      • AN APPROACH FOR LOGIC SYNTHESIS

        This paper presents a rule-based and algorithmic approach for logic synthesis, where not only tables for transformation are described as rules, but also a two level logic minimization algorithm is regarded as one of the rules. A rule interpreter fires these rules. It uses a branch and bound technique to reduce the cpu-time. Physical constraints such as longest path lengths between registers, fanin/out and polarity are checked whenever each rule is applied. The system based on the approach has been implemented in the C language on a EWS4800 workstation and has designed many circuits in production divisions. It has been shown that the system generates solutions very close to the manual implementation.

      • Performance Enhancement of TFI-OFDM with Path Selection based Channel Identification

        Recently time-frequency interferometry (TFI)-OFDM has been proposed as a channel identification scheme. TFI-OFDM system can multiplex the same impulse response in twice on the time domain without overlapping to each other. In this case, the required pilot signal is only one. Moreover, by averaging of these impulse responses, the accurated channel impulse responses are obtained. However, if the total channel paths are reduced, the performance might be degraded. This is because the channel identification of TFI-OFDM is operated with averaging the selected spectrum signals from the time windows. For the case with reduced channel paths, the selected time spectrum signals include the noise terms. By applying the FFT operation, these noise terms are spread in the frequency domain. In this case, the channel identification is poorly operated due to the noise. To reduce this problem, in the paper, we propose the channel identification method with path selection for performance enhancement of TFI-OFDM.

        In-line Automatic Defect Repair System for TFT-LCD Production

        An automated circuit repair system was developed for enhancing the yield of nondefective liquid crystal panels, focusing on the resist patterns on the circuit material layer of thin-film transistor (TFT) substrates prior to etching. The developed system has an advantage over the parallel conventional system: In the former, the repair conditions depend on the type of resist whereas in the latter, the repair parameters must be fine-tuned for each circuit material. The developed system consists of a resist pattern defect inspection system and a pattern repair system for short and open defects. The repair system performs fine corrections of abnormal areas of the resist pattern. The open-repair system is equipped with a syringe to dispense resist. To maintain a stable resist diameter, a thermal insulator was installed in the syringe system. As a result, the diameter of the dispensed resist became much more stable than when no thermal insulator was used. The resist diameter was kept within the target of 400±100 µm. Furthermore, a prototype system was constructed, and using a dummy pattern, it was confirmed that the system worked automatically and correctly.

        Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and common bile duct exploration for gallstone and common bile duct stone in a patient with a left-sided gallbladder: a case report

        Left-sided gallbladder is a rare finding that is mostly discovered incidentally during surgery and is often associated with anatomic anomalies. We herein report a case in which laparoscopic cholecystectomy and common bile duct exploration were achieved for an 89-year-old female patient with left-sided gallbladder. Surgery was carried out using our usual trocar position. Calot triangle was covered by the body of the gallbladder and could not be detected. We dissected the gallbladder from the fundus towards the neck. The cystic duct joined the common bile duct from the right side, and common bile duct exploration was performed routinely without perioperative comorbidities. Although the preoperative diagnosis rate is low and the risk of intraoperative bile duct injuries in patients with left-sided gallbladder is high, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and common bile duct exploration can be safely performed by understanding the location and bifurcation of the cystic duct.

        Direct Piezoelectricity of PZT Films and Application to Vibration Energy Harvesting

        Direct piezoelectric effect of ferroelectric thin films was investigated to discuss the application of ferroelectric films to vibration energy harvesting. From the model of the piezoelectric vibration energy harvester, it was found that the figure of merit (FOM) is proportional to the square of the effective transverse piezoelectric coefficient e_(31,f). The e_(31,f) coefficient of Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3 films were measured by substrate bending method. The e_(31,f) coefficient of the 1-μm and 3-μm -thick PZT films are -6.1 C/m^2 and -9.1 C/m^2 at a compressive strain of 6 × 10^(-5), respectively Furthermore, it was found that the e_(31,f) coefficient increases with increasing the strain, which is favorable for the vibration energy harvesting.

