Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption by affecting osteoclastic function and formation of osteoclasts from their precursor cells. Chondroclasts have the same origin and differentiation as osteoclasts. Thus, it is hypothesized that bisphosphonate can affect on cartilage metabolism. This study was aimed to elucidate effects of alendronate, a nitrogen containing bisphosphonate, on cartilage development in the tibial proximal and femoral distal epiphyseal plates in rats. Alendronate (1 mg/kg) was subcutaneously administered in growing rat pups for 10 days. Several parameters such as the number and size of chondroclasts, involved in cartilage resorption, size of secondary ossification center and thickness of cartilage cell layers were measured and analysed by histomorphometry. The size of the secondary ossification centers in the tibial proximal and femoral distal epiphysis was smaller in the alendronate treated group (p<0.01). The number of osteoclasts in the both the ossification centers and chondroclasts beneath the epiphyseal plates was significantly decreased byalendronate treatment (p<0.01). The size of chondroclasts was not significantly changed (p>0.05). The thickness of proliferating cartilage layer was not changed, but by contrast, hypertrophied cartilage layer was increased in thickness by alendronate treatment. These findings suggest that bisphosphonates can affect cartilage cell metabolism in a chondroprotective way.
Enhanced conductance properties of UV laser/RTA annealed Al-doped ZnO thin films

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Thin films comprising 0.5mol% aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) were prepared on glass substrates by a spin-coating method for transparent conducting oxide (TCO) applications. UV laser was selected for the annealing of AZO thin films, due to the well matched energy bandgap between UV laser and AZO films. After the rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process, post UV laser annealing was carried out by varying the scan speed of the laser beam, and the effects of laser annealing on the structural, morphological, electrical, and optical properties were analyzed. The results indicated that UV laser annealing based on various scan speeds affects the microstructure, sheet resistance, and optical transmittance of the AZO thin films, compared with those of the only RTA processed thin films. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that all films that preferentially grew normally on the substrate had a (<I>002</I>) peak. The optical transmittance spectra of the laser/RTA annealed AZO thin films exhibited greater than 83% transmittance in the visible region. Also, the sheet resistance (1.61kΩ/sq) indicated that optimized UV laser annealing after the RTA process improves film conductance.</P>

To improve passenger safety, seatbelt systems with pre-tensioner that tightens seatbelt webbing using explosive just before collision are widely used these days. Even though seatbelt must not unlatched without passenger's operation, explosive power of pre-tensioner can cause unlocking of a buckle. To prevent the unlocking, an Anti-g mass that blocks displacement of the release button has been attached to the buckle. In this study, the dynamics and statics of locking mechanism associated with operation of Anti-g buckle has been theoretically investigated, and important design variables that affect the operation of Anti-g buckle have been identified. Through the total seatbelt system's dynamic simulation using force and displacement inputs obtained from seatbelt sled test, design of the proposed Anti-g buckle has been validated.

