The purpose of this study was carried out an epidemiological survey on the prevalence rate of the canine heartworms in Seoul City and the districts of Pa-Ju, Seong-Nam and Po-Chon in Kyonggi province of Korea from September 1994 to the end of September 1995. The blood samples from 292 male and 193 female dogs (pet, 363 ; fighting dogs, 60 ; working dogs, 62) were examined for the adult heartworms cuticle antibodies using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELSA) kits. The test was designed to detect the antibodies of the host against the specific cuticle antigens produced with the adult heartworms.

<P>Superlattice thin films, which are used in thermoelectric (TE) devices for small-scale solid-state cooling and for generating electrical power, have recently been attracting attention due to their low dimensionality, low thermal conductivity, and enhanced power factor. Considering the measurement techniques for characterizing TE properties, very limited information, including cross-plane Seebeck coefficients of superlattice films, has been reported. This information is required for the assessment of the interface between the films and to understand phonon scattering in superlattice films. In this report, thermally stable cross-plane thermoelectric Seebeck coefficients of Al2O3/ZnO (AO/ZnO) superlattice films are presented, at temperature differences (Δ<I>T</I>) ranging from 2 to 12 K. Longitudinal (in-plane) thermal diffusion in the Cu/AO/ZnO/Cu samples, which occurred during the measurements due to the size differences among the samples located between a micro-Peltier and aluminum nitride cooling plate, was investigated. The cross-plane Seebeck coefficients of 3- and 6-cycled AO/ZnO superlattice films were determined to be ∼9.4 ± 0.4 and ∼30.6 ± 0.7 μV K−1, respectively, showing stable values in the evaluated Δ<I>T</I> range. Two distinct phenomena, in-plane thermal diffusion and the effect of the environment, were identified in cross-plane Seebeck measurements as dominant factors controlling the temperature coefficient of AO/ZnO superlattice films. In addition, a new TE parameter, the Seebeck temperature coefficient, was proposed for superlattice films.</P>
Detection of Smoking in Elevator Using Average Intensity Measure
Seong-Yoon Shin,Sang-Won Lee 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Vol.10 No.8
Smoking in elevators would give children and weak women a deadly blow. Latest no-smoking laws and increasing the price of cigarettes decreased smoking rate drastically. However, since this phenomenon is a transient one, the smoking rate seems to be increasing again to the previous level. In our research, we above all chose people who smoked in elevators. The method of sampling key frame is Average Intensity Measure. This method uses average intensity of whole image for each RGB color channel in order to detect scene change. If white color (255) occurs by a certain pixel after reducing the subject domain of sampled key frame to face domain, it is considered as smoking. These extracted scenes could be provided as a evidence of forensics in police stations or courts.

Background/Aims: The SAMe-TT2R2 score is used for assessing anticoagulation control (AC) quality with warfarin. However, it is hard to apply SAMe-TT2R2 score in Asian patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), because it has not been proven in those populations. This study aimed to validate the SAMe-TT2R2 score in Asian patients with AF and suggest a modified SAMe- TT2R2 score for this population. Methods: We analyzed 710 Korean patients with AF who were using warfarin. The AC quality was assessed as the mean time in therapeutic range (TTR). Each component of SAMe-TT2R2 score was evaluated for the relationship with AC. Further clinical factors that predict AC were analyzed. Identified factors were re-assorted and constructed as SA2Me-TTR scoring system. Results: Of the components of the SAMe-TT2R2 score, female, age, and rhythm control were associated with AC. Heart failure and renal insufficiency were newly identified factors associated with AC. The modified SA2Me-TTR score was reconstructed with the relevant risk factors (S, female gender, 1 point; A, age < 60 yr, 2 points; Me, medical history of heart failure, 1 point; T, treatment for rhythm control, 1 point; T, history of stroke or transient ischemic attack, 1 point; R, renal insufficiency, 1 point). The modified SA2Me-TTR score demonstrated an excellent relationship with the grading of AC. The modified SA2Me-TTR score ≤ 1 identified patients with good AC (hazard ratio 2.46, 95% CI 1.75–3.47). Conclusions: The modified SA2Me-TTR score was useful for guiding oral anticoagulants selection in Asian patients with AF.

