<P>Several methods used for the multiresidue analysis of pesticides from the environment and drinking water have been reported. However, most of these reports dealt with a small number of targeted pesticides or some special groups. A method that is simple, faster, and more cost-effective than the environmental protection agency (EPA) method has been developed for the analysis of 82 frequently used pesticides in water samples obtained from Yeongsan and Sumjin rivers, as well as rice fields located in various locations around the two rivers. The samples were extracted by dichloromethane, and the pesticides were analyzed using a GC-electron capture detector (ECD), followed by confirmation with GC-MS. Recoveries were found to be between 82 and 120.1% for most of the tested pesticides, which were in agreement with the standard values dictated by the EPA. The method was potentially applied to 66 water samples for human consumption and 90 water samples from the rice fields and irrigation ditches that were collected from June to September 2007. Oxadiazon, butachlor, and alachlor were detected in some of the river water samples collected in June, iprobenfos (IBP) was detected in samples collected in August, and no pesticide was detected in September. On the other hand, chlorpyrifos-methyl, IBP, hexaconazole, diazinon, oxadiazon, butachlor, and isoprothiolane were detected at relatively high concentrations in 48 rice paddy field water samples collected between June and September 2007. Alachlor in one sample and procymidone in some of the rice paddy field water samples were also detected in trace amounts. The results were consistent with the temporal pattern of pesticide application in Korean rice fields.</P>

The ethanolic extract of Ficus racemosa Lin. (Moraceae) bark and fruit were tested for its possible antinociceptive activity study on acetic acid induced writhing method in mice. Both the bark and fruit extracts at a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight showed significant antinociceptive activity on the experimental animals. The fruit extract showed most potent inhibition of acetic acid induced writhing in mice (61.38%, P < 0.001) where as the bark extract showed inhibition only 42.6% (P < 0.001) and all the result were statistically significant.

Ethanolic extract of Aphanamixis polystachya bark was used to investigate its analgesic activity by acetic acid induced writhing in mice. The bark extract exhibited statistically significant and dose dependent analgesic activity in mice. The bark extract at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight showed 40.69% and 62.07% writhing inhibition respectively in mice whereas diclofenac-Na produced 75.17% writhing inhibition as a positive control.

The ethanolic extract of Fleurya interrupta Gaud, (Urticaceae) was tested for its possible neuropharmacological effects on experimental animals, For the primary neuropharmacological screening of this plant, the ethanolic extract of its aerial parts was subjected to preliminary evaluation for acute toxicity, antinociceptive activity and central nervous system (CNS) activities. At the doses of 125 and 250 mg/kg, the extract significantly (P < 0.01 and P < 0. 001) and dose-dependently increased the frequency of acetic acid induced writhing in mice. In the pentobarbitone induced sleeping time test, the extract at the above dose levels, significantly and dose-dependently decreased the pentobarbitone induced sleeping time (P < 0.001) and increased the time for onset of sleep (P < 0.001) in mice. In the open field and hole cross tests, test animals showed an increase in their movement in the both tests from the 2nd observation period (30 min) and persisted throughout the entire experimental period (240 min). These results of the extract may attribute a stimulating action on the CNS. On the basis of these findings, it can be assumed that the extract exerts its stimulating effect on the CNS in mice by interfering with the cortical function or increasing the effect of some CNS stimulating neurotransmitters.

The ethanolic extract of Jasminum sambac leaves were tested for its cytotoxicity and possible antinociceptive activity in experimental animals. The extract showed potent cytotoxic activity in brine shrimp lethality assay and the LC50 was found only 25 mg/ml. The extract significantly and dose dependently inhibited the acetic acid induced writhing in mice (56.83%, P < 0.001 and 43.17%, P < 0.001 for 500 and 250 mg/kg body weight, respectively). Animals need to be able to alter their developmental and behavioral programs in response to changing environmental conditions. This developmental and behavioral plasticity is mainly mediated by changes in gene expression. The knowledge of the mechanisms by which environmental signals are transduced and integrated to modulate changes in sensory gene expression is limited. Exposure to ascaroside pheromone has been reported to alter the expression of a subset of putative G protein-coupled chemosensory receptor genes in the ASI chemosensory neurons of C. elegans (Kim et al., 2009; Nolan et al., 2002; Peckol et al., 1999). Here we show that ascaroside pheromone reversibly represses expression of the str-3 chemoreceptor gene in the ASI neurons. Repression of str-3 expression can be initiated only at the L1 stage, but expression is restored upon removal of ascarosides at any developmental stage. Pheromone receptors including SRBC-64/66 and SRG-36/37 are required for str-3 repression. Moreover, pheromone-mediated str-3 repression is mediated by FLP-18 neuropeptide signaling via the NPR-1 neuropeptide receptor. These results suggest that environmental signals regulate chemosensory gene expression together with internal neuropeptide signals which, in turn, modulate behavior.
Bank Characteristics and Leverage in the Listed Banking Sector of Bangladesh

The study intended to determine the characteristics of banks which are total assets, return on assets, return on sales, age, board size, independent director, separation of CEO and its influence on leverage. To accomplish the objectives of this research 29 listed banks in Dhaka Stock Exchange were selected and the required data were collected from a period of four years covering 2013 to 2016.The results express that ROA is positively correlated with Leverage and ROS is negatively associated with Leverage of banks. The study covers only banking companies and it includes 8 variables, and hence there is a scope of further study covering additional variables such as local, foreign, and management ownership in ownership structure, audit committee, and management experience, and this can be applied in other types of companies. The findings may have contributions on regulatory agencies in Bangladesh such as Bangladesh Bank, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). The findings may additionally help to detect the factors that have impact on banking companies to maintain ideal amount of leverage in capital structure.
