        Dynamics of Yeast-like Symbiote and its Relationship with the Virulence of Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal, to Resistant Rice Varieties

        Abundance of the yeast-like symbiote (YLS) in brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens Stl, collected from rice fields in China and obtained from International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), was monitored. The role of YLS in nymph survival rate, development and adult reproduction, and activities of transaminases in BPH on different resistant rice varieties were examined. Also, the relationship between YLS and virulence shifts of BPH to resistant rice varieties was discussed. The results indicated that the virulence of BPH populations to resistant rice varieties was strongly related to the abundance of YLS in 5th instar nymphs and brachypterous females of BPH field populations at Nanning in South China and Hangzhou in East China, showing the more abundance of YLS in BPH, the higher virulence of BPH to resistant rice varieties, while no obvious differences in YLS abundance were monitored between three BPH biotypes. Numbers of YLS reduced significantly in female adult of BPH biotype 1 fed on resistant rice varieties IR26, Mudgo and ASD7, compared with that fed on susceptible rice variety TN1. The lowest YLS abundance of BPH from field population was found in 2nd generation successively fed on resistant varieties, and the number of YLS was resumed at 4th generation when the BPH has adapted the resistant varieties. The markedly lower nymphal survival rate, adult fecundity and activities of alanine and aspartic transminase, and significantly longer nymph duration in the three aposymbiotic biotypes than in the symbiotic ones were recorded on both susceptible and resistant rice varieties. However, the much greater differences between aposymbiotic and symbiotic BPH were found on the inadaptable resistant rice varieties than that on the fitness resistant rice varieties. Those results implied that YLS in BPH should play a crucial role in the virulent shift of BPH populations to resistant rice varieties.

        Optical Properties of Zinc-oxide Films Determined Using Spectroscopic Ellipsometry with Various Dispersion Models

        In this work, we have studied the optical properties of wurtizite zinc-oxide films grown on silicon (100) substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Spectroscopic ellipsometry and three dispersion models, namely, the Sellmeier, Cauchy, and Forouhi-Bloomer models, were applied for determining the optical constants of the ZnO thin films. A comparison was made between two samples that were deposited for 30 minutes (sample I) and 60 minutes (sample II), respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that there are two types of preferred-orientation, i.e., (101) and (100) orientations for sample I and II, respectively. Results show that the Cauchy model gives the best fit for the samples with least root mean square error (RMSE) whereas the Forouhi-Bloomer model is most suitable for the data analysis in both the transparent and the absorption regions. The optical properties extracted from different dispersion models have been compared with the data reported in the literature.         Structure and Properties of Polyimide (BTDA-TDI/MDI co-polyimide) Fibers Obtained by Wet-Spinning

        BTDA-TDI/MDI (P84, synthesized by the condensation of 2,4-diisocyanato-1-methylbenzene and 1,1' -methylenebis(4-isocyanatobenzene) with 5,5'-carbonylbis(l,3-isobenzofurandione)) co-polyimide fibers were prepared by wet-spinning. The basic spinning conditions were found from the studies of dope viscosity, ternary phase diagrams, coagulation value, and precipitation value. The effect of the coagulation bath composition on the morphology of as-spun fibers was investigated and a theoretical approach was used to understand the coagulation phenomena. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the cross-sectional shape of the fiber deviated more from an ellipse shape with the increasement of N-methyl-2-pyrrdidinone (NMP) content. The surface and cross section morphology of the as-spun fibers was also analyzed by the rate of diffusion and phase separation. The as-spun fibers were treated in heating tubes without drawing at different temperatures. The gravimetric analysis spectra showed that the BTDA-TDI/MDI co-polyimide fibers, which had been heat treated at 350 and 400 ℃, possessed better thermal properties than the as-spun fibers, a large weight loss was observed only above 550 ℃. Heat treatment of the fibers resulted in relatively high tensile strength and modulus. The fibers spun in Bath C (70/30, NMP/water, wt/wt)and Bath D (80/20, NMP/water, wt/wt) showed better thermal properties and higher tensile strength.

        Synthesis and characterization of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers for enrichment of sanguinarine from the extraction wastewater of M. cordata

        A novel and efficient pretreatment method is proposed for the enrichment of sanguinarine (SA) from the extraction wastewater of Macleaya cordata (Willd) R. Br. using magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) as solid phase adsorbent. The obtained MMIPs were synthesized by molecular imprinted technology and were well characterized with TEM, FT-IR, XRD, TGA, and VSM. The adsorption capacity and selectivity of MMIPs were also investigated. The results showed that the obtained MMIPs were core–shell spherical morphologies with an average diameter of 300 nm. The adsorption experiments showed that the MMIPs exhibited an almost three times higher adsorption capacity towards SA (Qmax = 12.24 mg/g) than magnetic molecularly non-imprinted polymers (MNIPs) (Qmax = 4.15 mg/g). The calculated parameters of adsorption isotherms and kinetics suggested that the adsorption process matched the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The thermodynamic parameters were calculated, indicating that the adsorption process was spontaneous (ΔG298K = −3.24 kJ/mol). The selectivity experiment showed that the MMIPs displayed higher selective adsorption capacity for SA compared to its reference compounds. Moreover, the MMIPs were applied to enrich SA from the extraction wastewater of M. cordata. The proposed method could provide an effective, simple and environmentally friendly way to identify and enrich SA from the extraction wastewater of M. cordata.

