Vol.50 No.-
In 1975, Kumsung Publishing released Selected Works of 100 Modern Korean Painters & Sculptors―a series consisting of 100 complete volumes and 20 supplementary special- feature volumes―as the first anthology of pictorial monographs on Korean artists. The series was planned and edited by photographer Moon Sun-ho. The anthology’s unprecedented aim― to select one hundred representative Korean artists and illuminate their artistic worlds through individually dedicated monographs―immediately drew substantial attention within the art world, leading to the publication of an additional twenty special-feature volumes in 1979. At the time, Selected Works of 100 Modern Korean Painters & Sculptors played a pivotal role in expanding the domestic art-viewing public. Today, it is recognized as a fundamental and indispensable resource for the study of early- and mid-twentieth-century modern and contemporary Korean art. Despite its considerable influence, the anthology has yet to receive comprehensive scholarly attention within the field of art history. As indicated by the terms “modern” and “representative” in its Korean title, the anthology offers valuable insight into which works were regarded by the art world of the period as exemplifying contemporaneity, technical excellence, and desirable artistic value, and which artists were thereby positioned as mainstream figures. This alone establishes the series as a significant contribution to the study of Korean modern and contemporary art history. Nevertheless, before examining the artists and works included in the anthology, this study first considers its identity as a publication intended for the general readership. Prior to its treatment as an art-historical source, it functioned primarily as a commercially produced book aimed at Korean audiences. The 1960s and 1970s in Korea witnessed significant expansion in the publishing industry, driven by the widespread production of comprehensive educational and cultural book series. This development was also shaped by the cultural policies of the Park Chung-hee administration, which promoted reading habits as part of national governance. By situating Selected Works of 100 Modern Korean Painters & Sculptors within this historical context, this study demonstrates that the series occupied a pioneering role in the process through which modern and contemporary Korean art emerged as a field of popular cultural knowledge, facilitated by everyday reading practices. Ultimately, it argues that the publication of the anthology marked a decisive moment in the evolving relationship between modern and contemporary Korean art and the publishing industry.
Vol.48 No.-
This study examines the history of Hyundai Hwarang(Gallery Hyundai), Korea’s first fully commercial art gallery, from its opening in the 1970s to the 1990s. The research focuses on the 1970s–1990s, a period during which the exhibition and collection activities of Korea’s major national art institution, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), were most closely intertwined with those of Hyundai Hwarang. The study investigates how Hyundai Hwarang’s unique business strategies influenced the development of Korean art history, through analyzing its relationships with art institutions, artists, the media, and the public. From the 1970s onwards, Korea faced a unique situation where both state institutions and the market were required to collaborate in institutionalizing modern art. In this context, Hyundai Hwarang played a significant role in situating key examples of Korean modern art, within the framework of Korean art history under capitalism - by introducing works from various genres and generations of artists to the public as marketable products. In other words, Hyundai Hwarang accurately identified contemporary consumer preferences and assigned market value to art. Based on those preferences of the public, it introduced a modern structure to the Korean art world, aligning artists into the categories of emerging, mid-career, established, and senior. Additionally, by promoting both Eastern and Western-style paintings created by multiple generations of artists, regardless of genre, Hyundai Hwarang breathed new life into numerous artworks that were at risk of being forgotten in Korean art history. This was especially significant in a time when critics often prioritized only the new and avant-garde. Hyundai Hwarang took the lead in popularizing Korean art to the masses by publishing the quarterly magazine Hwarang in the 1970s and 1980s. It encouraged a predominantly female audience of collectors to express their artistic interests through consumer behavior, thereby influencing the direction of Korea’s art world. This moment marked the point when Korean society’s general public became both consumers of art and active producers of its history. For the first time in Korean modern art history under a capitalist system, art began to form a relationship with the public on an economic basis. Therefore, Hyundai Hwarang’s dual role as an art market institution and a contributor to media and publishing, as well as its efforts to historicize both established and avant-garde art, calls for a reassessment of its art historical value from a new perspective.

