during measurements. ResultsaaWe found no significant difference in absolute TEOAEs responses at 80 dB SPL, in either diagnosis or ear groups (p>0.05). However, the overall contralateral suppression was significantly larger in schizophrenia patients (p<0.05). Specifically, patients with schizophrenia demonstrated significantly increased right ear contralateral suppression compared to healthy control (p<0.05). ConclusionaaThe present findings suggest increased inhibitory effect of efferent auditory pathway especially on the right cochlear outer hair cells. Further studies to investigate increased suppressive effects are crucial to expand the current understanding of auditory hallucination mechanisms in schizophrenia patients.

Listening to Sentences in Noise: Revealing Binaural Hearing Challenges in Patients with Schizophrenia

        Noor Alaudin Abdul Wahab,Mohd. Normani Zakaria,Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman,Dinsuhaimi Sidek,Suzaily Wahab 대한신경정신의학회 2017 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.14 No.6

Objective: The present, case-control, study investigates binaural hearing performance in schizophrenia patients towards sentences presented in quiet and noise. Methods: Participants were twenty-one healthy controls and sixteen schizophrenia patients with normal peripheral auditory functions. The binaural hearing was examined in four listening conditions by using the Malay version of hearing in noise test. The syntactically and semantically correct sentences were presented via headphones to the randomly selected subjects. In each condition, the adaptively obtained reception thresholds for speech (RTS) were used to determine RTS noise composite and spatial release from masking. Results: Schizophrenia patients demonstrated significantly higher mean RTS value relative to healthy controls (p=0.018). The large effect size found in three listening conditions, i.e., in quiet (d=1.07), noise right (d=0.88) and noise composite (d=0.90) indicates statistically significant difference between the groups. However, noise front and noise left conditions show medium (d=0.61) and small (d=0.50) effect size respectively. No statistical difference between groups was noted in regards to spatial release from masking on right (p=0.305) and left (p=0.970) ear. Conclusion: The present findings suggest an abnormal unilateral auditory processing in central auditory pathway in schizophrenia patients. Future studies to explore the role of binaural and spatial auditory processing were recommended.

Screening thirty soybean genotypes under solid and intercropping plantings in Egypt

        Abd El-Alim A. Metwally,Sayed A. Safina,Eman I. Abdel-Wahab,Sherif I. Abdel-Wahab,Tamer I. Abdel-Wahab 한국작물학회 2021 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.24 No.2

Cropping systems are relatively more important for testing soybean genotypes under Egyptian conditions. A field experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Experiments and Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt, during the 2016 and 2017 seasons to evaluate the productivity of thirty soybean genotypes collected from four countries in intercropping with corn. Intercropping two soybean ridges alternating with another two of corn (2:2) was used in a split plot distributed in randomized complete block design. Intercropping and solid systems were randomly assigned to the main plots, and the soybean genotypes were allocated in sub-plots. All over the genotypes, intercropping caused significant increases in maturity date, root length, and plant height; meanwhile, the reverse was true for each of total leaf chlorophyll content, numbers of branches and pods, as well as seed yield per plant. Soybean genotypes Giza 111, C1, Woodworth, C34, Hill, Hutcheson, and Holladay gave higher seed yield than the others. Allover cropping systems, soybean genotypes Giza 111, Woodworth, Hutcheson, and C1 had higher seed yield than the others under intercropping. A significant positive correlation was detected between pod number and seed yield under cropping systems. Early maturing genotypes under intercropping were correlated positively with a higher yield of plants, as well as relative values. Determinate soybean variety Woodworth was matured under intercropping and solid planting at the same time. Soybean genotypes Woodworth, C1, C34, Giza 35, Giza 82, and Giza 111 were tolerant than the others to intercropping. The six soybean genotypes off er useful genetic materials for soybean breeding programs to improve yield under intercropping.

