        Cognitive Behaviour Therapy And Relaxation Technique on Examination Anxiety among Senior Secondary School Students in the Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria

        Examination anxiety is as old as examination itself, as long as examination exist, anxiety is bound to occur. Many students often feel anxious and exhibits lots of negative emotions towards examinations. These feelings of anxiety exhibited by the students generally has deleterious effects on the students and also on their academics and personality. This study therefore examined the use of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Relaxation technique on examination anxiety among Senior Secondary School students in the Ibadan metropolis. The moderating effects of emotional intelligence and academic self-efficacy were also examined. A pretest-posttest control group quasi- experimental design with a 3x2x2 factorial matrix was adopted. Multi-stage sampling procedure was employed. Three local government areas were randomly selected from Ibadan metropolis. One public secondary school were randomly selected from each of the local government area. Ninety (M=37; F= 53) Senior Secondary School students SS 1 and 2 were screened for the test anxiety and were randomly assigned to the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (30) Relaxation Technique(30) and control group(30). Treatment lasted for eight weeks for the CBT and Relaxation Technique groups. Data were analysed using Analysis of Covariance and Multiple Classification Analysis at the 0.05 level of significance. The results indicated that there was significant main effect of treatments on examination anxiety of secondary school students. There was also significant main effect of emotional intelligence and academic self-efficacy on examination anxiety of secondary school students. Both CBT and relaxation technique were effective in managing examination anxiety among secondary school students. Counsellors and educational Psychologists should utilise these therapies to manage examination anxiety among students.

The world is moving from the traditional face-to-face classroom teaching to a virtual classroom. There are concerns however; that this paradigm shift is limited by the understanding on what quality/standard is needed for a good e-learning resource. This concern has prompted the need to compare e-learning experiences in United States, South Africa and Nigeria so as to encourage developing countries to improve on this innovative approach to learning.

        Tannins in Foods: Nutritional Implications and Processing Effects of Hydrothermal Techniques on Underutilized Hard-to-Cook Legume Seeds-A Review

        Tannins, water-soluble phenolic compounds, have been reported to have the ability to form complexes with nutritionally important nutrients such as protein and mineral elements thereby making them unavailable for absorption and utilization. Toxicity of tannin has been demonstrated in experimental animals although no deleterious effect of ingestion of legume tannin on human physiology has been reported. This report highlights the processing effects of soaking and hydrothermal techniques on some underutilised hard-to-cook legume crops and the importance of tannin in legume nutrition. Soaking and hydrothermal processing reduce the tannin content of processed legume seeds and hence improve the availability of protein and mineral elements. In view of the recent findings of the health benefits, classification of tannin which is traditionally regarded as an antinutrient should be reconsidered. Provision of these information will enhance knowledge of legume nutrition and economic utility. Increasing consumption of underutilized nutritionally important legume seeds, it is hoped, will alleviate the problem of protein energy malnutrition in many developing nations.

        Chronic Opisthorchis viverrini Infection and Associated Hepatobiliary Disease Is Associated with Iron Loaded M2-like Macrophages

        Chronic Opisthorchis viverrini-induced hepatobiliary disease is associated with significant leukocyte infiltration, including activated macrophages; however, the polarization of infiltrating macrophages remains to be fully characterized. In this study, we characterized macrophage polarization and phenotype in chronic O. viverrini-induced hepatobiliary disease in humans and hamsters using gene expression and histochemical analysis. Chronic O. viverrini infection and associated hepatobiliary diseases were associated with iron loaded M2-like macrophages in both humans and hamsters. This study provides suggestive evidence that iron loaded M2-like macrophages promote hepatobiliary disease in chronic O. viverrini infection.

        Comparison of Reading Speed after Bilateral Bifocal and Trifocal Intraocular Lens Implantation

        Purpose: : To evaluate and compare visual acuity and reading speed for Korean language between a diffractive bifocal and trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) of the same material and haptic design. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of the patients who had undergone bilateral cataract surgery with bifocal IOLs (AT LISA 801) on the both eyes (bifocal group) and trifocal IOLs (AT LISA tri 839 MP, trifocal group). The main outcome measures were the uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity (uncorrected distance visual acuity [UCDVA], uncorrected intermediate visual acuity [UCIVA], and uncorrected near visual acuity [UCNVA]) and corrected distance, near, and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (corrected distance visual acuity [CDVA], corrected near visual acuity [CNVA], and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity [DCIVA]) at last postoperative follow-up month. Reading speeds for Korean language were measured to check near visual function. Results: Fourteen eyes (7 patients) were included in the bifocal group and 32 eyes of 16 patients in the trifocal group. There were no statistical differences between the two groups with respect to UCDVA, UCNVA, CDVA, and CNVA. However, UCIVA (0.35 vs. 0.22 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR], p < 0.01) and DCIVA (0.34 vs. 0.20 logMAR, p < 0.01) were significantly better in the trifocal group than in the bifocal group. The mean reading speed for logMAR 0.5 optotype (point 10) was 86.50 words per minute (wpm) in the bifocal group and 81.48 wpm in the trifocal group without a significant difference (p = 0.70). Conclusions: Trifocal IOLs provided the same level of distance and near visual acuity and reading speed as that of bifocal IOLs with better intermediate visual acuity

