      • Characterization of biological effect of 1763 MHz radiofrequency exposure on auditory hair cells.

        Huang, Tai-Qin,Lee, Min Su,Oh, Eun-Ha,Kalinec, Federico,Zhang, Byoung-Tak,Seo, Jeong-Sun,Park, Woong-Yang Taylor Francis 2008 International journal of radiation biology Vol.84 No.11

<P>PURPOSE: Radiofrequency (RF) exposure at the frequency of mobile phones has been reported not to induce cellular damage in in vitro and in vivo models. We chose HEI-OC1 immortalized mouse auditory hair cells to characterize the cellular response to 1763 MHz RF exposure, because auditory cells could be exposed to mobile phone frequencies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cells were exposed to 1763 MHz RF at a 20 W/kg specific absorption rate (SAR) in a code division multiple access (CDMA) exposure chamber for 24 and 48 h to check for changes in cell cycle, DNA damage, stress response, and gene expression. RESULTS: Neither of cell cycle changes nor DNA damage was detected in RF-exposed cells. The expression of heat shock proteins (HSP) and the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) did not change, either. We tried to identify any alteration in gene expression using microarrays. Using the Applied Biosystems 1700 full genome expression mouse microarray, we found that only 29 genes (0.09% of total genes examined) were changed by more than 1.5-fold on RF exposure. CONCLUSION: From these results, we could not find any evidence of the induction of cellular responses, including cell cycle distribution, DNA damage, stress response and gene expression, after 1763 MHz RF exposure at an SAR of 20 W/kg in HEI-OC1 auditory hair cells.</P>

Prediction of Exposure to 1763MHz Radiofrequency Radiation Using Support Vector Machine Algorithm in Jurkat Cell Model System

        Huang Tai-Qin,Lee Min-Su,Bae Young-Joo,Park Hyun-Seok,Park Woong-Yang,Seo Jeong-Sun Korea Genome Organization 2006 Genomics & informatics Vol.4 No.2

We have investigated biological responses to radiofrequency (RF) radiation in in vitro and in vivo models. By measuring the levels of heat shock proteins as well as the activation of mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs), we could not detect any differences upon RF exposure. In this study, we used more sensitive method to find the molecular responses to RF radiation. Jurkat, human T-Iymphocyte cells were exposed to 1763 MHz RF radiation at an average specific absorption rate (SAR) of 10 W/kg for one hour and harvested immediately (R0) or after five hours (R5). From the profiles of 30,000 genes, we selected 68 differentially expressed genes among sham (S), R0 and R5 groups using a random-variance F-test. Especially 45 annotated genes were related to metabolism, apoptosis or transcription regulation. Based on support vector machine (SVM) algorithm, we designed prediction model using 68 genes to discriminate three groups. Our prediction model could predict the target class of 19 among 20 examples exactly (95% accuracy). From these data, we could select the 68 biomarkers to predict the RF radiation exposure with high accuracy, which might need to be validated in in vivo models.

      • Perceptual Quality Driven Frame-Rate Selection (PQD-FRS) for High-Frame-Rate Video

        Huang, Qin,Jeong, Se Yoon,Yang, Shanglin,Zhang, Dichen,Hu, Sudeng,Kim, Hui Yong,Choi, Jin Soo,Kuo, C.-C. Jay IEEE 2016 IEEE transactions on broadcasting Vol.62 No.3

<P>Video of higher frame rates (HFR) reduces the visual artifact in large screen display at the cost of a higher coding bit rate (or transmission bandwidth). In this work, we propose a perceptual quality driven frame rate selection (PQD-FRS) method that assigns a time-varying frame rate to a sequence so as to reduce its transmission cost. The objective of the PQD-FRS method is to offer perceptually indistinguishable experience for a certain percentage of viewers. We first conduct a subjective test to characterize the relationship between human perceived quality and video contents, and build a frame-rate-dependent video quality assessment dataset to serve as the ground truth. Then, we use a machine learning approach for the design of the key module of the PQD-FRS method, called the 'satisfied user ratio (SUR) prediction.' The SUR prediction module predicts the percentage of satisfied viewers, who cannot differentiate video quality of a lower and HFR, using the support vector regression. It is confirmed by experimental results that the proposed SUR module can offer a so highly accurate prediction that the PQD-FRS system can dynamically assign a proper frame rate to video without any perceptual quality degradation for a majority of viewers.</P>

      • Understanding and Removal of False Contour in HEVC Compressed Images

Huang, Qin,Kim, Hui Yong,Tsai, Wen-Jiin,Jeong, Se Yoon,Choi, Jin Soo,Kuo, C.-C. Jay IEEE 2018 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS FOR VIDE Vol.28 No.2

<P>A contour-like artifact called false contour is often observed in large smooth areas of decoded images and video. Without loss of generality, we focus on detection and removal of false contours resulting from the state-of-the-art High Efficiency Video Coding codec. First, we identify the cause of false contours by explaining the human perceptual experiences on them with specific experiments. Next, we propose a precise pixel-based false contour detection method based on the evolution of a false contour candidate (FCC) map. The number of points in the FCC map becomes fewer by imposing more constraints step by step. Special attention is paid to separating false contours from real contours such as edges and textures in the video source. Then, a decontour method is designed to remove false contours in the exact contour position while preserving edge/texture details. Extensive experimental results are provided to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed false contour detection and removal method in both compressed images and videos.</P>

