Attitudes of Students in the Eight ASEAN Free Flow of Labor Professions towards World Englishes

Sukanya Kaowiwattanakul 아시아테플 2018 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.15 No.1

This research study aimed to examine the attitudes of students in the eight ASEAN free flow of labor professions towards the notion of World Englishes and to investigate the role of universities in promoting World Englishes to prepare students for the ASEAN marketplace. The study sample comprised 1504 fourth-year students studying in the fields related to the eight professions: engineering, nursing, dentistry, architecture, surveying, medicine, accountancy, and tourism. Data collection was via questionnaires and semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The findings reveal both a pluricentric view and a centric view of the English language with these participants. The students seem to be aware of the existence of English varieties and realize the benefits and significance of knowing non-native English varieties for their future careers, particularly in ASEAN context. Nevertheless, they claim that either British or American English should be used in ASEAN for the most intelligibility. This study also found that education institutions currently still play only a minor role in promoting non-native English language varieties to students. The students’ responses also indicate their need to learn non-native English varieties.

Effects of different ratios and storage periods of liquid brewer’s yeast mixed with cassava pulp on chemical composition, fermentation quality and in vitro ruminal fermentation

        Sukanya Kamphayae,Hajime Kumagai,Wanna Angthong,Ramphrai Narmseelee,Smerjai Bureenok 아세아·태평양축산학회 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.4

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the chemical composition, fermentation quality and in vitro ruminal fermentation of various ratios and storage periods of liquid brewer’s yeast (LBY) mixed with cassava pulp (CVP). Methods: Four mixtures of fresh LBY and CVP were made (LBY0, LBY10, LBY20, and LBY30 for LBY:CVP at 0:100, 10:90, 20:80, and 30:70, respectively) on a fresh matter basis, in 500 g in plastic bags and stored at 30 to 32°C. After storage, the bags were opened weekly from weeks 0 to 4. Fermentation quality and in vitro gas production (IVGP) were determined, as well as the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and acid detergent lignin contents. Results: The contents of CP and EE increased, whereas all other components decreased, in proportion to LBY inclusion (p<0.01). The DM and OM contents gradually decreased in weeks 3 and 4 (p<0.05), while EE contents were lowest in week 0. The pH, ammonia nitrogen per total nitrogen (NH3-N/TN) and V-score in each mixture and storage period demonstrated superior fermentation quality (pH≤4.2, NH3-N/TN≤12.5%, and V-score>90%). The pH increased and NH3-N/TN decreased, with proportionate increases of LBY, whereas the pH decreased and NH3-N/TN increased, as the storage periods were extended (p<0.01). Although IVGP decreased in proportion to the amount of LBY inclusion (p<0.01), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) was unaffected by the mixture ratios. The highest IVGP and IVOMD were observed in week 0 (p<0.01). Conclusion: The inclusion of LBY (as high as 30%) into CVP improves the chemical composition of the mixture, thereby increasing the CP content, while decreasing IVGP, without decreasing fermentation quality and IVOMD. In addition, a preservation period of up to four weeks can guarantee superior fermentation quality in all types of mixtures. Therefore, we recommend limiting the use of CVP as a feed ingredient, given its low nutritional value and improving feed quality with the inclusion of LBY.

Evaluating the impact of flood inundation with the cloud computing platform over vegetation cover of Ganga Basin during COVID-19

        Sukanya Ghosh,Deepak Kumar,Rina Kumari 대한공간정보학회 2022 Spatial Information Research Vol.30 No.2

Around the month of July 2020, the people suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic got added burden of disastrous floods. The current study tries to understand the impact of flood inundation on the vegetation cover across the Ganga Basin with the help of a cloud-based computing platform like Google Earth Engine (GEE) in a near real-time scenario. This offers a semi-automatic scheme with customized algorithms to process the large scale of datasets to further analyze and derive the required information from space-based satellite images like Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The direct impact of floods on vegetation cover is assessed with the satellitederived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). The results of postflood NDVI and EVI readings showed a considerable reduction due to the protracted flood water submergence. The results show the flood extent maps for the selected regions for the lower Ganga Basin having inundations in parts of Bihar and West Bengal. This affects the settlements, agricultural land, and vegetation cover with damage to the large population. The outcomes of the work may be utilized to assess the precise flood-inundated areas at a faster rate to offer a faster response even in the pandemic.

