Lavandula vera is indispensable member of the herb family, used for perfumes and potpourri. Androgens have profound effects on the physiology of the sebaceous gland. Sebum is secreted due to the effect of androgen, which starts to be secreted at puberty. Using the human sebocyte cell line SZ95, the author investigated the inhibitory effect of Lavandula vera on the lipid production. Light microscopic finding were examined numerous cytoplasmic lipid droplets SZ95 cells by Oil red staining and lipid droplets were increased markedly by testosterone. On the other hand, combined treatment with Lavandula vera and testosterone resulted in a lower lipid droplets than with testosterone alone in a dose-dependent manner. These findings indicate that Lavandula vera acts antagonistically to testosterone and inhibits the lipid synthesis of SZ95 cells at the cellular level.

The purpose of this study was to understand the level of depression of children suffering from cancer. The depression was compared with a group of children that were hospitalized due to other disorders and another group of school children that were healthy. The subjects of this study were 30 children who were diagnosed with cancer and were being treated at St. Mary's Hospital. This group of children were compared with a control group of 40 children who were hospitalized in the same hospital for non-cancer diseases and another control group of 200 children with a healthy status. Level of children depression in each group was measured with CDI and was compared to each other groups using ANOVA and Duncan test. To examine the relationship between depression and other variables. correlation coefficients were tested and stepwise multiple regression was used to point out the main cause which had effects on the level of depression. Cronbach's a of CDI in this study was 0.91. The results u·ere as follows: 1. Children with cancer had a depression score of 44.5 which was lower than the control group of healthy school children which scored 49.0 and higher than the non-cancer hospitalized children group scoring 44.2 (F=3.38. P=0.036). 2. Depression level of children with cancer were shown higher as the self-esteem level was lower(r=-0.60, p=0.001). Also, suffice understanding between the children's mother resulted in a lower level of depression(r=-0.57, p=0.001). Level of depression proved a positive correlation with the level of anxiety((r=0.56, p=0.002). 3. The major variables influencing the depression of children with cancer were anxiety which had an explanation of 27.1%, followed by the education level of the children's father 9.3% and the understanding level with the children's mother 8.0% which build up 54.5% of the total account for depression. For the children hospitalized for non-cancerous diseases, the anxiety of the children took 37.5%, self-esteem level 18.2%, age of the children's mother 10.2% adding up a total of 65.9% of the total explanation. For healthy school children, self esteem level 35.6%, anxiety of the children 11.7%, understanding level between the children's father 11.7% built up a 49.4% account for their depression level. Such results show that to reduce the depression level of children suffering from cancer the anxiety level of the subjects should be brought down and at the same time a high level of self-esteem should be maintained. Furthermore, a demand for a nursing system which helps to promote more understanding between the children and children's parents is needed in hand.
필기체 숫자인식의 최적 신경망 구조 설계를 위한 개선된 유전자 알고리즘

본 논문에서는 필기체 숫자인식의 최적 신경망 구조 설계를 위하여 유전자 알고리즘과 역전파 알고리즘을 병합하는 방법을 이용하였으며, 유전자 알고리즘은 유전인자의 역할에 따라 독립적으로 적응하는 개선된 선택, 교배, 돌연변이 연산자를 제안하였다. 실험결과는 유전인자의 역할에 적응하는 개선된 연산자들의 실행으로 최적의 신경망 구조를 설계하였고, 설계된 신경망 구조에서의 학습이 가장 좋은 성능을 나타내었다. In this study, the method of using both genetic algorithm and back propagation is proposed to design the structure of optimal neural network recognizing handwritten digits. Improved selection, crossover and mutation operator which can control the genetic algorithm independently according to the role of gene are used in the proposed method. Simulation result shows that the neural network of this method can search effectively the optimal hidden node numbers, connection weight, learning rate and the momentum because of above proposed operators.

Whole soybean milk is a functional soymilk produced by mixing of soymilk and Bejee (soymilk residue) slurry. Application of enzymatic technology for disintegrating the coarse and fibrous materials in soymilk residue, and development of biomill reactor for reducing reaciton time make possible to produce new soymilk in domestic industry. Whole soybean milk is environmental affiliated product without discharging any waste such as Bejee ets. Whole soybeen milk has good taste and flavour without coarse mouthfeel induced by including Bejee particle, as well as contains more dietary fiber, protein, oligosaccharide, and other functional compounds than general soymilks. Important values of whole soybean are utilizing all nutritional properites from whole soybean without dicarding any of the insoluble solid. In this study, producing technologies and nutritional properties of whold soybean milk were investigated.

Purpose: To investigate the level of life satisfaction and burden for primary caregivers of patients with dementia in day care centers and in their homes. Method: From August to September 2003, 56 caregivers of patients with dementia in day care centers and 54 caregivers in their homes were surveyed through three questionnaires: Life Satisfaction Index-Z and Korean Dementia Caregiver Burden. Result: Life satisfaction of caregivers in day care centers was significantly higher than that of caregivers in their homes(p<.005). Also, the sense of burden of caregivers in day care centers was significantly lower than that of caregivers in their homes(p<.005). Caregivers in day care centers showed significantly lower levels in four subdimensions of burden than those of caregivers in their homes. The level of life satisfaction of caregivers in day care centers and in their homes were also negatively correlated with the sense of burden(p<.005, p<.005). Conclusion: Using day care centers for patients with dementia will be a good way to take care of them because their primary caregivers can have more rest time and less burden. Therefore, using day care centers for patients with dementia should be recommended and the number of the facility should be increased nationwide.

A mycelial chitin deacetylase has been purified from a chitin deacetylase-hyperproducing fungus, Absidiα coerulea CHK-1. The purified enzyme had a molecular mass of about 62 kDa on denaturated and natural conditions. The pI was 5.5. The chitin deacetylase, when resolved by SDS-PAGE, was positive for Schiff staining, suggesting that the enzyme is a glycoprotein. When O-hydroxylated chitin (glycolchitin) was used as a substrate, the enzyme displayed a temperature optimum of around 50℃ and a pH optimum of around PH 5,5. The enzyme was stable to incubation from pH 3.0 to pH 6.5 at 4℃ for 24 hr. The presence of chitin protected the enzyme from heat inactivation, the extent depending upon the substrate concentration. The activity of the enzyme was stimulated by Mn2+ ion. The enzyme is active on chitooligosaccharides with more than two N-acetylglucosamine residues (M-acetylchitobiose). However, the enzyme is not active on N-acetylglucosamine. The enzyme had an apparent Km of 12.4 mM and Kcat of 32.4 /sec for glycol chitin, respectively.

PVA hydrogels were prepared by drying, swelling, electron beam irradiation and heating. Electron beam and heat treatment processes were carried out to increase heat resistance of PVA hydrogels in boiling water. The physical properties such as gel content, degree of swelling and gel strength for the synthesized hydrogels were examined. The structure variations were investigated using the following techniques : IR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC).
