        Immobilization of the Hyperthermophilic Archaeon Thermococcus onnurineus Using Amine-coated Silica Material for H2 Production

        Previously we reported that the hyperthermophilic archaeon, Thermococcus onnurineus NA1 is capable of producing hydrogen (H2) from formate, CO or starch. In this study, we describe the immobilization of T. onnurineus NA1 as an alternative means of H2 production. Amine-coated silica particles were effective in immobilizing T. onnurineus NA1 by electrostatic interaction, showing a maximum cell adsorption capacity of 71.7 mg-dried cells per g of particle. In three cycles of repeated-batch cultivation using sodium formate as the sole energy source, immobilized cells showed reproducible H2 production with a considerable increase in the initial production rate from 2.3 to 4.0 mmol l-1 h-1, mainly due to the increase in the immobilized cell concentration as the batch culture was repeated. Thus, the immobilized-cell system of T. onnurineus NA1 was demonstrated to be feasible for H2 production. This study is the first example of immobilized cells of hyperthermophilic archaea being used for the production of H2.

      • 유아용 감각 인형 및 증강현실 콘텐츠 개발

        본 연구에서는 유아용 감각 인형을 직접 제작하여 이를 활용하는 증강현실 콘텐츠를 함께 개발하였다. 인형 속에 중강 현실의 마커를 삽입하는 방식으로, 유아용 감각 인형 중 시각, 청각, 촉각의 3가지 감각에 대해 표현되는 감각 인형 , 감각 북을 제작하였으며, 각각의 감각에 따른 표현 내용과 표현 기법에 따라 증강현실 콘덴츠를 제작하 였다. 이를 기반으로 감각인형의 활용성과 증강현실의 교육 효과를 고찰하였다. We nave developed a sense doll for children and virtual reality contents utilizing the doll. Using markers of virtual reality inside the doll, senses o f seeing, listening and hearing have been represented as the sense doll and sense book. Also virtual reality contents have been developed following their contents and ways of representations. Application o f the sense doll and its effects o f education were analyzed based on the development.

        한국-유라시아간 해륙복합운송 문제점 및 해결 우선순위 분석

        2018년 남북정상의 4.27 판문점 선언으로 한반도의 평화 및 협력 분위기가 조성되고, 그해 6월에는 국제철도협력기구(OSJD) 가입으로 한반도를 포함하여 중국, 러시아 등 유라시아와 연계하는 복합물류체계 기반이 마련되었다. 본 논문에서는 한반도와 유라시아를 효율적으로 연결하는 복합물류 네트워크 구축하는데 애로사항을 파악하기 위하여 현재 대륙철도를 이용하고 있는 실무전문가를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시했다. 설문항목은 국경통과 절차, 기술, 시설, 운영, 정부지원 측면 등 5가지로 나누어 애로정도와 해결 우선순위 점수를 조사했다. 그 결과 한국-유라시아간 국제 복합운송 문제점 중에서 우선 해결해야 할 과제로는 환적 시설을 개선하고, 통과국마다 검사하는 것을 폐지하고 통관서류를 간소화해야하며, 운임변동을 최소화하는 방안 마련 등이 선정되었다. 결론적으로 한반도와 대륙철도 연계 및 복합운송 활성화를 위해서는 첫째, 국경에서의 궤간 변경을 원활하게 하기 위한 환적 시스템 개발을 국제공동으로 실시해야 하고, 둘째 남·북·중·러 철도시설 및 운영시설을 표준화해야 하며, 셋째, 통관간소화, 정기 발차, 운임 변동 정보 공유 등을 위한 남·북·중·러의 국제협력이 필요하고, 마지막으로 정부 차원에서 블록트레인 구성을 위한 물량 확보 방안을 마련하고 새로운 비즈니스 모델을 개발해야 할 것으로 판단된다. The Panmunjom Declaration adopted by the leaders of South and North Korea on April 27, 2018, has created an environment conducive for peace and cooperation in the Korean Peninsula. In the June of last year, South Korea has joined the Organization for Cooperation between Railways (OSJD). The membership of OSJD has established a solid foundation for restoring a multimodal logistics system that connects the Korean peninsula to Eurasia countries, including China and Russia. In this paper, a questionnaire survey targeting working-level experts was conducted to find the barriers in constructing multimodal logistics that efficiently connect the port-continental railways of the Korean peninsula and the Eurasian nations. Survey items were divided into five categories—border crossing procedures, technology, facilities, operation, and government support. As a result, among the most important problems of international multimodal logistics in Eurasia that need to be solved on priority include improving transshipment facilities, eliminating inspection carried out at every country for transit, simplifying documents for customs clearance, and minimizing the changes in freight rates. In conclusion, for vitalizing the connection between the Korean peninsula and the continental railways, it is necessary to develop a transshipment system to facilitate the changes in tracks at the borders by making a joint effort with the international community. Second, railway and operational systems in South Korea, North Korea, China, and Russia should be standardized. Third, international cooperation among South Korea, North Korea, China, and Russia is essential for simplifying customs clearance at borders, priority departure of domestic cargo, sharing information about the changes in freight rates, and so on. Finally, the government should come up with measures to secure the quantity of cargo required to form block trains, while developing new business models.

