        A Review on Venom Enzymes Neutralizing Ability of Secondary Metabolites from Medicinal Plants

        Objectives: Medicinal plants are vital sources of bioactive compounds that are useful for the treatment of patients with snake bites or are indirectly applicable for boosting the effects of conventional serum therapy. These plants are being used traditionally by local healers and tribes for the treatment of patients with snake bites and therefore can be used as an alternative against snake envenomation. Scientifically, using the secondary metabolites of plants to neutralize venom enzymes has an extra benefit of being based on traditional knowledge; also, the use of such metabolites for the treatment of patients with snake bites is cheaper and the treatment can be started sooner. Methods: All the available information on various secondary metabolites exhibiting venom neutralizing ability were collected via electronic search (using Google books, Pubmed, SciFinder, Scirus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) and articles of peer-reviewed journals. Results:Recent interest in different plant has focused on isolating and identifying of different phytoconstituents that exhibit Phospholipase A2 activity and other venom enzyme neutralizing ability. In this support convincing evidence in experimental animal models are available. Conclusion: Secondary metabolites are naturally present, have no side effect, are stable for a long time, can be easily stored, and can neutralize a wide range of snake enzymes, such as phospholipase A2, hyaluronidase, protease, L-amino acid oxidase, 5'nucleotidase, etc. The current review presents a compilation of important plant secondary metabolites that are effective against snake venom due to enzyme neutralization.

      • Progress in hybrid greenhouse solar dryer (HGSD): A review

        The world population reaches to about 7.7 billion in 2018 from 6.2 billion in 2000. This much growth in population results in increased energy demand and increased food supply. As the conventional energy sources are limited. These may deplete soon if consumed at this rate. So, the world is switching towards the utilization of non-conventional sources of energy. Energy from sun is the best method as it can not only solve the energy issue but also helps in meeting food demand by conserving it. Greenhouses are made for the purpose of food conservation. Various types of solar dryers are developed by researchers till now and still the effort is being putted to make them more efficient. Hybrid greenhouse is also effort toward utilization of solar energy in more efficient way. The paper presents the heat and mass transfer analysis of hybrid greenhouse solar dryer developed by different researchers till now. The review helps the researcher in understanding the heat and mass transfer taking place inside the hybrid greenhouse and how it can be further improved.

      • Effects of carbamate pesticides intermediates on Escherichia coli membrane architecture: An in vitro and in silico approach

        Methyl isocyanate (MIC), a low molecular weight synthetic aliphatic compound, having an isocyanate group (−NCO), has industrial application. In this study, the effects of methyl isocyanate and its mechanism on outer membrane protein of Escherichia coli were observed using experimental and computational methods. In vitro exposure of N-succinimidyl N-methylcarbamate (NSNM) a synthetic analogue of MIC on E. coli to a final concentration of 2 mM was found to affect the growth curve pattern and changes in cell morphology. Molecular docking studies of MIC and NSNM with E. coli outer membrane protein (OmpW, OmpX, OmpF OmpA), and periplasmic domain (PAL) were performed. The in-silico results revealed that outer membrane protein OmpF showed the highest negative binding energy, i.e. ΔG -4.11 kcal/mole and ΔG -3.19 kcal/mole by NSNM and MIC as compared to other proteins. Our study concludes that methyl isocyanate retains lethal toxicity which leads to cell death due to the membrane protein damage of E. coli membrane.

        The double burden of malnutrition among adults in India: evidence from the National Family Health Survey-4 (2015-16)

        OBJECTIVES: India still faces the burden of undernutrition and communicable diseases, and the prevalence of overweight/obesity is steadily increasing. The discourse regarding the dual burden of underweight and overweight/obesity has not yet been widely explored in both men and women. The present study assessed the determinants of underweight and overweight/obesity in India among adult men and women aged 15-49. METHODS: Population-based cross-sectional and nationally representative data from the National Family Health Survey-4 (2015-16), consisting of a sample of men and women, were analyzed. Stratified 2-stage sampling was used in the NFHS-4 study protocol. In the present study, bivariate and adjusted multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the correlates of underweight and overweight/obesity. RESULTS: The results suggested a persistently high prevalence of underweight coexisting with an increased prevalence of overweight/obesity in India. The risk of underweight was highest in the central and western regions and was also relatively high among those who used either smoking or smokeless tobacco. Overweight/obesity was more prevalent in urban areas, in the southern region, and among adults aged 35-49. Furthermore, level of education and wealth index were positively associated with overweight/obesity. More educated and wealthier adults were less likely to be underweight. CONCLUSIONS: In India, underweight has been prevalent, and the prevalence of overweight/obesity is increasing rapidly, particularly among men. The dual burden of underweight and overweight/obesity is alarming and needs to be considered; public health measures to address this situation must also be adopted through policy initiatives.

        Comparative analysis of VMT genes/proteins in selected plant species with emphasis on bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

        Background In recent years, the study of molecular basis of uptake, transport and utilization of grain Fe/Zn (GFe/GZn) in wheat has been an active area of research. As a result, it has been shown that a number of transporters are involved in uptake and transport of Fe. In a recent study, knockout of a transporter gene OsVMT (VACUOLAR MUGINEIC ACID TRANSPORTER) in rice was shown to be involved in Fe homoeostasis. Objective In this study, we analysed VMT genes among six monocots and three dicots with major emphasis on wheat VMT genes (TaVMTs), taking OsVMT gene as a reference. Methods and results Using OsVMT gene as a reference, VMT genes were identified and sequence similarities were examined among six monocots and three dicots. Each VMT protein carried one functional domain and 7 to 10 distinct motifs (including 9 novel motifs). The qRT-PCR analysis showed differential expression by all the six TaVMT genes in pairs of contrasting wheat genotypes with high (FAR4 and WB02) and low (K8027 and HD3226) GFe/GZn at two different grain filling stages (14 DAA and 28 DAA). TaVMT1 genes showed up-regulation in high GFe/Zn genotypes relative to low GFe/Zn genotypes, whereas the TaVMT2 genes showed down-regulation or nonsignificant up-regulation in a few cases. Conclusions At 14 DAA, each of the six TaVMT genes exhibited higher expression in wheat genotypes with high GFe and GZn relative to those with low GFe and GZn, suggesting major role of VMT genes in improvement of grain Fe/Zn homoeostasis, thus making TaVMT genes useful for improvement in Fe/Zn in wheat grains.