The Trickle-Down Effect of Intellectual Capital on Banks' Macro Performance in Indonesia

WAHAB, Abdul,ABBAS, Nurhasnah,SYARIATI, Alim,SYARIATI, Namla Elfa Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.12

The stock market serves as a representation of economic well-being in a country. Along with the myriad of economic predictors, specific knowledge possession may lead to different macro consequences of stock performance and market value. This study empirically investigates the capacity of possessing excellent intellectual capital to increase the performance and values of listed banks in Indonesia. The selection of banks as the primary data represents such sectors' capability to attract, employ, or exploit the excellent internal capacity under the discussion of resource-based view theory. At best to the authors' knowledge, this topic's findings are still elusive and debatable upon considering the direct and indirect relationships between the proposed exogenous and endogenous variables. Eighteen listed banks form the panel data throughout 2011-2016. This study employs a path analysis and Sobel test to obtain the results of the proposed hypothesis. The results report some positive relationships of the intellectual capital to firms' performances and values, directly and indirectly, with a substantial effect on the second model compared to the first model. This study highlighted knowledge's capacity as a vital basis to gauge the banks' performance and valuation. However, a better formulation of intellectual capital is required to capture a better measurement.

Volumetric Behaviour of Binary Liquid Mixtures at a Temperature of 303.15 K

Wahab, Mohammad A.,Ali, M. Azhar,Mottaleb, Mohammad A. Korean Chemical Society 2002 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.23 No.7

Excess molar volumes (Vm E ) of binary liquid mixtures: xC6H5CH3 + (1-x1)CH3CN or + (1-x1)C6H5NO2, or + (1-x1)C2H5NO2 have been determined as a function of mole fraction of C6H5CH3 (x) at a temperature of 303.15 K over a entire range of composition. The densities of the binary liquid mixtures were determined by pycnometrically. The VmE values of the mixtures have been found to be negative over the whole composition in order of C6H5CH3 + C6H5NO2, < C6H5CH3 + CH3CN, and < C6H5CH3 + C2H5NO2. The negative magnitude of VmE suggests the presence of intermolecular interaction in the three binary liquid mixtures.

      • Fabrication, growth mechanism and antibacterial activity of ZnO micro-spheres prepared via solution process

        Wahab, R.,Mishra, A.,Yun, S.I.,Hwang, I.H.,Mussarat, J.,Al-Khedhairy, A.A.,Kim, Y.S.,Shin, H.S. Pergamon ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2012 Biomass & bioenergy Vol.39 No.-

This paper presents the high antibacterial activity of ZnO micro-spheres prepared via solution process using zinc nitrate hexahydrate, (+) l-cysteine, HMT and sodium hydroxide against four pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The antibacterial activity of ZnO micro-spheres was studied via nutrient broth medium at different concentrations (5μg/ml-45μg/ml) of ZnO micro-spheres. Our investigation reveals that the lowest concentration of micro-spheres solution inhibits the growth of microbial strain, which was found to be 5μg/ml for S. aureus, S. typhimurium and K. pneumoniae whereas for E. coli, it was calculated to be 15μg/ml. The diameter of each micro-sphere lie between 2 and 3μm as observed from FESEM and Transmission electron microscopy. The composition of synthesized material was analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy and it shows the band of ZnO at 462cm-1. Additionally, on the basis of morphological and chemical observations the growth mechanism of ZnO micro-spheres was also proposed.

      • Mechanical Properties and Water Absorption of Rice Starch-Filled Linear Low Density Polyethylene

Wahab, Mohammad A.,Mottaleb, Mohammad A. The Polymer Society of Korea 2001 Korea polymer journal Vol.9 No.6

Rice starch was incorporated into linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) using a Brabender Plastic-Corder internal mixer at a temperature of 140$\^{C}$ and 40 rpm. The starch loading was varied from 0 to 30% with 5 intervals. Studies on brabender torque development, mechanical properties and water absorption were investigated. The starch loading did not influence the brabender torque significantly. With respect to mechanical properties; the tensile strength and elongation at break decrease with increasing starch loading. The Young's modulus also increases with the starch filling. Mechanical properties were deteriorated as the starch absorbed moisture. The rate of water absorption was dependent on the starch filling in the composites. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was performed for the tensile fracture surfaces and it revealed the starch agglomeration and a poor dispersion of starch in the LLDPE matrix.

