<P>Differential cross sections at t = t(min) and decay asymmetries for the gamma p -> phi p reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. These cross sections were used to determine the Pomeron strength factor. The cross sections and decay asymmetries are consistently described by the t-channel Pomeron and pseudoscalar exchange model in the E-gamma region above 2.37 GeV. In the lower energy region, an excess over the model prediction is observed in the energy dependence of the differential cross sections at t = t(min). This observation suggests that additional processes or interference effects between Pomeron exchange and other processes appear near the threshold region.</P>
Genotoxicity evaluation of electromagnetic fields generated by 835-MHz mobile phone frequency band

It is still unclear whether the exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) generated by mobile phone radiation is directly linked to cancer. We examined the biological effects of an EMF at 835 MHz, the most widely used communication frequency band in Korean CDMA mobile phone networks, on bacterial reverse mutation (Ames assay) and DNA stability (in vitro DNA degradation). In the Ames assay, tester strains alone or combined with positive mutagen were applied in an artificial mobile phone frequency EMF generator with continuous waveform at a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 4 W/kg for 48 h. In the presence of the 835-MHz EMF radiation, incubation with positive mutagen 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide and cumene hydroxide further increased the mutation rate in Escherichia coli WP2 and TA102, respectively, while the contrary results in Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA1535 treated with 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide and sodium azide, respectively, were shown as antimutagenic. However, these mutagenic or co-mutagenic effects of 835-MHz radiation were not significantly repeated in other relevant strains with same mutation type. In the DNA degradation test, the exposure to 835-MHz EMF did not change the rate of degradation observed using plasmid pBluescript SK(+) as an indicator. Thus, we suggest that 835-MHz EMF under the conditions of our study neither affected the reverse mutation frequency nor accelerated DNA degradation in vitro.

Shape memory polymer networks were prepared from blends of end-carboxylated telechelic poly(@?-caprolactone) (XPCL) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). The XPCL/ENR blends can form cross linked structure via interchain reaction between the reactive groups of each polymer during molding at high temperature. Degree of crosslinking of the blend network and their thermomechanical properties were characterized by gel content measurement, DSC and DMA. We found that the degree of crosslinking and crystalline melting transition temperatures was dependent upon the blend compositions as well as the molecular weight of the XPCL segment in the blends. The blends showed a good shape memory behavior such as good shape fixity as well as a high final recovery rate when they exhibit crystalline melting transition with a sufficiently high degree of crosslinking. And the response temperature of the recovery was well matched with T<SUB>m</SUB> of the samples.

In view of the effective recycling of animal waste, the fermentation characteristics of swine manure ensiled under various conditions were investigated as the first step to search how to reuse animal waste as feed for animals. The moisture content of swine manure was adjusted to 30, 50 and 70%, respectively and molasses was substituted at the levels of 0, 15 and 30% in each treatment. Small vinyl bags were used as silos for ensiling, and changes of the contents of various organic compounds were measured during the ensiling period of 0, 3, 10 and 30 days, respectively. The temperature for ensiling was constant to be 22℃ for all treatments. The silage pH which is generally used as a criterion to evaluate the fermentation quality of silage was significantly (p$lt;0.001) decreased as levels of moisture and molasses content were increased. In contrast, the content of water soluble carbohydrate was significantly(p$lt;0.01) decreased with higher contents of moisture and molasses. This results may indicate molasses were used as an effective source of energy for the fermentation of swine manure. However, because the values of pH in this study were higher in all treatments than that of the general forage silage, it was presumed that the supply of available energy for microbial growth was a~ot enough in all treatments of this experiment. Furthermore, this inference was supported by the fact that lactic acid was not detected in all treatments so that the fermentation was not progressed up to that of lactic acid formation. More detailed research regarding the sources and levels of available energy for microbial growth may be needed in the future particularly when ensiling swine manure.