        Diversity Assessment of Drought Tolerant Exotic and Adapted Maize (Zea mays L.) Inbred Lines with Microsatellite Markers

        Knowledge about the genetic diversity within a germplasm allows for a more effective and efficient use of resources for crop improvement programs. Diversity assessment of 48 tropical drought-tolerant maize inbreds, 24 each from CIMMYT and IITA, was carried out with microsatellite markers to determine the genetic divergence between the two groups of maize inbred lines. Eighty-one polymorphic SSR markers were used for the assessment. Results showed that the average number of alleles per locus was 3.7. The mean polymorphic information content (PIC) was 0.51 whereas the average modified Roger’s genetic distance (MRD) was 0.49. The mean genetic distance estimates between the CIMMYT and IITA lines were higher than the mean genetic distance among IITA lines or among CIMMYT lines. The average linkage cluster analysis separated the lines into two broad groups along institutional lines. The observed sub-groups within each main group were reflections of the relationships of the lines based on pedigree records. The FST value of 19.5% reflects a high level of genetic differentiation between the two groups of lines. The results highlighted the presence of appreciable genetic divergence between CIMMYT and IITA lines that can be exploited for superior hybrid maize development.

        Metaphoric Conceptualizations of Death in Gikuyu

        Using the dictum that metaphor is a conceptual mapping from a concrete source domain to an abstract target domain, this paper identifies and categorizes the metaphors of death in Gikuyu using the Conceptual Metaphor Theory. To achieve this objective, a purposive sample of twenty speakers of Gikuyu was interviewed. The study collected 47 metaphors of death as the target domain. Having employed the mnemonics “TARGET DOMAIN IS SOURCE DOMAIN” as posited by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), the study identified four conceptual metaphors of death in Gikuyu as follows: DEATH IS A JOURNEY; DEATH IS THE END; DEATH IS A REST; and DEATH IS A SUMMON. The study concludes that the Cognitive linguistics model provides tools for understanding, interpreting and accounting for metaphors of death in Gikuyu.

        Investigations on aerosols transport over micro- and macro-scale settings of West Africa

        The aerosol content dynamics in a virtual system were investigated. The outcome was extended to monitor the mean concentration diffusion of aerosols in a predefined macro and micro scale. The data set used were wind data set from the automatic weather station; satellite data set from Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer aerosol index and multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer; ground data set from Aerosol robotic network. The maximum speed of the macro scale (West Africa) was less than 4.4 m/s. This low speed enables the pollutants to acquire maximum range of about 15 km. The heterogeneous nature of aerosols layer in the West African atmosphere creates strange transport pattern caused by multiple refractivity. It is believed that the multiple refractive concepts inhibit aerosol optical depth data retrieval. It was also discovered that the build-up of the purported strange transport pattern with time has enormous potential to influence higher degrees of climatic change in the long term. Even when the African Easterly Jet drives the aerosols layer at about 10 m/s, the interacting layers of aerosols are compelled to mitigate its speed to about 4.2 m/s (macro scale level) and boost its speed to 30 m/s on the micro scale level. Mean concentration diffusion of aerosols was higher in the micro scale than the macro scale level. The minimum aerosol content dynamics for non-decaying, logarithmic decay and exponential decay particulates dispersion is given as 4, 1.4 and 0 respectively.

        Foreign Capital Inflows and Manufacturing Sector Output in Nigeria

        The study investigated the effects of foreign capital inflows on manufacturing sector output in Nigeria. Time series data were used for the study and they were sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletins 2018 and World Bank Indicators which spanned between 1986 to 2017. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the study employed the Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to establish the long-run relationship between the relevant time series data. The unit root test employed suggested that, all the variables were found to be either I(0) or I(1) levels of stationary. The Lag length criterion was one, the bound test was conducted which revealed an existence of long run relationship among the variables. The study found that a unit rise in foreign direct investment and foreign portfolio investment increases manufacturing output by 29% and 15%, credit to manufacturing sector signed positive but insignificant to manufacturing output in Nigeria. Development assistance and external debt have an inverse relationship with manufacturing output in the long-run model. External debt has a significant negative effect on manufacturing output while development assistance signed positive but insignificant on the manufacturing sector output in the short run. Therefore, the study recommended among others a proactive step to expand market capitalization which is the major driver of foreign portfolio investment and formulate policies to attract foreign capital inflow to improve manufacturing output in Nigeria.
