The science teachers' perceptions and the status of formative assessment in science teaching were identified through a questionnaire. The majority of teachers thought that the most important goal of assessment in education was to identify to what extent pupils achieved learning objectives. They suggested that formative assessment was the most appropriate method regardless of the purposes of assessment. They thought that formative assessment was an assessment carried out at the end of lesson to identify to what extent pupils achieved learning objectives. The teachers stressed the need for formative assessment to identify what pupils achieved. But they carried out formative assessment about once a week and there were very few teachers carrying out formative assessment during the lesson. They responded that it was difficult to carry out formative assessment because of large class size, lack of time and difficulty in preparation. And they used the information from formative assessment to judge the level of attainment.

We conducted a study to access the effectiveness of glove and washing hands for the prevention of microbial contamination during the dental clinical practice. Microbial numbers at unwashed hands and gloves were 9.938×103 (CFU)/ml, those at washed with soap were 9.44×103 CFU/ml And those at washed with a typical liquid soap including disinfectant, Dettol (Reckitt Benckiser, Slough, SL1 3UH, UK) were 6.58×102 CFU/ml. In case of unwashed hand and hand washing with soap had similar microbial numbers and in case of hand washing with Dettol showed a rapid decrease of microbial number. Hand washing with Dettol was effective to prevent microbial contamination than hand washing with soap. Also microbial numbers in all case wearing gloves decreased. It showed effectiveness of gloves for prevention of microbial contamination. In addition to microbial numbers showed a tendency to increase from 3 hours on wearing gloves, the change of new gloves after 3 hours on wearing is necessary to minimize the danger of microbial contamination.

<P>Interleukin-1 (IL-1), a cytokine produced predominantly by cells from the macrophage lineage, can affect multiple neuroendocrine and metabolic functions. IL-1α production by cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells from an obese group was significantly elevated in comparison to a control group. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the IL-1α polymorphism and Sasang constitution, a major branch in Korean traditional medicine, were related to obesity. Genotyping was done in 182 healthy females with a marked variation in body mass index (BMI) by a PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. The T allele was associated with decreased BMI (p = 0.020). In a subgroup with BMI values ranging from 27 ~ 29 kg/m2, the frequency of the T allele was significantly decreased (p = 0.004, odds ratio, OR = 0.141 compared to a subgroup with a BMI values less than 25 Kg/m2). In addition, in Taeumin female subjects, the frequency of the IL-1α T allele was markedly decreased in a subgroup with BMI values in the range of 27 ~ 29 kg/m2compared to a lean group with BMI values less than 25 kg/m2(p = 0.004, OR = 0.139). In Korean women, an association was found between -889C/T polymorphism in the regulatory region of the IL-1α gene and BMI values. In addition, an association was found among IL-1α polymorphism, obesity, and the Sasang constitution.</P>

Scutellaria baicalensis is one of the most widely used herbal medicines in East Asia.Because baicalein and baicalin are major components of this herb,it is important to under stand the effects of these compounds on drug metabolizing enzymes, such ascytochrome P450(CYP),for evaluating herb-drug interaction. The effects pf baocalin and baicalein on activities of ethoxyresoru- fin O-deethylase(EROD),methoxyresorufin O-demethylase(MROD),benzuloxyresorufin O-demethylase(BROD),p-nitrophenol hydroxulase and erythormycin N-demethylase were assessed in rat liver microsomes in the present study. In addition, the phar- macokinetics of caffeine and its three metabolites (i.e.,paraxanthine,theobromine and theophylline)in baicalin-treated rets were compared with untreated control. As results, EROD,MROD and MROD and BROD activities were inhibiteb by both baicalin and baicalein However, there were no significant differences in the pharmackkinetic parameters of oral caffeine and its three metablites be-tween control and baicalin-treated rats. When the plasma concantration of baicalin was determined, the maximum concentration of baicalin was below the estimated IC values observed in vitro. In conclusion, baicalin had no effects on the pharmacokinetics of caffeine and its metabolites in vivo, following single oral administration in rats.

<P>Wireless regional area network (WRAN) is intended to offer the fixed wireless access services using cognitive radio technology in the TV white space. Therefore, WRAN shall minimize the transmission power so that harmful interference is not imposed on the licensed users operating in the TV bands. In this paper, we propose a processing block that offers improvements in the SNR and diversity gain using the block to algebraically process two constellation symbols. Thus, the transmission power can be reduced by an amount equal to the gains. The simulation result shows that the proposed scheme has a better bit error performance than the transmission scheme defined in the IEEE 802.22 draft standard.</P>

Aims: Liver cirrhosis is a soil for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and prevention of HCC is urgent. However, biomarkers to predict development of HCC from liver cirrhosis are still lacking. We aimed to discover a biomarker directly from protein analysis and relate it with genomics to validate in a larger cohort. Methods: Forty six patients who had surgical resection for HCC that developed from cirrhotic liver and developed HCC recurrence 3 years after resection were enrolled. HCC that recur less than 3 years was considered as intrahepatic metastasis while those that recur 3 years later was defined as de novo recurrence from liver cirrhosis. Systematic analysis was performed using reverse-phase protein array (RPPA) and microarray data acquired from these patients. Results: Proteomics analysis performed after selecting 20 proteins from 201 proteins with AUROC >70 in predicting late recurrence were able to categorize patients into high (n=20) and low risk (n=26) HCC groups. Caveolin-1 was the dominant protein for this categorization and 298 genes that significantly differed between these 2 groups were derived. This proteome derived late recurrence (PDLC) gene signature well predicted the development of HCC in cohort 1 (n=216) with background of liver cirrhosis. The robustness of this signature was also validated in predicting de novo HCC recurrence in cohort 2 (n=259). PDLC gene signature remained significant in multivariate analysis when compared with clinical variables (HR 1.904, P=0.01) and showed the lowest AIC among previously reported gene signature (186-BROAD gene signature and hepatic injury and regeneration gene signature). in vitro experiment revealed that immortalized liver cell overexpressed with CAV1 showed significantly increased proliferation and soft agar colony formation than the control (P<0.001 and 0.033). Immunohistochemical staining of tissue microarray analysis also supported our findings with increased HCC development in CAV1 positive tissues (P=0.047). Conclusions: Expression of CAV1, a structural protein of caveolae in the plasma membrane appears to be an important predictor of HCC development from liver cirrhosis and our study has provided new insight in considering CAV1 as a biomarker and target for prevention strategy.