SUNG Neung Kyung(b. 1944-) is a renowned conceptual artist who led the experimental art movement in South Korea. His artwork uses nontraditional methods such as newspaper, photography, and performance. In 1973, he appeared in the art scene as a member of ST, a avant-garde art group. Until the late 1980s, he showcased newspaper-related installation art and performance which challenged government censorship of media and press’s power to edit. He was also one of the first artists to use photography in fine art in the 1970s. He began with photographs that explored tautology as a concept. He then presented photography installation art which took pictures of the newspaper itself or used his personal life as motif. Sung is also well known as a pioneer of Korean performance art starting in the mid-1970s, which then was referred to as “events.” From his earlier self-referential events to his post-1990s artwork which express the complex nature of life in a distinct manner, the world of his performance art has not only been colorful but also extremely unique. Sung, who has been dedicated to creative production for the last fifty years, has produced artwork essential to understanding the trajectory of South Korean art history—including avant-garde, experimental art, modernism, art for art’s sake, realism, and postmodernism. Sung’s approach to art has not been properly evaluated, however, in mainstream Korean art history or even within 1960-70 experimental art itself. This essay seeks to study Sung’s oeuvre, periodize and characterize his work, understand the relationship between different periods, and locate its place in Korean art history. As a minority conceptual artist, Sung has remained in the periphery of Korean art scene. This project then aims to understand the concept of his artistic expression. This research finds that Sung, as a conceptual artist, always distanced himself from the mainstream and reified the attitude of the minority. What he sought as conceptual art was anti-modernism, which stood outside of the inside of Korean modernism. His artwork, which 227 crossed newspaper, photography, and performance, and aimed for realism, rejected the purity and medium-specificity of modernism and challenged norms of Minjung art. Furthermore, his photo installations from the 1980s onward or his performance from the late 1980s onward, by definition, lacked marketability. Such works remained in the peripheries of art, outside of the institutions of art. This research considers the non-mainstream character of Sung’s conceptual art as fundamental to his approach to art, and as an opening for a new interpretation of post-1970s South Korean art history. When locating Sung within modernism, much fruitful and varied discussion emerges on conceptual art within Korean modernism, that is, experimental art outside of genre boundaries. When placing Sung within realism, historical avant-garde’s precedence on purity meets that of Minjung art to expand the horizon of purism in Korean art history. Sung’s conceptual art, which offers a minority’s alternative view, allows a reconsideration of Korean art beyond the dichotomies of modernism and realism, modernism and postmodernism, and center and periphery.

Published in 1990 by Kumsung Publishing, The Collection of Modern Korean Paintings remains a foundational resource for the study of modern Korean art. Comprising 27 volumes—13 on Korean painting, 13 on oil painting, and one supplementary volume—the collection includes 1,350 works by 68 artists. It is widely regarded as a major contribution that extends beyond mere documentation by offering substantive discussions of artists, seals and signatures, sketches, and detailed artist chronologies. The Collection of Modern Korean Paintings distinguishes itself from earlier anthologies of modern and contemporary Korean art, which predominantly emphasized oil painting, by presenting Korean painting and oil painting in equal proportion. This balanced approach reflects the curatorial philosophy of Lee Gu-yeol, the standing editor responsible for the project, whose research shaped both the structure and scope of the series. Lee’s editorial direction is further evident in this decision to include An Jung-sik in Volume 1 (Korean Painting), which recognized An Jung-sik as a foundational figure in the emergence of modern Korean painting and contributed to a renewed scholarly understanding of his work. Notably, artists such as Lee Eung-no—excluded from anthologies of the 1970s due to North Korea- related incident in 1977—were reintroduced in this collection. This editorial intervention reflected a deliberate effort to reassess previously marginalized figures, a perspective later expanded in the separate volume Artists Who Went to North Korea, published after the 1988 lifting of the prohibition on North Korean artists. The collection also sought to uncover and preserve lesser-known works by major artists, such as Ko Hui-dong’s Self Portrait(1915) and Kim Kwan-ho’s Dusk(1916), held at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, as well as a representative work from the Two-Person Painting Collection(1938) by Oh Ji-ho and Kim Joo-kyung, now lost. Kim Hee-dae, a modern art specialist and co-editor of the volume, later curated the exhibition series Eye on Modernity at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in the late 1990s, a project that further consolidated the historiography of modern Korean art. Consequently, The Collection of Modern Korean Paintings may be regarded as both a scholarly archive and a precursor to later institutional narratives in modern Korean art history.

Until recently, not much was known about Lee Wan Suk(1915~1969) beyond his operation of the Cheonil Gallery. The revelations that he worked as a designer for Cheonil Pharmaceutical and that he played a key role in various aspects of the Korean art world across art and design occurred when his works and materials(hereafter, the Lee Wan Suk Archive) were donated recently to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. The Lee Wan Suk Archive is vast. Lee compiled his portfolio meticulously, including items from the days of Cheonil Pharmaceutical. Matchboxes and stamps from around the world and newspaper articles related to foreign activities were retained as materials for his own reference. The archive also contains a number of works and art books that he acquired through overseas tours, as well as folk crafts collected during his time at the Korean Folk Crafts Institute. The Lee Wan Suk Archive includes posters produced immediately after Korean Liberation from Japan of August 15, 1945, several poster works that were displayed in exhibitions of the Industrial Art Association and overseas tours in 1950~60s, and many other works by fellow artists. Based on the Lee Wan Suk archive, this study traced Lee Wan Suk’s involvement with art. The aim was to organize his life, forgotten until now, chronologically, introducing significant extracts from the archive. Lee Wan Suk was a pioneering designer and a faithful supporter of Korean art. The study revealed and presented his activities, distinguishing between before and after 1945. Lee studied art in Japan and worked as a designer at Cheonil Pharmaceutical after returning to Korea. He participated in many artist groups such as the Industrial Art Association(Korea Visual Design and Crafts Association). In addition to running the Cheonil Gallery and the Korean Fork Craft Institute, Lee played an important role in the Korea Contemporary Art Exhibition tours to Southeast Asia. The study’s conclusions suggest future research topics based on items from the Lee Wan Suk archive.
