        Recent advances for serial processes of hazardous chemicals in fully integrated microfluidic systems

        The development and enlargement of toxic and hazardous chemicals are severely limited by health and safety concerns. We summarize studies on fully integrated micro-chemical systems and total processes to reduce accidental exposure to various regents that are toxic, explosive, or carcinogenic, which significantly improved the safety of work involving risky compounds. This review covers the leak-free continuous-flow processes of hazardous chemicals in fully integrated microfluidic systems, specially denoted as micro-total envelope systems (μ-TESs), that are conducting a serial process of the generation of hazardous reagents, in-situ purification and separation, subsequent reaction, and product isolation with improved efficiencies. These attempts suggest safe and efficient tools and processes of useful but hazardous chemicals for researchers and manufacturing workers in the field of pharmaceutic discovery, natural products, biology as well as materials synthesis.

        This study bridges the gap between management accounting, CG and entrepreneurship disciplines. Unlike previous studies, this study adopts a positivist approach to develop a contingency framework of CG that operationalises the conformance and performance dimensions into measurable constructs. The contingency framework also adopts a holistic approach that investigates the interrelationships between VBM, CG and CE, as important predictors of organizational performance, which can provide insights into the complementary or conflicting relationships among these predictors in their effects on organizational performance.

        Pancreas transplant in type 1 diabetes mellitus: the emerging role of islet cell transplant

        Pancreas transplant, both whole pancreas and islet cell, is a known therapeutic option for treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. Islet cell transplant began as an experimental therapy but is emerging to be quite beneficial due to less surgical risk and fewer complications. It is also considered a promising option in pediatric patients. In this review the authors discuss the indications, procedure, and benefits of islet cell transplant along with newer strategies for improving outcomes.

        Optimization and evaluation of multigrain gluten-enriched instant noodles

        Central composite design was employed to optimize the cooking, textural and overall acceptability score of the instant dried noodles prepared with multigrain flour and gluten incorporation. Sorghum flour (X1, 10–50%), soy flour (X2, 10–20%) and gluten (X3, 2–4%) were the independent variables investigated with respect to five response variables including cooking time (Y1), cooked weight (Y2), cooking loss (Y3), hardness (Y4) and overall acceptability (Y5). The optimum level was found to be 24.61% sorghum, 13.23% soy and 2.95% gluten resulting in cooking time = 9 ± 0.60 min, cooked weight = 17.30 ± 0.17 g, cooking loss = 11.46 ± 0.64 g/100 g, hardness = 36.65 ± 3.2 N with overall acceptability score of 7.3 ± 0.71, respectively. Optimized noodles showed higher ash (3.40 ± 0.11%), protein (16.63 ± 0.55%), fiber (4.78 ± 0.04%) as well as iron content (4.53 ± 0.02 mg/ 100 g) than the control (0.83 ± 0.02%, 13.13 ± 0.84%, 0.00 and 2.38 mg/100 g) and Maggie noodles (3.19 ± 0.01%, 10.53 ± 0.30%, 0.41 ± 0.50% and 0.22 ± 0.00 mg/100 g) made with refined wheat flour. Optimized noodles also revealed good total phenolic content (84.57 ± 1.42 mg GAE/100 g DW) and 1,1-diphenyl- 2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity (19.64 ± 0.20%). Hence, optimized noodles have substantial potential as a protein–fiber-rich complementary food to improve the nutrient delivery of mid-day meal scheme and satisfying the protein requirement of primary class children (12 g/ child/day) as laid down by MHRD (India) under the scheme.

        Comparative analysis of VMT genes/proteins in selected plant species with emphasis on bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

        Background In recent years, the study of molecular basis of uptake, transport and utilization of grain Fe/Zn (GFe/GZn) in wheat has been an active area of research. As a result, it has been shown that a number of transporters are involved in uptake and transport of Fe. In a recent study, knockout of a transporter gene OsVMT (VACUOLAR MUGINEIC ACID TRANSPORTER) in rice was shown to be involved in Fe homoeostasis. Objective In this study, we analysed VMT genes among six monocots and three dicots with major emphasis on wheat VMT genes (TaVMTs), taking OsVMT gene as a reference. Methods and results Using OsVMT gene as a reference, VMT genes were identified and sequence similarities were examined among six monocots and three dicots. Each VMT protein carried one functional domain and 7 to 10 distinct motifs (including 9 novel motifs). The qRT-PCR analysis showed differential expression by all the six TaVMT genes in pairs of contrasting wheat genotypes with high (FAR4 and WB02) and low (K8027 and HD3226) GFe/GZn at two different grain filling stages (14 DAA and 28 DAA). TaVMT1 genes showed up-regulation in high GFe/Zn genotypes relative to low GFe/Zn genotypes, whereas the TaVMT2 genes showed down-regulation or nonsignificant up-regulation in a few cases. Conclusions At 14 DAA, each of the six TaVMT genes exhibited higher expression in wheat genotypes with high GFe and GZn relative to those with low GFe and GZn, suggesting major role of VMT genes in improvement of grain Fe/Zn homoeostasis, thus making TaVMT genes useful for improvement in Fe/Zn in wheat grains.
