      • On the Viability of Indigenous Methodologies: Implications for Southeast Asian Studies

        Rommel A. Curaming 부산외국어대학교 아세안연구원 2016 Suvannabhumi Vol.8 No.1

In this paper, I offer a reflection on two cases to assess in preliminary manner the viability of an indigenous methodology for Southeast Asian Studies. The first is Kaupapa Maori Research (hereafter KM) as spelt out in the much talked about book by Linda Tuhiwai Smith, Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous People (Smith 1999). The second case is Sikolohiyang Pilipino (Filipino Psychology, SP), which began to take shape in the late 1960’s and 1970’s in the Philippines. Arguably these are among the most developed efforts at decolonization or indigenization of methodology. I intend to use these cases to explore the factors that made possible the flourishing and stagnating of indigenous methodologies. I shall argue that the broader context of knowledge consumption, not epistemological and methodological concerns, poses the most formidable challenge to the viability of indigenization efforts.

      • Postcolonial Criticism and Southeast Asian Studies: Pitfalls, Retreat, and Unfulfilled Promises

        Rommel A. Curaming 부산외국어대학교 아세안연구원 2015 Suvannabhumi Vol.7 No.2

This paper reflects on the relationship between postcolonial criticism (PC) and Southeast Asian Studies. The emphasis is on the apparent premature retreat from PC as well as its unfulfilled promises and persistent pitfalls. I argue that it is premature to abandon PC because it remains relevant, even essential, in the context of the much ballyhooed age of “knowledge economy” or “information society.” There is a need to take another look at its promises and to work towards fulfilling them, but at the same time be conscious of its persistent problems.

From Southeast Asian Studies to ASEAN Studies: What’s in a Name Change?

        ( Rommel A. Curaming ) 부산외국어대학교 동남아지역원 2018 Suvannabhumi Vol.10 No.2

This paper is a preliminary attempt at making sense of the increasingly common use of the term ASEAN Studies as interchangeable with, or as replacement for the older and more established counterpart. It speculates on whether this development represents the beginning among local people of “owning” the region, as well as whether this forms part of the continuing effort to wrest the initiative or control of knowledge production in and about Southeast Asia.

Area Studies, History and the Anthropocene

        ( Rommel A. Curaming ) 부산외국어대학교 아세안연구원(구 부산외국어대학교 동남아지역원) 2020 Suvannabhumi Vol.12 No.2

The term Anthropocene encapsulates the idea that the human impact on earth has already reached the level of a geological force with catastrophic consequences, such as global warming or climate change. The envisioning of an apocalyptic future of the possible demise of the human race is central to this idea. This paper seeks to explore the implications of the Anthropocene on the very idea of history and area studies. Does the planetary scope of the Anthropocenic condition, and the concerted effort in the global scale in the need to address it, mean the end of area studies, which is premised on a particularity of an area? Is a posthumanist history feasible? If yes, how can it really help address the problem? Or, it will merely muddle the issues?

Growth and Characterization of CuIn₃Se5 Thin Film

        김창대(Chang-Dae Kim),John R. Tuttle(John R. Tuttle),Rommel Noufi(Rommel Noufi) 한국진공학회(ASCT) 1994 Applied Science and Convergence Technology Vol.3 No.2

The structural and optical properties of CuIn₃Se_5 thin films grown by co-evaporation have been investigated by XRD, SEM, transmission and reflectance measurements. It is confirmed from the XRD measurements that CuIn₃Se_5 crystallizes in a defect chalcopyrite structure with ordered Cu vacancies and an ordered exchange of Cu with In. The absorption characteristics support that the compound has a direct bandgap. The energy gap of CuIn₃Se_5 is found to be 1.27 eV at room temperature. The results of CuIn₃Se_5 thin films are discussed in comparison with those of CuIn₃Se₂ thin films.

      • Nanoscale Characterization of TiO2 Films Grown by Atomic Layer Deposition on RuO2 Electrodes

        Murakami, Katsuhisa,Rommel, Mathias,Hudec, Boris,Rosová,, Alica,Huš,eková,, Kristí,na,Dobroč,ka, Edmund,Rammula, Raul,Kasikov, Aarne,Han, Jeong Hwan,Lee, Woongkyu,Song, S American Chemical Society 2014 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.6 No.4

<P>Topography and leakage current maps of TiO2 films grown by atomic layer deposition on RuO2 electrodes using either a TiCl4 or a Ti(O-i-C3H7)4 precursor were characterized at nanoscale by conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM). For both films, the leakage current flows mainly through elevated grains and not along grain boundaries. The overall CAFM leakage current is larger and more localized for the TiCl4-based films (0.63 nm capacitance equivalent oxide thickness, CET) compared to the Ti(O-i-C3H7)4-based films (0.68 nm CET). Both films have a physical thickness of ∼20 nm. The nanoscale leakage currents are consistent with macroscopic leakage currents from capacitor structures and are correlated with grain characteristics observed by topography maps and transmission electron microscopy as well as with X-ray diffraction.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2014/aamick.2014.6.issue-4/am4049139/production/images/medium/am-2013-049139_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/am4049139'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

      • HCC : O-010 ; Predictors of viable tumor cells adhering to the electrode after radiofrequency ablation of malignant liver tumors

        ( Erwin Sarapuddin ),( Rommel Romano ),( Rolando Lopez ),( Stephen N. Wong ) 대한간학회 2012 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2012 No.1

Background: The presence of viable tumor cells adhering to the radiofrequency ablation (RFA) electrodes during its withdrawal is one possible mechanism for neoplastic seeding and local tumor recurrence. However, this has not been well studied in patients undergoing Cooltip RFA. Objectives: To determine the incidence, and tumor and procedure- related predictors of viable tissue adhering to the RFA electrode during RFA of malignant liver tumors. Methods: From June 2011-October 2011, consecutive patients who underwent RFA using Cooltip electrode for malignant liver tumors at two tertiary hospitals were included. After each RFA application, the electrode tip was examined and scraped and washed in saline. Visible tissue fragments adherent to the electrode were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and analyzed for viability. Specimens were classified as coagulation necrosis, possibly non viable tissue and possibly viable tissue. Results: Majority (90%) of the 10 patients had hepatocellular carcinoma. There were 20 tumors ablated with a mean size of 3.33+1.13, which needed 36 total RFA applications. Adherent tissue was seen in 9 (25%) applications while the rest showed blood only 12 (33.3%) and no adherent tissue 15 (41.7%). Of the 9 tissues examined, 6 (67%) showed possibly viable tissue while the rest (33%) showed coagulation necrosis only. The temperature at the end of RFA was the only significant predictor for the presence of adherent tissue (p=0.005). However, this did not correlate with viability (p 0.314). Conclusion: Viable tumor cells adherent to the RF electrodes was found in 16.7% of applications after RFA with no significant predictors of its incidence.
