Nocturia is the Lower Urinary Tract Symptom With Greatest Impact on Quality of Life of Men From a Community Setting

Eduardo de Paula Miranda,Cristiano Mendes Gomes,Fábio César Miranda Torricelli,José de Bessa Júnior,José Everton de Castro,Bruno Roberto da Silva Ferreira,Ariel Gustavo Scafuri,Homero Bruschini,Miguel 대한배뇨장애요실금학회 2014 International Neurourology Journal Vol.18 No.2

Purpose: Lower urinary tract symptoms are numerous, but the specific impact of each of these symptoms on the quality of life (QoL) has not been evaluated in community-dwelling men. An assessment of these symptoms and their effects on QoL was the focus of this study. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study with 373 men aged >50 years from a community setting. Patients completed the International Prostate Symptom Score questionnaire, which includes questions on each of the specific urinary symptoms and a question addressing health-related QoL that are graded from 0 to 5. We used the Pearson correlation test to assess the impact of each symptom on QoL. Results: Nocturia (58.9%) was the most prevalent urinary symptom. The mean score was 0.9±1.4 for incomplete emptying, 1.0±1.5 for frequency, 0.9±1.3 for intermittency, 0.8±1.3 for urgency, 1.0±1.5 for weak stream, 0.5±1.0 for straining, and 2.0±1.6 for nocturia. Nocturia and frequency were the only symptoms associated with poorer QoL, with nocturia showing a stronger association. Conclusions: Nocturia affects 50% of community dwelling men aged >50 years, and is the lower urinary tract symptom with the greatest negative impact on QoL.

      • The Photocycle and Proton Translocation Pathway in a Cyanobacterial Ion-Pumping Rhodopsin

        Miranda, M.R.M.,Choi, A.R.,Shi, L.,Bezerra, A.G.,Jung, K.H.,Brown, L.S. Biophysical Society ; Published for the Biophysica 2009 Biophysical journal Vol.96 No.4

The genome of thylakoidless cyanobacterium Gloeobacter violaceus encodes a fast-cycling rhodopsin capable of light-driven proton transport. We characterize the dark state, the photocycle, and the proton translocation pathway of GR spectroscopically. The dark state of GR contains predominantly all-trans-retinal and, similar to proteorhodopsin, does not show the light/dark adaptation. We found an unusually strong coupling between the conformation of the retinal and the site of Glu132, the homolog of Asp96 of BR. Although the photocycle of GR is similar to that of proteorhodopsin in general, it differs in accumulating two intermediates typical for BR, the L-like and the N-like states. The latter state has a deprotonated cytoplasmic proton donor and is spectrally distinct from the strongly red-shifted N intermediate known for proteorhodopsin. The proton uptake precedes the release and occurs during the transition to the O intermediate. The proton translocation pathway of GR is similar to those of other proton-pumping rhodopsins, involving homologs of BR Schiff base proton acceptor and donor Asp85 and Asp96 (Asp121 and Glu132). We assigned a pair of FTIR bands (positive at 1749 cm-1 and negative at 1734 cm-1) to the protonation and deprotonation, respectively, of these carboxylic acids.

Charlotte’s Web: Reproduction and Subversion of American 1950s Gender Ideology

Vol.22 No.3

This essay analyses ambivalent perspectives on E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. The book shows how one human girl character and an anthropomorphised animal character conform to heteronormative behavioural expectations of women, particularly in Charlotte’s taking care of a male piglet who is about to be culled. Such a literary representation closely corresponded to the gender ideology of the United States for middle-class white women in the 1950s. White seems to prepare the little girl Fern to live up to the 1950s’ standards of becoming a caring mother. Spider Charlotte seemingly has the same function within the narrative, showing girl readers what Fern’s life is likely to develop into. At the same time, however, the narrative presents an alternative subversive message with its liminal characters. On a deeper level and with a focus on morality according to ethics-of-care theories, we cannot but notice how minor characters are deployed to oppose the restricting societal norms and values in terms of gender and social class. The insight and success of those deviant characters tell a different tale of exclusion and how to empower oneself. With the main character Charlotte who faithfully follows the societal expectation and the few minor animal characters who open up the subversive potentials, White succeeds in epitomizing the marginalised in society as well as the mainstream ideal of America through the successful portrayal of fantasy-reality mixture. By focusing the dialectic aspects of the novel, I will try to explain the ways in which White has encouraged the child reader to look beyond the obvious and create a space for oneself in a heteronormative world.