Vol.50 No.-
The study of modern and contemporary artists associated with Jeonju aims to establish Jeonju’s art history. The purpose of this research was to identify artists connected to Jeonju, to elucidate the lives of major figures among them, and to provide critical annotations of their artistic practices and bodies of work, including compiled chronologies, thereby contributing to the construction of Jeonju’s art-historical narrative. By outlining a broad map of the human resources and relational networks that constitute Jeonju’s artistic field, this study assists in clarifying the identity of art in Jeonju. Beyond these ancillary outcomes, the research primarily sought to produce foundational materials to support future collection policies and exhibitions of the Jeonju Museum of Art, as well as to inform the development of educational programs. To this end, artists and their works were examined from multiple perspectives. This report details the findings of the research project regarding Jeonju's modern and contemporary artists, commissioned by Jeonju City and conducted by a six-member research team from December 2023 through September 30, 2024. The research team comprises six members. The Principal Investigator, Cho Eun-jeong, oversaw the entire project, including its design, supervision, and the writing of interpretive texts. Researchers Kim Mijeong, Hur Nayoung, and Hong Sunghu were responsible for surveying artists associated with Jeonju and preparing interpretive entries. Assistant Researcher Koo Jiwon conducted archival research, compiled artist lists, and prepared meeting minutes, while Lee Anna handled archival research, artist list compilation, and financial administration. In addition, six advisory scholars and numerous editorial advisors contributed to the research process. This study emphasized its function as foundational data for collection policies, exhibitions, and educational initiatives at the Jeonju Museum of Art. Accordingly, preliminary research was conducted on the role of public art museums, issues of locality, and regional art history. Based on this framework, artists associated with Jeonju were investigated and catalogued as primary source material for Jeonju’s art history. Initially, all professional artists active in Jeonju were considered for inclusion. However, a notably large number of artists were identified in comparison to other regions. Consequently, artists born up to 1955 were selected as subjects for full annotation, resulting in completed entries for 120 artists, despite limitations such as insufficient archival materials. Artist data were organized in Excel format and submitted to Jeonju City. Among those born up to 1955, 17 artists were recorded only in the Excel database, while 96 artists born between 1956 and the 1970s were likewise catalogued. The study of modern and contemporary artists in Jeonju moves beyond the identification or documentation of local practitioners. It constitutes an analytical framework for rearticulating Jeonju’s cultural identity and reassessing its significance within broader art-historical narratives. Through this research, Jeonju is positioned not merely as a provincial city but as a historically and conceptually significant site in which tradition, modernity, and contemporary artistic practices intersect.

This paper traces the formation of a structure centered on the National Art Exhibition during the period of the Korean modern artistic field’s emergence, by examining the processes of group establishment and exhibition organization from the immediate post-liberation period to the inauguration of the First National Art Exhibition. The artistic field is an institutional structure composed of various organizations such as art museums, art exhibitions, art schools, and art markets. It is a dynamic network through which artists and artworks are authorized and endowed with symbolic and economic capital. In Korea up to the 1970s, the nation-state functioned as the most crucial institution generating symbolic authority within the artistic field, with the National Art Exhibition serving as its central apparatus. The National Art Exhibition constituted both a pathway and a method through which art participated in the state-building, while the state rendered its presence visible through the exhibition. After liberation, artists formed associations and organized exhibitions not only as sovereign actors engaged in state- building but also as active agents in the constitution of power and institutions within the artistic field. The agendas proposed by the Chosun Art Association immediately after liberation included the establishment of a national art exhibition, the writing of art history, the founding of art museums, and the institutionalization of art education. Subsequently, between 1946 and 1948, the Chosun Plastic Arts Alliance, the Chosun Art Alliance, and the Chosun Art and Culture Association organized exhibitions as central organizations within the artistic field, with a broad spectrum of artists aligned with the moderate left participating in these groups. The Chosun Art Alliance exhibition of 1946 presented a wide spectrum of works ranging from abstract paintings to socialist themes. The founding of a national art exhibition was articulated as an urgent, widely shared project equivalent to the founding of the state. Although the Chosun Comprehensive Art Exhibition was held under the provisional Korean administration of US military government, it failed to assume the characteristics of a national art exhibition in terms of both scale and organizational process. Following the suppression of opposing forces by the state violence revealed in Lee Qoede’s <People Ⅳ> during the establishment of the South Korean government in 1948, the Republic of Korea Art Exhibition (National Art Exhibition, Gukjeon) was inaugurated in 1949, marking the formation of the national art exhibition system and the consolidation of academism. While the National Art Exhibition was grounded in institutional forms established during the colonial period and in the symbolic capital accumulated by artists at that time, it was founded and launched as a core apparatus that produced new symbolic and economic capital constitutive of the artistic field of the new state. Through this process, artists’ participation in nation-building was initially completed, and at the same time, a state-centered structure of the Korean modern artistic field was formed.