Antagonistic Activity against Dirty Panicle Rice Fungal Pathogens and Plant Growth-Promoting Activity of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BAS23

        ( Sukanya Saechow ),( Anon Thammasittirong ),( Prasat Kittakoop ),( Surasak Prachya ),( Sutticha Na-ranong Thammasittirong ) 한국미생물생명공학회(구 한국산업미생물학회) 2018 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.28 No.9

Bacterial strain BAS23 was isolated from rice field soil and identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Based on dual culture method results, the bacterium BAS23 exhibited potent in vitro inhibitory activity on mycelial growth against a broad range of dirty panicle fungal pathogens of rice (Curvularia lunata, Fusarium semitectum and Helminthosporium oryzae). Cellfree culture of BAS23 displayed a significant effect on germ tube elongation and mycelial growth. The highest dry weight reduction (%) values of C. lunata, H. oryzae and F. semitectum were 92.7%, 75.7%, and 68.9%, respectively. Analysis of electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy revealed that the lipopeptides were iturin A with a C14 side chain (C14 iturinic acid), and a C15 side chain (C15 iturinic acid), which were produced by BAS23 when it was cultured in nutrient broth (NB) for 72 h at 30°C. BAS23, the efficient antagonistic bacterium, also possessed in vitro multiple traits for plant growth promotion and improved rice seedling growth. The results indicated that BAS23 represents a useful option either for biocontrol or as a plant growthpromoting agent.

Validity of Principal Diagnoses in Discharge Summaries and ICD-10 Coding Assessments Based on National Health Data of Thailand

Sukanya Chongthawonsatid 대한의료정보학회 2017 Healthcare Informatics Research Vol.23 No.4

Objectives: This study examined the validity of the principal diagnoses on discharge summaries and coding assessments. Methods: Data were collected from the National Health Security Office (NHSO) of Thailand in 2015. In total, 118,971 medical records were audited. The sample was drawn from government hospitals and private hospitals covered by the Universal Coverage Scheme in Thailand. Hospitals and cases were selected using NHSO criteria. The validity of the principal diagnoses listed in the “Summary and Coding Assessment” forms was established by comparing data from the discharge summaries with data obtained from medical record reviews, and additionally, by comparing data from the coding assessments with data in the computerized ICD (the data base used for reimbursement-purposes). Results: The summary assessments had low sensitivities (7.3%–37.9%), high specificities (97.2%–99.8%), low positive predictive values (9.2%–60.7%), and high negative predictive values (95.9%–99.3%). The coding assessments had low sensitivities (31.1%–69.4%), high specificities (99.0%–99.9%), moderate positive predictive values (43.8%–89.0%), and high negative predictive values (97.3%–99.5%). The discharge summaries and codings often contained mistakes, particularly the categories “Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases”, “Symptoms, signs, and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified”, “Factors influencing health status and contact with health services”, and “Injury, poisoning, and certain other consequences of external causes”. Conclusions: The validity of the principal diagnoses on the summary and coding assessment forms was found to be low. The training of physicians and coders must be strengthened to improve the validity of discharge summaries and codings.

Role of Transformative Learning in Developing Global Mindedness in an EFL Literature Studies Context

Sukanya Kaowiwattanakul 아시아영어교육학회 2020 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.17 No.2

The purposes of this research were to examine the role of transformative learning on the development of the global mindedness of university students in an English as a foreign language literature studies context and to explore student attitudes towards their transformative learning experiences. Participants included 25 second-year English major students who were enrolled in the Introduction to Literature Course in the first semester of the academic year 2018 at a university in Thailand. The instruments used for this study were six lesson plans using transformative learning theory, a global mindedness scale, a reflective writing activity, semi-structured interview questions, and a classroom observation schedule. The t-test, the mean and standard deviation calculations including content analysis were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that the transformative learning experiences had a significant role in improving student global mindedness in the literature studies class via a process of worldview changing; an acknowledgement of differences of ideas, culture, and race; and a disorienting dilemma. The students also expressed positive attitudes towards their transformative learning experiences in the literature studies class.

