        Comparison of a small volume of hypertonic saline solution and dextran40 on hemodynamic alternations in conscious calves

        The hemodynamic effects of rapid intravenous (IV) administration of 10% dextran 40 in saline solution (D40) and 7.2% hypertonic saline solution (HSS) in calves were compared. Calves received isotonic saline solution (ISS), HSS or D40 (3 calves/group) and were monitored of blood pressure, and cardiac output (CO) for 180 min. HSS and D40 infusions induced a significant increase in relative plasma volume reaching 134.9 ± 2.8 and 125.0 ± 1.9%, respectively at the end of fluid infusion. In the HSS group, CO, cardiac index (CI) and stroke volume (SV) remained constant at low levels after 90 minutes despite the maximal values of CO, CI and SV at the end of infusion, reaching 21.0 ± 6.3 l/min (p<0.05), 177.8 ± 14.2 ml/min/kg (p < 0.001) and 0.20 ± 0.03 l/beat (at t = 10 min, p < 0.001), respectively. In contrast, CI and SV in the D40 group showed significant increases to 14.7 ± 2.9 l/min and 153.5 ± 17.2 ml/min/kg, respectively, at the end of fluid infusion. And those values remained constant at higher levels than those of the before infusions values throughout the experimental periods. Positive effects for hemodynamic alternations of D40 in calf practice were milder and longer than those of HSS. Therefore, the D40 infusion should be explored as a possible treatment for dehydrated calves, since rapid infusion of D40 may be safe and more beneficial for rehydrating more than HSS treatment.

      • BEHAVIOR AND POSSIBILITY OF BIODEGRADATION OF PCDDs/PCDFs IN LANDFILL SITE

        A landfill experiment was conducted to clarify the leachability and possibility of biodegradation in a landfill site through leachate quality analysis using a large-scale lysimeter. This lysimeter had a cover soil layer consisting of “White-rot fungi” and a waste layer consisting of fly ash including high concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs), bottom ash, and the crushed residue of incombustibles. In this study we also investigated the fundamental properties of white-rot fungi (Ceriporia sp. MZ-340) in landfilled waste layers and the contaminated soil from the detection of cell bodies through genetic analysis and monitoring. From a study of leachate quality analysis of a large-scale landfill experiment carried out over 3 years, the amount of PCDDs/PCDFs moving into the leachate from the landfilled waste layer in the experimental lysimeter was only 1.15 X 10-4%. This means that most of the PCDDs/PCDFs remain in the waste layer. In the case of the elution of the leachate, PCDDs/PCDFs tend to be detected in insoluble materials,, such as suspended solids. Further more, in the third year of observation, almost none of the PCDDs/PCDFs were detected in the leachate. It can therefore be concluded that most of the PCDDs/PCDFs remained in landfill sites. It is therefore important to prevent PCDDs/PCDFs from leaching by focusing on counter measures for the removal of suspended solids in the initial stage of landfilling. Genetic analysis for the detection of white-rot fungi also showed that there is no organism capable of surviving the conditions of the waste landfill layer. As a result of a fundamental degradation experiment, that showed that the growth potential of white-rot fungi is high if suitable conditions have been met, and that the number of fungi reaches its maximum in a short period of time, even when combined with fly ash. It is essential to consider the setting conditions for bioremediation.

      • 매립지에서 PCDDs/PCDFs 의 생분해 가능성과 거동

        매립 실험은 대규모의 라이시미터를 이용하여 침출수의 수질 분석을 통하여 침출 가능성과 생분해 가능성을 해명하기 위해 수행되었다. 이 라이시미터는 “white-rot fungi”와 고농도의 PCDDs/PCDFs 를 포함한 비산재, 바닥재, 그리고 불연성의 분쇄 잔재물이 포함된 복토층을 가진다. 본 연구에서 우리는 유전학적 분석과 모니터링을 통하여 세포 조직체의 검출로부터 매립된 폐기물 층과 오염된 토양증에서 white-rot flungi(Ceriporiasp. MZ-340)의 기본 특성을 조사했다. 3 년여에 걸친 대규모의 매립지 실험의 침출수 수질 분석의 연구로부터 도출된 실험용 라이시미터에 매립된 폐기물 층으로부터 침출수로 이동한 PCDDs/PCDFs 의 양은 1.15”~10-4%.에 불과했다. 이것은 대부분의 PCDDs/PCDFs 가 폐기물층에 남아 있다는 것을 의미한다. 침출수의 용출의 경우, PCDDs/PCDFs 는 부유 고형물(SS)과 같은 불용성 물질에서 검출되는 경향이 있다. 게다가, 관찰 3 년째에는, 대부분의 PCDDs/PCDFs 가 침출수에서 검출되지 않았다. 따라서 대부분의 PCDDs/PCDFs 는 매립지에 남아 있다고 결론내릴 수 있다. 그러므로 매립 초기에 부유 고형물 제거를 위한 대안에 초점을 맞춤으로써 PCDDs/PCDFs 를 침출로부터 막는 것이 중요하다.       • Object Learning Through Interaction with Person in the Context of Finding Lost Objects

        This paper deals with machine learning through interaction with a person. We developed an interactive learning system (LTIP) by concentrating on a specific situation where a user and a robot cooperatively find a lost object in real world. The LTIP consists of a gathering candidate images process, a self-categorizing process based on SOM, and a cooperative and repeatable narrow down process so that the robotic system effectively learns the appearance of the target object that the user is looking for. We conducted several experiments to evaluate and analyze the process of interactive learning. We confirmed that preliminarily determining the effective features set for categorization is difficult. So our proposed LTIP scheme is useful for such a practical processes such as finding a lost object.

        Evaluation of changes in left ventricular myocardial function observed in canine myocardial dysfunction model using a two-dimensional tissue tracking technique

        This study was conducted to assess the ability of two-dimensional tissue tracking (2DTT) to evaluate changes in left ventricular (LV) myocardial function associated with sustained high electrical pacing. Pacemakers were implanted at the right ventricular (RV) apex of five female Beagles, and sustained high electrical pacing of 250 beats per minute (bpm) was performed for three consecutive weeks. Conventional echocardiography and 2DTT were performed at baseline, and at every week for three weeks with pacing. The baseline parameters were then compared to those of weeks 1, 2, and 3. Three weeks of pacing resulted in significant reduction of radial and circumferential global strains (p < 0.001). Regional analysis revealed reduction of segmental strains in both radial and circumferential directions, as well as increased dyssynchrony after three weeks of pacing in the radial direction (p = 0.0007). The results of this study revealed the ability of 2DTT to measure radial and circumferential strains in dogs with sustained high-electrical pacing, and allowed assessment of global and regional myocardial function and the degree of dyssynchrony.

        Localized Ce 4f Electronic States in a Au-Ga-Ce Quasicrystal Approximant Probed by Soft X-ray Absorption and Photoemission Spectroscopies

        We have performed Ce M4,5-edge X-ray absorption (XAS) and Ce 3d-4f resonance photoemission (RPES) spectroscopies on quasicrystal approximant Au59.2Ga25.7Ce15.1. The 3d94f1 final state originating from the itinerant 4f electronic states is negligible in the Ce M4,5-edge XAS. The Ce 3d-4f RPES spectrum shows the relatively large the spectral weight of the 4f0 final state to that of the 4f1 final state, reflecting the weak hybridization between the localized 4f orbitals and the conduction bands. The localized 4f electronic states in Au59.2Ga25.7Ce15.1 are revealed by both spectroscopies.