This paper explores the import, valence and stature of Hyundai and Hyundai Art(transliterated as “contemporary art”) in the discourse surrounding Korean art throughout the latter half of the 20th century, with an examination of the evolving relationships with neighboring concepts such as “modern,” “abstraction,” “figuration,” and “avant-garde.” The overarching goal of this inquiry is to draw attention to a spectrum of practices and discourses associated with “Hyundai” and “Hyundai Art,” underscoring that a comprehensive understanding of Korean art history hinges on grasping the trajectory of Hyundai and Hyundai Art. Discussions regarding Hyundai Art within the realm of Korean art history often revolve around debates concerning its inception, whether it transpired in 1957 or 1958 (purportedly the years of the emergence of Korean Informel painting), or at an alternative juncture. These debates have yielded the unearthing of new source materials, the accumulation of diverse scholarly perspectives, and the facilitation of numerous exhibitions. However, the productive discourse surrounding contemporary Korean art extends beyond pinpointing a specific origin. This article posits that, regardless of the assumed starting point, Korean contemporary art has consistently been framed within a temporal context and has been a recurrent subject of contention concerning its significance, value, persuasiveness, and legitimacy. Crucially, this contention has persistently sought to discern whether the contemporary art in question is genuinely motivated by the present era in Korea. Asserting the existence of diverse manifestations of “Hyundai Art” in our context, this article urges to understand when the term "Hyundai Art" ceased to be used and, consequently, when Korean art began to embody its own contemporaneity.

Lee Seungjio is well known for his <Nucleus> series — paintings comprised of various cylindrical forms resembling pipes. Throughout his lifetime, Lee devoted himself to these distinctively clear, rational and deliberate abstract pieces. Existing analyses of Lee Seungjio’s paintings often view the pipe-like forms in the <Nucleus> series as symbols of modernization unfolding in Korea at the time, and regard his work as a model example of Korean geometric abstract art. Additionally, some have associated the changes since the 1970s in Lee’s paintings with the conceptual art of group “AG” or Lee’s interest in phenomenology. In other analyses, Seungjio has been touted as one of the founding fathers of monochrome abstract art in Korea. However, in these previous studies, it is difficult to find detailed explanation regarding what exact features of the <Nucleus> series made it different from other geometric abstract art at the time — or what exactly Korean op art even was. Is there really no way of recognizing the significance of Lee Seungjio’s art, without referencing his core artistic features to specific organizations or art styles? This paper began from the above question. This paper aims to achieve two things: first, to regard Lee’s paintings as a visual indicator existing within the societal/cultural and political/economic climate of the time; second, to propose a new way to understand not only Lee’s art but also the history of Korean geometrical abstract art since the 1960s. This paper finds that Lee’s <Nucleus> series was born from the intersection of 《National Art Exhibition of The Republic of Korea》, avant-garde art group “Origin”, and industrial design — leading the paintings to simultaneously embody the contradicting qualities of avant-garde/ academic, and pure/applied arts. Furthermore, this paper also argues that the <Nucleus> series cannot be understood only in the confines of figurative painting, geometric or monochromatic abstract painting. This paper seeks to overcome the limitations of existing research methods in Korean art history, which has traditionally been rooted on nationalism and evolutionist views. As an alternative, this paper employs a new methodological framework to investigate geometric abstract art and Lee Seungjio’s works. As a result, this study finds that in his styles spanning across the figurative, the abstract, and the hyper-realistic, Lee’s only objective as an artist ultimately lied in the visual issues of paintings. In conclusion, Lee Seungjio’s <Nucleus> series successfully created a complete visual illusion by overcoming the resistance of medium, fulfilling the duty long carried by modernism abstract paintings. From this, we can discover from Lee’s abstract works a new possibility for Korean modernism — one that neither relies on tradition nor spirit.
