Lactase non-persistence (LNP), one of the causes of lactose intolerance, is related to lactase gene associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Since the frequency of LNP varies by ethnic group and country, the research to reveal the presence or absence of LNP for specific people has been conducted worldwide. However, in East Asia, the study of lactase gene associated SNPs have not been sufficiently examined so far using ancient human specimens from archaeological sites. In our study of Joseon period human remains (n=14), we successfully revealed genetic information of lactase gene associated SNPs (rs1679771596, rs41525747, rs4988236, rs4988235, rs41380347, rs869051967, rs145946881 and rs182549), further confirming that as for eight SNPs, the pre-modern Korean people had a lactase non-persistent genotype. Our report contributes to the establishment of LNP associated SNP analysis technique that can be useful in forthcoming studies on human bones and mummy samples from East Asian archaeological sites.
Adsorption of Uranyl Salts from Acidic Solutions by Activated Charcoal

This work indicates the removal of uranium from strongly acidic solutions by adsorption on activated charcoal. The adsorption of uranium from chloride, nitrate, perchlorate, and sulphate solutions at pH 2 can be represented by ◁화학식 삽입▷ (원문을 참조하세요) At pH's less than 2.5, the adsorption of uranium on charcoal was a function of the hydrogen ion concentration as expressed by the equation. ◁화학식 삽입 (원문을 참조하세요) The zero temperature coefficient and the reversibility of the uranium adsorption on charcoal s ugges ted a physical adsorption.

N/A Background/Aims: Angiogenesis, the induction of the formation of blood vessels, is critical to the development, progression, and metastasis of animal and human tumors. Tumor cells may produce factors which either induce or inhibit angiogenesis and that the onset of angiogenic activity is determined by the balance of these factors may be generalizable to other tumors. Hepatocellular carcinoma is hypervascular tumor and transcatheter arterial embolization(TAE) is widely used to treat patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. To evaluate changes of angiogenic factors after TAE for hepatocellular carcinoma, we investigated serum angiogenin, bFGF and EGF at the pre-TAE and the post-TAE among the seven patients with hepatocelluar carcinoma. Methods: Angiogenin, bFGF and EGF concentrations in sera were measured at pre-TAE and 3 days after TAE by employing ELISA. The statistical analysis was evaluated by Student's t-test. Results: 1) Angiogenin concentration at pre-TAE and post-TAE was 197.57+28.82ng/ml(mean+standard error) and 225.89>32.06ng/ml, respectively(p=0.022). 2) bFGF concentration at pre-TAE and post-TAE was 6.71+1.83 pg/ml and 21.68+5.58 pg/ml, respectively(p=0.036). 3) EGF concentra- tion at pre-TAE and post-TAE was 195.09+40.29 pg/rnl and 258.11+36.12 pg/ml, respectively (p=0.014). No correlation, however, was present among angiogenin, bFGF, and EGF at both of pre-TAE and post-TAE state. Conclusions: These results indicate that certain angiogenic factors, such as angiogenin, bFGF, EGF, were increased significantly at post-TAE in comparison to pre- TAE, which may reduce the therapeutic effect of TAE for hepatocellular carcinoma. We suggested that the tissue injury/destruction associated with ischemia by hepatic artery embolization are generally considered to represent a fundamental stimulus for angiogenesis in post-TAE. Therefore, suppression of angiogenesis at post-TAE may be important in improving survival for the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma since tumor growth and metastasis are angiogenesis-dependent. A relatively simple multiplexing system, especially designed for transmitting analog and digital signals through the narrow band channel by utilizing power difference of the two signals. The digital signal, preprocessed to be stronger than the analog signal at the ratio of 2 or more is simply added to the analog signal at the transmitting end. At the receiving end, the digital signal is seperated from the analog signal by hard limiter while the analog signal from the composite signal. The experiments conducted on the test system designed by the author has shown an Automatic Gain Control circuit; an average S/N of more 20dB can been expected in analog channel with the bit error of less than 10%.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the optimum design method for a transfer system, using pseudo noise code polarity modulation(PNCPM) similar to the direct sequence(DS) method. When 1KHz sinusoid was transmitted as an input signal in the analog transfer system, the output characteristics was observed to yield the most satisfactory result. The application of a clock signal using clock signals reproduced from signals transmitted as a format of bipolar pulse in PNCPM, it was found that synchronized pulses were transformed into asynchronized ones which is the most difficult and problem in SS communication.