Enhancement of the antioxidant and hypolipidemic activities of Puerariae radix by fermentation with Aspergillus niger

        Qin Huang,Hao Zhang,Dan Xue 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.4

Puerariae radix (PR) is a traditional Chinesefood and medicine. In this study, the chemical profile andbioactivities of PR fermented with Aspergillus niger (PFA)were investigated. Based on HPLC analysis, PFA chemicalprofile changed and total phenols increased by 12.5% relativeto PR. Consequently, the in vitro antioxidant activitysignificantly improved. According to the blood lipid analysisin mice, PFA showed a better ability to inhibit theincreased blood lipid levels induced by Triton WR-1339than PR. In a quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) study,PFA up-regulated cholesterol 7-alpha hydroxylase(CYP7A1) and low-density lipoprotein receptor mRNAexpression, which were 50% and 44.8% higher than thelevels induced by high-dose PR. Conversely, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCoAR) mRNAexpression was down-regulated to 46.8% lower than thelevels induced by high-dose PR. The qRT-PCR resultssuggested that PFA displayed better hypolipidemic activitythan PR, due to its superior ability to regulate mRNAexpression.

Enhanced plasma mineralization of adsorbed toluene by optimization the hybrid support of Ag–Mn catalysts

        Caihong Qin,Wenwen Bai,Pin Liu,Jiayu Huang,Hui Guo,Xuemin Huang,Xiaoqing Dang,Dongjie Yan 한국공업화학회 2019 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.80 No.-

The removal of toluene using a cycling adsorption and plasma mineralization process was investigated ina packed reactor. The supports of catalysts were optimized in regards to mineralization rate (MR), CO2selectivity (SCO2), and the production of by-products. The hybrid support g-Al2O3-HY showed a muchbetter MR in comparison to that of HY alone. Using hybrid HY-g-Al2O3 as supports, loading Ag–Mn ononly HY or g-Al2O3 had a better MR than loading Ag–Mn on both HY and g-Al2O3. The stability studyshowed that intermediates accumulated on the surface of the catalyst lead to its deterioration.

Flexural Behavior of Anchor Horizontal Boundary Element in Steel Plate Shear Wall

        Ying Qin,JinYu Lu,Li-Cheng-Xi Huang,Shi Cao 한국강구조학회 2017 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.17 No.3

Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have been increasingly used in lateral load resisting system since the post-buckling strength of web plates was realized and considered in practical design. Diagonal tension field is formed in the web plate to resist the lateral force induced by winds and earthquakes. The force is anchored by the surrounded horizontal boundary elements (HBEs) and vertical boundary elements (VBEs) and eventually transferred to the ground. Therefore, the response of HBEs, especially anchor HBEs, is essential to ensure that SPSWs could exhibit the required strength, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity. This paper presents the results of theoretical studies into the flexural behavior of the anchor HBEs of SPSWs and can be regarded as an extension to the previous work by Qu and Bruneau (2011) and Qin et al. (2017). The boundary effect was considered to reflect the actual stress state at the HBE-to-VBE connection, which assembled the method by Qin et al. (2017). Furthermore, more proper distributions of the vertical component of tension field for the positive and negative flexure cases, respectively, were proposed comparing to the work by Qu and Bruneau (2011). The hand calculation approach for the plastic flexural capacity of the anchor HBEs was given by the summation of the contributions from the flanges and the web. The developed equations are compared with previous data and good agreement was found between them. Meanwhile, comprehensively discussions are conducted to evaluate the influence of key parameters on the flexural behavior of anchor HBE. It was found that the plastic flexural capacity of anchor HBE decreases from unity to the minimum as a result of the increase in shear force, axial force and vertical stresses. Moreover, the flexural response of anchor HBE is most vulnerable to the change in shear force. This indicates that boundary effect is significantly important and cannot be ignored in the analysis. The research in this paper provides basis for the capacity design of anchor HBE.

Protective Effects of Gypenosides against Fatty Liver Disease Induced by High Fat and Cholesterol Diet and Alcohol in Rats

        Renan Qin,Hong Nie,Jianyu Zhang,Chuyuan Li,Xiaoqi Zhang,Aihua Xiong,Feng Huang,Zhen Yin,Kongyan Li,Wenyu Qin,Mingzhen Chen,Shubing Zhang,Lingyi Liang,Huiye Zhang,Wencai Ye 대한약학회 2012 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.35 No.7

In the present study, the protective effects of gypenosides from Gynostemma pentaphyllum on fatty liver disease (FLD) were examined in rats treated with high fat and cholesterol diet and alcohol. Male SD rats were divided into seven groups: control, model, lovastatin, silymarin, gypenosides high-, medium- and low-treatment groups. The latter 6 groups were fed high-fat and cholesterol diet and administered alcohol intragastricly once a day. Body weight was measured every week for 10 weeks, and the hepatic index was measured after 10 weeks. Compared with model group, levels of serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), free fatty acid (FFA), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level, malondialdehyde (MDA), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity, and hepatocyte apoptosis were significantly decreased in gypenosides groups; while serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in both serum and hepatic tissue and mRNA and protein level of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPAR-α) were significantly increased. Moreover, hepatic steatosis and mitochondrial damage were improved. These results suggested that gypenosides could prevent liver fatty degeneration in fatty liver disease through modulating lipid metabolism, ameliorating liver dysfunction and reducing oxidative stress.