Background: Bivalent booster mRNA vaccines containing the omicron-variant strains have been introduced worldwide in the autumn of 2022. Nevertheless, the omicron subvariants evoked another large coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic wave in late 2022 and early 2023. Methods: A retrospective, test-negative, case-control study was conducted to estimate the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of bivalent COVID-19 vaccines in 8 university hospitals between January and February 2023. The case and control groups were divided based on nasopharyngeal COVID-19 real-time polymerase chain reaction results and matched based on age, sex, hospital, and date (week) of the test performed. The VE of the BA.1- or BA.4/BA.5- based mRNA vaccines were estimated. VE was calculated using the 1−adjusted odds ratio from multivariable logistic regression. Results: In total, 949 patients and 947 controls were enrolled in this study. VE for the BA.4/ BA.5-based bivalent mRNA vaccine was 43% (95% confidence interval [CI], 17, 61%). In subgroup analysis based on age and underlying medical conditions, BA.4/BA.5-based bivalent mRNA vaccine was effective against old adults aged ≥ 65-years (VE, 55%; 95% CI, 23, 73%) and individuals with comorbidities (VE, 54%; 95% CI, 23, 73%). In comparison, the BA.1-based bivalent mRNA vaccine did not demonstrate statistically significant effectiveness (VE, 25%; 95% CI, −8, 49%). Conclusion: The BA.4/BA.5-based bivalent mRNA booster vaccine provided significant protection against COVID-19 in the Korean adults, especially in the older adults aged ≥ 65 years and in individuals with underlying medical conditions.
Measurement of Sleep and Understanding of Sleep Apnea in Video
Seong-Yoon Shin,Sang-Won Lee 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Vol.10 No.7
A person sleeps a third of his or her life, which means that a person sleeps seven or eight hours a day. However, many people suffer from disturbed sleep. In this paper, we try to segment a video into shots using the method of Bhattacharyya Distance. After analyzing these segmented shots, we decide a movement during sleep. We also try to record all the breath from the beginning of the sleep to the ending of the sleep. In the recorded voice, we extract a part of sleep apnea and a part of heavy panting. Sleep apnea is a phenomenon wherein breath stops from 30 seconds to 1 minute and 30 seconds while sleeping. This phenomenon has been known to kill a person from time to time. This sleep apnea causes abrupt heavy panting after no breathing over a period of time. We expect that our research will pave the road to efficiently and effectively judging sleep apnea without specific equipment.
Erythema Multiforme due to Diphenylcyclopropenone
Yoon, Tae Jin,Kim, Jong Kyeong,Lee, Ho Seong,Oh, Chee Won,Kim, Tae Heung 대한피부과학회 1996 Annals of Dermatology Vol.8 No.1
A 34-year-old man visited our hospital with alopecia areata on the occipital scalp, which began to develop two months prior to his visit. He was sensitized with 0.2% diphenylcyclopropenone(DPCP) in acetone that was applied to the inner side of his right arm. Two weeks after sensitization, we applied DPCP on his bald lesion once weekly for skin challenge. Following the third application of DPCP, polycyclic erythematous target-like lesions developed around the sensitized area. A clinical diagnosis of erythema multiforme was made. Histologically, the target-like lesion showed few eosinophilic dyskeratosis, exocytosis, and hydropic degeneration of basal layer in the epidermis, and mononuclear infiltration around superficial blood vessels in the dermis. We report herein a rare case of erythema multiforme following topical application of DPCP in the treatment of alopecia areata. This complication must be noted because of the widespread and frequent use of DPCP in dermatotherapeutic fields.