        Safety and efficacy in actual clinical practice of once-weekly subcutaneous teriparatide for osteoporosis patients with a high fracture risk

        Objectives: To reassess the safety and efficacy of once-weekly teriparatide 56.5 mg in osteoporosis patients with a high fracture risk. Methods: This postmarketing observational study was conducted at 72 weeks according to the package insert. Of the 3573 Japanese osteoporosis patients in the safety analysis set, 91.80% were women, the mean age was 78.1 years, and 69.89% had a history of prevalent fragility fractures, indicating that a high proportion of patients at high risk of fracture were enrolled. Results: Persistence with weekly teriparatide treatment was 59.36%, and 38.95% at 24 and 72 weeks, respectively. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were reported in 898 patients (25.13%), and serious ADRs were reported in 26 patients (0.73%). The most frequent ADRs were nausea, vomiting, and headache. The cumulative incidence of new vertebral fractures 72 weeks after the start of treatment was 3.31%. Increases in the bone mineral density were observed in the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and proximal femur. The serum levels of the bone formation markers, procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide and bone-type alkaline phosphatase, increased slightly at 24 weeks and then decreased to baseline levels. At 24 and 72 weeks, the bone resorption markers, serum cross-linked N-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen and urinary cross-linked N-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen, were the same as or slightly lower than at baseline. Visual analogue scale scores for low back pain also decreased. Conclusions: The present results showed that once-weekly teriparatide may also be useful for osteoporosis patients with a high risk of fracture.

        Effect of the Annealing Temperature of P(VDF/TrFE) Thin Films on their Ferroelectric Properties

        The effect of annealing temperature on the micro and the crystal structures and the ferroelectric properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoro ethylene)(P(VDF/TrFE)) thin films was investigated. The X-ray diffraction results indicated that the crystallization of the film was enhanced at an annealing temperature above 100 ℃. On the other hand, the remnant polarization was increased by annealing at temperatures between 130 and 140 ℃. Therefore, the ferroelectric properties of the P(VDF/TrFE) films were formed to be improved by annealing at temperatures above Tc (123 ℃). The surface morphology and the piezoelectric responses were observed by scanning probe microscopy. The results indicated that small primary grains of P(VDF/TrFE) grew up to large secondary grains with increasing annealing temperature and that some of the small primary grains had large piezoelectric responses.

        Efficacy of once-weekly and twice-weekly injections of teriparatide by patient characteristics: A post hoc analysis of the TWICE study

        Objectives: To assess differences in efficacy of a 28.2-mg teriparatide formulation for twice-weekly use (2/ W-TPTD) by patient characteristics. Methods: A post hoc analysis was performed using data from a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, non-inferiority trial (TWICE study) conducted in Japan comparing the efficacies of once-weekly and twice-weekly injections of teriparatide (TPTD). Specifically, a stratified analysis of percentage changes from baseline was performed using the final data on lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) after a 48-week treatment period (n ¼ 251, 2/W-TPTD; n ¼ 239, a 56.5-mg teriparatide formulation for once-weekly use [1/W-TPTD]). Results: Across all subgroups defined by patient characteristics that included 9 or more subjects, the lumbar spine BMD increased significantly in both groups. In the 2/W-TPTD group, the percentage change was significantly higher in subjects with no non-vertebral fractures without large external force occurring at or after age 50 years versus those with such fractures. The lower the stratification in baseline lumbar spine BMD, total hip BMD, or femoral neck BMD, the greater was the percentage change. Conclusions: Whereas all subgroups can expect a significant improvement in lumbar spine BMD, there were some patient characteristics that affected the percentage increase in BMD.

        Precision of predicted 3D numerical solutions of vortex-induced oscillation for bridge girders with span-wise varying geometry

        A method of numerical analysis without conducting 3D wind tunnel model tests was examined in our previous study for predicting vortex-induced oscillation of bridge girders with span-wise varying geometry. The aerodynamic damping forces measured for plural wind tunnel 2D models were used in the analysis. A further study was conducted to examine the precision of solution obtained by this method. First, the responses of vortex-induced oscillation of two rocking models and a taut-strip bridge girder model with span-wise varying geometry were measured. Next, the responses of these models were numerically analyzed by means of this method, and then a comparison was made between the obtained $Vr-A-{\delta}_a$ contour diagram of each 3D model in the wind tunnel test and the diagram in the numerical analysis. Since close correlations were observed between each two $Vr-A-{\delta}_a$diagrams obtained in the model test and in the analysis in cases where the 3D model did not have strong three-dimensionality, our findings revealed that the predicted solution proved to be reasonably accurate.
