Understanding the gene flow from genetically modified (GM) crops to conventional crops is important to prevent and mitigate seed contamination caused by pollen-mediated gene flow. We conducted a field test to investigate the gene flow from diamondback moth resistant GM cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) containing cry1Ac1 gene, to a non-GM control line AD126. GM and non-GM cabbage plants were cultivated in the field and pollinated using Bombus terrestris under the nets during the flowering periods. After seeds were collected from non-GM plants, hybrids between them and the GM cabbages were screened by multiplex PCR targeting cry1Ac1 gene. Out of 878 germinated seedlings, 168 hybrids were found and the average gene flow frequency was 19.7%. Because cabbage is mainly pollinated by insect pollinators, large-scale field tests are needed to study gene flow of GM cabbage.

Chemotherapy is a method to treat cancer by destroying cancer cells, and the effectiveness of agents on various types of cancer cells has been confirmed experimentally and clinically. Chemotherapeutic agents cause a range of side effects, mainly affecting the fast-dividing cells of the body. In this study, we explored the alleviative effects of Saengshik on the side effects of chemotherapeutic agents, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin, after single or multiple-dose administration of the agents in mice. The results showed that Saengshik had effects against decreasing spleen weight as well as reductions of RBCs, WBCs, and platelets counts. We also observed the effects of Saengshik administration against the hepatotoxicity caused by 5-FU and cisplatin, where the preventive effects of Saengshik administration on glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) levels were observed. Furthermore, survival time extension was observed after Saengshik administration, where the survival rate was prolonged up to 90% in both the Saengshik plus 5-FU administered group and the Saengshik plus cisplatin administered group. In conclusion, Saengshik proved to have alleviative effects on the side-effects of anti-cancer agents. Ti 과잉 Ti-Ni-Cu 합금박막의 상변태거동 및 형상기억특성

Thin films of 55Ti-(45-x)Ni-xCu(x = 0, 5, 10, 20 at.%) compositions were fabricated by d.c. magnetron sputtering method. Deposited films were annealed at 973 K for 3.6 ks to induce crystallization. The phase transformation behaviors of these thin films were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Shape memory characteristics were studied by thermal cycling test under a constant load. As-sputtered films contained a mixture of amorphous and very fine(=15 ㎚) Ti₂Ni phase. Crystallization temperature(Tc) decreases from 774 K to 747 K with increasing Cu-content from 0 at.% to 20 at.%. Two-stage transformation behavior, i.e., the B2→R→B19', was observed in a 55Ti-45Ni(at.%) alloy thin film. The B2→B19' transformation occurred in a 55Ti-40Ni-5Cu(at.%) alloy film, while the B2→B19 transformation occurred in 55Ti-35Ni-l0Cu(at.%) and 55Ti-30Ni-20Cu(at.%) alloy films. The stress dependence of transformation temperature(dT/dσ) of 55Ti-40Ni-5Cu(at.%) and 55Ti-35Ni-10Cu(at.%) thin films were 0.015 K/㎫ and 0.016 K/㎫, respectively. They were very small as compared to those of 50Ti-45Ni-5Cu(at.%) and 50Ti-40Ni-10Cu(at.%) alloys.
