This paper describes an implementation of the 155M Physical Layer ASIC for ATM Network-Node Interface, which contains Transmit Synthesizer, Receive Bit Synchronizer, Transmission Convergence, the microprocessor interface and UTOPIA (Universal Test & Operation of the PHY Interface for ATM). This ASIC fully comforms the recommendations of ITU-T and ATM forum. This chip was implemented in a 0.8 pm double metal, n-well CMOS process. A total of 320,960 transistors were integrated on 9 mm × 9.2 mm silicon chip that consumes a maximum of 1.02 W power @ 5 V using 155 MHz clock.

Purpose: Preconditioning due to activation of AMPK might reduce ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in the kidney, based on the key role of AMPK in preserving ATP. To evaluate this possibility, the effect of preconditioning with 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside (AICAR), AMPK activator, before sustained ischemia was investigated. Methods: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing approximately 220-250 g were used. To induce renal ischemia, a laparotomy was performed under ketamine and xylazine hydrochloride, and the blood supply to both kidneys was interrupted by placement of vessel clamps at the level of the renal pedicles. Reflow was initiated by removing the clamps. The following experimental groups were defined 1. Acute renal ischemia 0 sec, 10 min, 15 min, 2. AICAR treatment, 3. Sham group (S), 4. Ischemia/Reperfusion group (I/R), 5. AICAR+I/R group (A+I/R), 6. AraA (Adenine-9-b-D-arabinofuranoside, an AMPK) inhibitor+AICAR+I/R group (AraA+A+I/R). Results: There was only faint AMPK phosphorylation in the sham group. After 10 minutes of ischemia, or AICAR preconditioning however, Thr172 phosphorylation of AMPK was increased (p<0.05). The serum levels of BUN and creatinine were significantly decreased in AICAR preconditioning group (A+I/R). (128.0±7.33 mg/dL, 4.18±0.27 mg/dL vs. 90.2±11.13 mg/dL, 2.58±0.7 mg/dL, p<0.05), but these effects were attenuated by AMPK inhibitor, AraA (AraA+A+I/R group). In quantitative analysis of tubular injury, tubular injury score in AICAR preconditioning group significantly decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: The AMPK activator AICAR has a protective effect against renal I/R injury.

The eco-friendly preservatives such as ACQ or CUAZ have been used in landscape architectural facilities these days. In this study, the decay efficacies of ACQ treatments were evaluated according to domestic veneer species, concentration of ACQ, weathering test, adhesive type, and fungus type. In case of veneer species, hinoki cypress and yellow poplar showed the highest and lowest decay resistance, respectively. And the decay resistance appeared to be greater in plywoods bonded by resorcinol resin-bonded plywood and non-weathering treated plywood than polyurethane resin-bonded plywood and weathering treated plywood.
Development of MK $III^{TM}$ Type Large Arctic LNG Carrier

It is a very challenging work to design large Arctic LNG carrier, since LNG carrier requires high reliability for the structural safety and the environment of Arctic region is known to be very severe. Therefore, special attention should be paid for the verifying the structural safety of LNG career particularly with regard to LNG leakage. In this paper, the safety of the hull structure and cargo containment system of 208K MK $III^{TM}$ type LNG carriers with Arc4 is investigated based on the direct calculation of ice loads as well as wave loads. From the whole investigation, it is clear that the developed vessel - 208K MK $III^{TM}$ type LNG carrier with RMRS Ice class Arc4 - has enough strength and is safe to be operated in Arctic region.

Background: There have been many epidemiologic studies on community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) among children, most of which had substantial limitations. This study investigated the etiologic distribution and clinical characteristics of CAP in Korean children for 5 years before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: A retrospective analysis of children hospitalized for CAP at 4 referral hospitals during 2015-2020 was performed. Cases in which bronchiolitis was suspected or pulmonary infiltration was not evident on chest radiography (CXR) were excluded. Viruses and atypical bacteria were defined as detected when positive in the polymerase chain reaction test performed for respiratory specimens. Serologic testing result for Mycoplasma pneumoniae was incorporated with strict interpretation. Pyogenic bacteria were included only when cultured in blood, pleural fluid, or bronchoalveolar lavage, but those cultured in endotracheal aspirate or sputum when the case was clinically evident bacterial pneumonia were also included. Results: A total of 2,864 cases of suspected pneumonia were selected by diagnosis code and CXR findings. Medical chart and CXR review excluded nosocomial pneumonia and cases without evident infiltration, resulting in 517 (18.1%) CAP cases among 489 children. Regarding clinical symptoms, high fever was present in 59.4% and dyspnea in 19.9% of cases. Respiratory support was required for 29.2% of patients, including mechanical ventilation for 3.9%. Pathogens were detected in 49.9% of cases, with viruses in 32.3%, atypical bacteria in 17.8%, and pyogenic bacteria in 2.3% of cases. As single pathogens, M. pneumoniae (16.8%) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, 13.7%) were the most common. Parenteral β-lactam and macrolide antibiotics were administered in 81.6% and 50.7% of cases, respectively. A total of 12 (2.3%) cases resulted in poor outcomes, including 3 deaths. Conclusion: M. pneumoniae and RSV were the most commonly detected pathogens of pediatric CAP, which was selected by strict clinical and radiologic criteria. It is necessary to carefully decide whether to use parenteral antibiotics based on the epidemiology and clinical features of CAP in children.

The absorption of CO₂ from a mixture of CO₂/N₂ gas was carried out using a flat-stirred vessel and the polytetrafluoroethylene hollow fiber contained aqueous 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) solution. The reaction of CO₂ with AMP was confirmed to be a second order reversible reaction with fast-reaction region. The mass transfer resistance in the membrane side obtained from the comparison of the measured absorption rates of CO₂ in a hollow fiber contained liquid membrane with a flat-stirred vessel corresponded to about 90% of overall-mass-transfer resistance. The mass transfer coefficient of hollow fiber phase could be evaluated, which was independent of CO₂ loading.
Expression of DOG1, PDGFRA, and p16 in Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors

Background/Aims: The diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) relies on the demonstration of KIT expression, but KIT expression is absent or reduced in approximately 15% of GIST. Methods: Eighty-one GISTs were diagnosed between January 1998 and December 2007 at the Department of Pathology at both Chungnam National University Hospital and Eulji University Hospital, Daejeon. Medical history, patient follow-up, and radiographic data were collected if available in the medical records. To determine diagnostic and prognostic markers for GISTs focused on PDGFRA mutation and clinicopathologic features, we analyzed 81 GIST cases for KIT, PDGFRA, DOG1, and p16 expression and for mutation of PDGFRA genes. Results: Among 81 GIST cases, 20 high risk cases (24.7%) were recurred or metastasized. Immunohistochemically, KIT was positive in 76 (93.8%), PDGFRA in 75 (92.7%), and DOG1 in 77 (95.1%). With a cutoff value of 50%, p16 expression was positive in 26 cases were positive (32.1%). A correlation between p16 expression or negative DOG1 expression and recurrence or metastasis was demonstrated (p<0.05). Four cases showed a missense mutation in exon 12 of PDGFRA gene, three of these were of epithelioid GISTs. Two cases showed a silent mutation in exon 18 of PDGFRA. Conclusions: These results indicate that the expression of DOG1 and PDGFRA is observed in a majority of GIST cases. Expression of p16 and negative DOG1 expression is predictive for development of recurrence and/ or metastasis. Even though mutation of the PDGFRA gene is frequently seen in epithelioid GISTs, a clinicopathologic correlation was not demonstrated. (Gut Liver 2011;5:171-180)