Design of a 170 GHz Notch Filter for the KSTAR ECE Imaging Sensor Application

( Wahab Mohyuddin ),( Dong Sik Woo ),( Sung Kyun Kim ),( Kang Wook Kim ),( Hyun Chul Choi ) 한국센서학회 2016 센서학회지 Vol.25 No.1

A planar, light-weight, and low-cost notch filter structure is required for the KSTAR ECEI (Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging) system to protect the mixer arrays from spurious plasma heating power. Without protection, this heating power can significantly degrade or damage the performance of the mixer array. To protect mixer arrays, a frequency selective surface (FSS) structure is the suitable choice as a notch filter to reject the spurious heating power. The FSS notch filter should be located between the lenses of the ECEI system. This paper presents a 170 GHz FSS notch filter for the KSTAR ECEI sensor application. The design of such an FSS notch filter is based on the single-sided square loop geometry, because that makes it relatively insensitive to the incident angle of incoming wave. The FSS notch filter exhibits high notch rejection with low pass-band insertion loss over a wide range of incident angles. This paper also reviews the simulated and measured results. The proposed FSS notch filter might be implemented in other millimeter-wave plasma devices.

Fabrication, characterization and growth mechanism of heterostructured zinc oxide nanostructures via solution method

        Wahab, R.,Kim, Y.S.,Shin, H.S. Elsevier 2011 Current Applied Physics Vol.11 No.3

Differently shaped zinc oxide nanostructures were synthesized at @?90 oC by refluxing process at different refluxing times (6, 12, 18 and 24 h) via the solution method using zinc acetate dihydrate as a source material and hydrazine hydrate. Heterostructures like needle shaped nanorods, flowers composed with nanorods, pencil like zinc oxide nanorods and square shaped zinc oxide micro-particles were observed using field emission electron microscopy (FE-SEM) as functions of varying refluxing time of the solution of zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(Ac)2 2H2O) and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4 H2O). A high-resolution transmission electron microscopic (HR-TEM) observation supports FE-SEM observations and revealed that nanostructures grew along [0001] direction with an ideal lattice fringe distance of 0.52 nm, same as that of bulk ZnO. X-ray diffraction patterns present good crystalline properties and that the obtained powder is zinc oxide without any other impurities. The compositional study, FTIR spectroscopic measurement showed a standard peak of zinc oxide at 518 cm-1. In addition to this, we also proposed the chemical growth mechanism of different types of grown zinc oxide nanostructures.

      • Optical Analysis of Zinc Oxide Quantum Dots with Bovine Serum Albumin and Bovine Hemoglobin

        Wahab, R.,Dwivedi, S.,Khan, M. S.,Al-Senaidy, A. M.,Shin, H. S.,Musarrat, J.,Al-Khedhairy, A. A. Springer Science + Business Media 2014 Journal of pharmaceutical innovation Vol.9 No.1

Quantum dots (QDs) are widely used in medical, industrial, and household applications owing to their excellent biological property. For its wide medical application, the biocompatibility of QDs is an important aspect of research. The aim of the present study was to synthesize zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnO-QDs) and to investigate the interaction with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine hemoglobin (BHb) using fluorescence quenching method and circular dichroism (CD). The study suggests that the electrostatic force of attraction favors the adsorption of BSA onto ZnO-QDs. The fluorescence quenching of BSA and BHb using QD indicates the formation of QDs-BSA complexes. The CD spectra also showed the changes in secondary structure of proteins by interacting with QDs.