N/A We studied the prevalence of anti-HCV in 585 sera from various individuals using enzyme immunoassay (EIA, Abbott Laboraties, USA). The results were as follows: 1) Anti-HCV was detected in 16 (10.7%) out of 150 HBsAg positive liver diseases diagnosed by liver biopsy, consisting of none out of 10 acute viral hepatitis, 3 out of 15 chronic persistent hepatitis, 4 out of 50 chronic active hepatitis, 2 out of 32 liver cirrhosis, and 7 out of 43 hepatocellular carcinoma. 2) Anti-HCV was detected in 43 (45.3%) out of 95 HBsAg negative liver diseases diagnosed by liver biopsy, consisting of 5 out of 8 acute viral hepatitis, 2 out of 10 chronic persistent hepatitis, 17 out of 30 chronic active hepatitis, 4 out of 15 liver cirrhosis, and 15 out of 32 hepatocellular carcinoma. 3) Anti-HCV was detected in 22 (38.6%) out of 57 hemodialysis patients, in 3 (6.7%) out of 45 Kidney transplants, in 2 (11.1%) out of 18 fatty liver diagnosed by liver biopsy, in 2 (1.3%) out of 150 healthy blood donors, and none out of 40 healthy volunteers, 4) Anti-HCV was detected in 6 (31.6%) out of 19 rheumatoid arthritis and 6 (54.5%) out of 11 systemic lupus erythematosis. 5) There were familial clusters of chronic liver diseases in 4.7% of the patients with HRsAg negative/ anti-HCV positive chronic liver diseases and in 19.4% of the patients with HBsAg positive/anti-HCV negative liver diseases. 6) The incidence of anti-HCV within HBsAg positive liver diseases was higher in HBsAg negative patients (17.6%) than in HBeAg positive patients (10.3%). 7) In the hemodialysis patients, the number of hemodialysis was significantly higher in anti-HCV positive patients than in anti-HCV negative patients (p<0.009), but the number of blood transfusions didn't indicate a difference between anti-HCV positive and negative patients. We concluded that 1) HCV might be an important cause of various types of HBsAg negative liver diseases, 2) intrafamilial transmission of HCV might be much less common than of HBV, 3) coinfections of both HCV and HBV might be relatively common, 4) long duration of hemodialysis might be related to the increment of incidence of anti-HCV in hemodialysis units, and 5) the high frequency of false-positive anti-HCV in autoimmune disorders without evidence of liver diseases might limit the use of the current anti-HCV tests.
Suppression of Multidrug resistance via Inhibition of Heat Shock Factor by Quercetin in MDR Cells

MDR1 promoter has been shown to contain heat shock elements (HSE), and it has been reported that FM3A/M and P388/M MDR cells show a constitutively activated heat shock factor (HSF), suggesting that HSF might be an important target for reversing the multidrug resistance. Therefore, it was examined whether quercetin, which has been shown to interfere with the formation of the complex between HSE and HSF, and to downregulate the level of HSF1, can sensitize MDR cells against anticancer drugs by inhibition of HSF DNA-binding activity. In this study, quercetin appeared to inhibit the constitutive HSF DNA-binding activity and the sodium arsenite-induced HSF DNA-binding activity in the MDR cells. The basal and sodium arsenite-induced MDRCAT activities were remarkably suppressed by the treatment of quercetin. These results were well consistent with the finding that the treatment of quercetin decreased the expression level of P-gp, MDR1 gene product, in dosedependent manner, and markedly increased the sensitivity of MDR cells to vincristine or vinblastine. These results suggest that quercetin can decrease the expression of P-gp via inhibition of HSF DNA-binding activity, and might be useful as a chemosensitizer in MDR cells.

We investigated and analysed the actual conditions and characteristics of railroad noise levels for 17 sites in the vicinity of the Seoul-Pusan Line. The results are summarized. as follows : 1) Railroad noise level ranged to 64∼74 L_eq dB(A) at day time and ranged to 60∼72 L_eq dB(A) at night time. 2) Increased night noise level depend on the increase of trains passing at night time. 3) The major factor of increased noise level in the vicinity of stations are using loudspeakers and stream whistle on trains. 4) Decreased effect of noise according to distance is able to be described quantitatively using regression equations of multiplicative model. L_eq=78.59 X^-0.056 n=25, r=-0.994, s.e.=1.007 P_av =105.68X^-0073, n =25, r =-0.997, s.e. = 1.007 Also increased and decreased effect of noise according to floor in apartment is able to be described quantitatively using regression equations of multiplicative model. L_eq = 64.238 X^0.0567, n = 39, r = 0.787, s. e. = 1.004 P_av. = 79.963 X^0.0254 n = 39, r = 0.689, s. e. = 1.056 5) Average noise level in high floor is over 70L_eq dB(A) at day and night time, so more detailed soundproofing countermeasured in high floors apartment is required.