      • Coexistence of ZigBee-Based WBAN and WiFi for Health Telemonitoring Systems

        <P>The development of telemonitoring via wireless body area networks (WBANs) is an evolving direction in personalized medicine and home-based mobile health. A WBAN consists of small, intelligent medical sensors which collect physiological parameters such as electrocardiogram, electroencephalography, and blood pressure. The recorded physiological signals are sent to a coordinator via wireless technologies, and are then transmitted to a healthcare monitoring center. One of the most widely used wireless technologies in WBANs is ZigBee because it is targeted at applications that require a low data rate and long battery life. However, ZigBee-based WBANs face severe interference problems in the presence of WiFi networks. This problem is caused by the fact that most ZigBee channels overlap with WiFi channels, severely affecting the ability of healthcare monitoring systems to guarantee reliable delivery of physiological signals. To solve this problem, we have developed an algorithm that controls the load in WiFi networks to guarantee the delay requirement for physiological signals, especially for emergency messages, in environments with coexistence of ZigBee-based WBAN and WiFi. Since WiFi applications generate traffic with different delay requirements, we focus only on WiFi traffic that does not have stringent timing requirements. In this paper, therefore, we propose an adaptive load control algorithm for ZigBee-based WBAN/WiFi coexistence environments, with the aim of guaranteeing that the delay experienced by ZigBee sensors does not exceed a maximally tolerable period of time. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm guarantees the delay performance of ZigBee-based WBANs by mitigating the effects of WiFi interference in various scenarios.</P>

        Response to Neoadjuvant Therapy and Prognosis in Patients with Resectable Pancreatic Cancer: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis

        Background/Aims: Controversy regarding the effectiveness of neoadjuvant therapy for resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) still exists. Here, we aimed to identify the potential benefits of neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery for resectable PDAC. Methods: We reviewed radiologically resectable PDAC patients who received resection with curative intent at a tertiary hospital in South Korea between January 2012 and August 2019. A total of 202 patients underwent curative resection for resectable PDAC: 167 underwent surgical resection first during this period, and 35 received neoadjuvant chemotherapy/chemoradiation therapy followed by surgery. Resectable PDAC patients were subdivided, and 1:3 propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to reduce selection bias. Results: Compared with the group that received surgery first, the group that received neoadjuvant treatment followed by surgery had significantly smaller tumors (22.0 mm vs 27.0 mm, p=0.004), a smaller proportion of patients with postoperative pathologic T stage (p=0.026), a smaller proportion of patients with lymphovascular invasion (20.0% vs 40.7%, p=0.022), and a larger proportion of patients with negative resection margins (74.3% vs 51.5%, p=0.049). After PSM, the group that received neoadjuvant therapy had a significantly longer progression-free survival than those in the group that underwent surgery first (29.6 months vs 15.1 months, p=0.002). Overall survival was not significantly different between the two groups after PSM analysis. Conclusions: We observed significantly better surgical outcomes and progression-free survival with the addition of neoadjuvant therapy to the management of resectable PDAC. However, despite PSM, there was still selection bias due to the use of different regimens between the groups receiving surgery first and neoadjuvant therapy. Large homogeneous samples are needed in the future prospective studies. (Gut Liver 2022;16:118-128)