Anatomical knowledge of zygomatico-buccal plexus in a cadaveric study

        Sukanya Uruwan,Chalermquan Rungsawang,Tawiwan Sareebot,Tanvaa Tansatit 대한해부학회 2023 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.56 No.3

The details of the facial nerve pattern were clearly explained in the parotid gland (PG), lateral area of the face, and periorbital areas to prevent the unexpected outcome of medical intervention. However, it remains unclear whether information about the zygomatico-buccal plexus (ZBP) in the masseteric and buccal regions. Therefore, this study aimed to help clinicians avoid this ZBP injury by predicting their common location. This study was conducted in forty-two hemifaces of twenty-nine embalmed cadavers by conventional dissection. The characteristics of the buccal branch (BB) and the ZBPwere investigated in the mid-face region. The results presented that the BB gave 2–5 branches to emerge from the PG. According to the masseteric and buccal regions, the BB were arranged into ZBP in three patterns including an incomplete loop (11.9%), a single-loop (31.0%), and a multi-loop (57.1%). The mean distance and diameter of the medial line of the ZBP at the corner of the mouth level were 31.6 (6.7) and 1.5 (0.6) mm respectively, while at the alar base level were 22.5 (4.3) and 1.1 (0.6) mm respectively. Moreover, the angular nerve arose from the superior portion of the ZBP at the alar base level. The BB formed a multiloop mostly and showed a constant medial line of ZBP in an area approximately 30 mm lateral to the corner of the mouth, and 20 mm lateral to the alar base. Therefore, it is recommended that physicians should be very careful when performing facial rejuvenation in the mid-face region.

Efficacy and safety of different bupivacaine concentrations in periarticular infiltration combined with adductor canal block for bilateral total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial

( Sukanya Dej‑arkom ),( Pawinee Pangthipampai ),( Weerawadee Chandranipapongse ),( Somruedee Chatsirichareonkul ),( Rapeepat Narkbunnam ),( Keerati Charoencholvanich ),( Suwida Tangchittam ),( Arissar 대한슬관절학회 2024 대한슬관절학회지 Vol.36 No.-

Background Pain management for bilateral total knee arthroplasty (BTKA) often combines adductor canal block (ACB) with periarticular infiltration (PAI). However, concerns arise regarding local anesthetic toxicity. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of different bupivacaine concentrations in simultaneous BTKA. Methods Patients undergoing simultaneous BTKA under spinal anesthesia were included in the study. They received ACB with 50 mg bupivacaine for each thigh. The patients were then randomized into two groups. Group A was administered a PAI of 100 mg bupivacaine per knee (totaling 300 mg bupivacaine for ACB and PAI). Group B received a PAI with 50 mg bupivacaine per knee (totaling 200 mg bupivacaine for ACB and PAI). Postoperative pain was assessed using a visual analog scale at 4-h intervals for 48 h after surgery. Plasma bupivacaine concentrations were measured at eight specified times. Postsurgery walking ability was also evaluated. Results Among the 57 participants analyzed, visual analog scale pain scores revealed no significant differences between the two groups. An interim analysis of plasma bupivacaine concentrations in both groups indicated no significant disparities. In group B, 93.1% managed to walk with assistance within 48 h, as opposed to group A’s 71.4% (P = 0.041). Conclusions Combining ACB with 100 mg bupivacaine and PAI with another 100 mg bupivacaine provided effectivepain relief. This combination also had a better safety profile and led to more patients walking postsurgery than when combining ACB with 100 mg bupivacaine and PAI with 200 mg bupivacaine. Thus, ACB combined with PAI with a total dose of 200 mg bupivacaine appears suitable for simultaneous BTKA.