Factors influencing decision-making around opportunistic salpingectomy: a nationwide survey

        Miranda P. Steenbeek,Laura A.M. van Lieshout,Johanna W.M. Aarts,Jurgen M.J. Piek,Sjors F.P.J. Coppus,Leon FAG Massuger,Rosella P.M.G. Hermens,Joanne A. de Hullu 2019 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.30 No.1

Objective: To explore current practice and influencing factors on adoption of the opportunistic salpingectomy (OS), particularly regarding the decision making, to eventually enhance the development and implementation of clear guidelines. Methods: This nationwide cross-sectional survey study was conducted in all hospitals in the Netherlands. An anonymous online survey was sent to gynecologists with special interest in gynecological oncology, gynecological endoscopy or urogynecology and all Dutch gynecology trainees. The survey mainly focused on current practice regarding OS and identification of influencing factors on the level of innovation, organization, healthcare professional and individual patient. Results: The response rate was 348 out of 597 gynecologists (58.3%) and 142 out of 340 trainees (41.8%). Current practice of discussing and performing the OS varied widely, with ovarian cancer (OC) risk reduction as most important supportive factor on innovation level. Supportive factors on the level of organization and healthcare provider were; working in a non-training hospital, knowledge of current literature and extensive work experience (in years and annual number of hysterectomies). On individual patient level, a vaginal approach of hysterectomy, negative family history for OC and the presence of firm adhesions were suppressive factors for the OS. Conclusion: In this study we evaluated the current practice regarding the opportunistic salpingectomy in the Netherlands and identified influencing factors on different levels to raise awareness and attribute to development of a targeted implementation strategy, on both national and international level.

Genetic Reassortment of Rice stripe virus RNA Segments Detected by RT-PCR Restriction Enzyme Analysis-based Method

2011 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.27 No.2

Our previous sequence and phylogenetic analyses of the Korean Rice stripe virus (RSV) suggested possible genetic reassortment of RNA segments, but whether this RNA variation contributed to the recent RSV outbreaks in Korea is yet unclear. To further clarify these RSVRNA segment variations, we developed a reverse transcription-polymerase reaction/restriction enzyme (RTPCR/RE) analysis-based method. We identified five REs, including DraI, EcoR1, NdeI/AseI, and SpeI, that could differentiate RSV RNA 1–4 subtypes, respectively. Our RT-PCR/RE results provided a clear pattern of RNA reassortment, i.e., different groups of isolates having their RNA segments derived from two to three different RSV ancestors, such as from Eastern and Southwestern Chinese or Japanese M and T isolates. We also found that the migratory small brown planthopper from Eastern China caught by aerial net traps that possesses RSVRNA3genotypes corresponds mainly to Eastern China, with a few for Southwestern China based on RT-PCR/RE, sequence and phylogenetic analyses, indicating that RSV populations in Eastern China may also have strong RNA variation. The development of an RE analysisbased method proved a useful epidemiological tool for rapid genotyping and identification of mixed infections by RSV strain and by different subtype.

21 Vol.8 No.6

This study conducts in-depth interview to analyze the adaptation process and strategies of Spanish migrant women to Korea, a sub-group of a migrant population from western countries that has often been excluded from migration debate in Korea. The results confirm the role of Spanish migrant women as strategic actors who try to pursue a better life through migration. They also experience conflicts in adapting to Korean society, however, these are related to social problems inherent in the Korean society. Accepting migrants as members of Korean society and cooperating together to solve shared social problems would become a realistic alternative to achieve a true multiculturalism in Korean society.

Complete Genome Sequence of the RNAs 3 and 4 Segments of Rice stripe virus Isolates in Korea and their Phylogenetic Relationships with Japan and China Isolates

2009 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.25 No.2

The complete genome sequences of RNA3 and RNA4 of the 13 different Rice stripe virus (RSV) isolates were determined and characterized in this study to address the possible causes of the recent re-emergence of RSV that affected many rice fields in Korea. The genome size of each RNA segment varied among isolates and significant differences were observed in the intergenic region. There was up to 4% average divergence in the RNA4 nucleotide sequence among 13 Korean isolates and only 1.4% in the RNA3. Phylogenetic relationships among different Korean isolates revealed that there were at least 2 types of RNA3 and 4 distinct types of RNA4 genomes present in Korea. However, Korean isolates with one type of RNA3 predominate over the other while the occurrences of the RSV Korean isolates with the 4 types of RNA4 genome were not correlated to specific geographical areas. Results further indicate that RNA4 had diverged more than RNA3 and these differences in accumulation of mutations in the individual RNA segments indicate that genetic reassortment were likely to contribute to the genetic divergence in the 13 Korean isolates. All of the Korean-RNA3 sequences except for one isolate grouped with Chinese isolates (JY and Z). In contrast, the RNA 4 sequences segregated together with either Chinese (JY and Z) and Japanese (M and T) isolates but genetic relationships of Korean isolates- RNAs 3 and 4 segments to Chinese-Y isolate were low. Altogether, these results suggest that the occurrence of mixtures of RNAs 3 and 4 genotypes in the natural population of RSV may have contributed to the sudden outbreak in Korea.