        Privet golden leaves adapt unexpectedly well to light changes

        Golden-leaf privet ( Ligustrum × vicaryi ) is widely used as a horticultural shrub because of its upper golden leaves, butits lower leaves are green. However, the putative mechanisms of its upper golden leaves and the leaf color changes inresponse to light shifts have not been well studied so far. Here, chlorophylls (Chl), carotenoids, and Chl precursors from bothgolden and green leaves grown in full sunlight (approximately 1200 μmol photons m −2 s −1 at noon) or low-light conditions(180 μmol m −2 s −1 ) were determined spectrophotometrically. In addition, their gas exchange parameters and Chl fl uorescencewere measured in situ. Metabolic fl ux analysis of chlorophyll intermediates indicated that the conversion of prochlorophyllideto chlorophyllide was signifi cantly blocked in golden leaves when compared with green leaves. Green leaves showed higherphotosynthetic capacity in low light than golden leaves, but golden leaves presented unexpectedly stronger photosyntheticcapacity and lower reactive oxygen species accumulation under the high-light condition. Furthermore, golden leaves showeda higher level of nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) after the light-to-dark shift and presented a stronger adaptive abilityto a broad range of light environments. Higher NPQ values and less oxidative damage in golden leaves may be correlatedwith their higher carotenoid levels. The results imply that lower chlorophyll levels and higher carotenoid levels in canopyleaves may help privet plants acclimate better to illumination changes. This study demonstrates the key role of irradiance ingenerating the two types of Ligustrum × vicaryi leaves and sheds a light on cultivation of other ornamental foliage plants.

        Multiobjective Optimization of Three-Stage Spur Gear Reduction Units Using Interactive Physical Programming

        The preliminary design optimization of multi-stage spur gear reduction units has been a subject of considerable interest. since many high-performance power transmission applications (e.g.. automotive and aerospace) require high-performance gear reduction units. There are multiple objectives in the optimal design of multi-stage spur gear reduction unit. such as minimizing the volume and maximizing the surface fatigue life. It is reasonable to formulate the design of spur gear reduction unit as a multi-objective optimization problem. and find an appropriate approach to solve it. In this paper an interactive physical programming approach is developed to place physical programming into an interactive framework in a natural way. Class functions. which are used to represent the designer's preferences on design objectives, are fixed during the interactive physical programming procedure. After a Pareto solution is generated, a preference offset is added into the class function of each objective based on whether the designer would like to improve this objective or sacrifice the objective so as to improve other objectives. The preference offsets are adjusted during the interactive physical programming procedure. and an optimal solution that satisfies the designer's preferences is supposed to be obtained by the end of the procedure. An optimization problem of three-stage spur gear reduction unit is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

        Optimization of algal lipid extraction by mixture of ethyl acetate and ethanol via response surface methodology for biodiesel production

        The effects of extraction time, extraction temperature, solvent to biomass ratio and solvent composition on lipid yield from lyophilized Chlorococcum sp. biomass using a mixture of ethyl acetate and ethanol (EAE), a new proposed solvent, were studied. Subsequently, the process conditions of extraction by EAE were optimized using Box- Behnken design (BBD). The results revealed that the extraction temperature had the greatest effect on lipid extraction efficiency, followed by volume ratio of ethyl acetate to ethanol (EA/E) and extraction time. The largest lipid extraction yield of 15.74% was obtained under the following extraction conditions: 40mL solvents per gram of biomass for 270 min with gentle stirring at 80 oC by EAE with an EA/E of 1.0. Furthermore, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid were the most abundant fatty acids in the lipids extracted, indicating the great potential of the proposed lipid extraction procedure for microalgae-based biodiesel production.

        Active learning strategy-based reliability assessment on the wear of spur gears

        This study introduces the active learning strategy and Kriging model into the reliability assessment of spur gear wear. First, the wear model of spur gears is constructed based on Archard’s model, and its wear life is approximately estimated. Next, the uncertainty factors affecting the wear life are analyzed and quantified, which causes the reliability problem of spur gear wear. Then, the active learning Kriging model is introduced to estimate the wear reliability for highly efficient and highly accurate computation. Finally, the result analysis for a spur gear is provided, and the relevant results reveal the evolutionary law of spur gear wear depth with working pressure angle. Meanwhile, the wear reliability of spur gears is estimated by different learning functions for comparative analysis, and it is eventually estimated as approximately 99.45 %, which guides decision makers in engineering practice. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation is adopted to validate the accuracy of the estimated wear reliability of spur gears.
