Some Semantic Universals of Numeral Classifier Languages
Sang-Ryong Oh 한국중원언어학회 2008 언어학연구 Vol.- No.12
The study focuses on two semantic universals in numeral classifier languages in Southeast Asia. One is on the scope of general classifiers, and the other on typical semantic features of the numeral classifier system. With the corrections of previous studies, the semantic scope of the general classifier is not really unmarked than expected. With the sample of 16 typical numeral classifier languages, the study proposes what semantic features are more omnipresent than others.
Is Active Zone Universal? : A Comparative Analysis of English and Korean
Sang-Ryong Oh 한국중앙영어영문학회 2004 영어영문학연구 Vol.46 No.2
Lexical Semantics and Some Implications
Oh, Sang-Ryong 忠州大學校 2004 한국교통대학교 논문집 Vol.39 No.2
A Word Order of Numeral Classifier Languages
Sang-ryong Oh 한국중원언어학회 2014 언어학연구 Vol.0 No.30
Numeral classifiers are one of the classifier types, used with numerals in numeral noun phrases and expression of quantity. This study aims to investigate the word order of numeral classifier phrase (noun, numeral, and classifier) of 44 numeral classifier languages in the world. Firstly, as most scholars agree, it has been found that the numeral classifier system is an areal characteristic in Southeast and Oceania, i.e. 30 out of 44 languages. Secondly, unlike previous studies like Jones (1970), there is a preference of the word order of Num + Cl + N, i.e. 28 out of 44. Thirdly, it appears that there exists strong preference of Num + Cl + N in VO-type languages, i.e. 27 out of 29. Finally, an implicational universal is found in that if a language is V-initial and has numeral classifiers, then the word order would be Num + Cl + N, but not vice versa.
