Silymarin attenuates escitalopram (cipralex) induced pancreatic injury in adult male albino rats: a biochemical, histological, and immunohistochemical approach

Rasha Mamdouh Salama(Rasha Mamdouh Salama ),Sara Gamal Tayel(Sara Gamal Tayel ) 대한해부학회 2023 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.56 No.1

Depression is a prevalent global problem since ages, predominately treated with SSRI. Cipralex, is an antidepressant of the SSRIs class used as a remedy for mood, depression and anxiety. Silymarin (SIL), a natural free radical scavenging, has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This hypothesis evaluates, for the first time, the role of cipralex on the structure of the endocrine and exocrine components of the pancreas and assess the beneficial effects of SIL on these changes. Forty-five rats were divided into control, cipralex, and cipralex plus SIL groups. During sacrifice, all rats and pancreases were weighed and the ratio of pancreatic weight (PW) to rat weight (RW) was calculated, blood samples were collected to estimate fasting glucose, insulin and amylase levels, the specimens were prepared for histological, immunohistochemical (inducible nitric oxide synthase [iNOS], tumour necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-α], caspase 3, proliferating cell nuclear antigen [PCNA], and anti-insulin antibody), and morphometrical studies. Cipralex group exhibited marked destruction of the pancreatic architecture of the exocrine and endocrine parts, with a dense collagen fiber deposition. Also, there is highly significant decrease (P<0.001) of PW/RT ratio, insulin, and amylase levels, the number and diameter of islets of Langerhans, the number of PCNA positive immunoreactive cells, and the number of insulin positive β-cells. Furthermore, a highly significant increase of glucose level, iNOS, TNF-α, and caspase-3 positive immunoreactive cells in the islets of Langerhans and acinar cells were observed. SIL improves the pancreatic histological architecture, weight loss, biochemical, and immunohistochemical analyses. Administering SIL is advantageous in managing cipralex induced pancreatic injury via its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic qualities.

Metabolic Effects of Honey in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Randomized Crossover Pilot Study

        Mamdouh M. Abdulrhman,Mohamed H. El-Hefnawy,Rasha H. Aly,Rania H. Shatla,Rasha M. Mamdouh,Doaa M. Mahmoud,Waheed S. Mohamed 한국식품영양과학회 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.1

The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic effects of 12-week honey consumption on patients suffering from type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM). This was a randomized crossover clinical trial done in the National Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Cairo, Egypt. Twenty patients of both sexes aged 4–18 years with type 1 DM and HbA1C<10% participated in the study. They were randomized into two equal groups (intervention to control and control to intervention). The dietary intervention was 12-week honey consumption in a dose of 0.5 mL/kg body weight per day. The main outcome measures were serum glucose, lipids, and C-peptide, and anthropometric measurements. None of participants were lost in follow-up. The intervention resulted in significant decreases in subscapular skin fold thickness (SSFT; P=.002), fasting serum glucose (FSG; P=.001), total cholesterol (P=.0001), serum triglycerides (TG; P=.0001), and low-density lipoprotein (P=.0009), and significant increases in fasting C-peptide (FCP; P=.0004) and 2-h postprandial C-peptide (PCP; P=.002). As possible long-term effects of honey after its withdrawal, statistically significant reductions in midarm circumference (P=.000), triceps skin fold thickness (P=.006), SSFT (P=.003), FSG (P=.005), 2-h postprandial serum glucose (P=.000), TG (P=.003), and HbA1C (P=.043), and significant increases in FCP (P=.002) and PCP (P=.003) were observed. This small clinical trial suggests that long-term consumption of honey might have positive effects on the metabolic derangements of type 1 DM.

Jacobi discrete approximation for solving optimal control problems

        Mamdouh El-Kady 대한수학회 2012 대한수학회지 Vol.49 No.1

This paper attempts to present a numerical method for solving optimal control problems. The method is based upon constructing the $n$-th degree Jacobi polynomials to approximate the control vector and use differentiation matrix to approximate derivative term in the state system. The system dynamics are then converted into system of algebraic equations and hence the optimal control problem is reduced to constrained optimization problem. Numerical examples illustrate the robustness, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

      • Empirical Analysis of the Complexity Evolution in Open-Source Software Systems

Mamdouh Alenezi,Khaled Almustafa 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Hybrid Information Techno Vol.8 No.2

When the software system evolves, its scale is increasingly growing to the degree where it is very hard to handle. Measuring the internal quality of the source code is one of the goals of making software development an engineering practice. Source Lines of Code (SLOC) and Cyclomatic Complexity (CC) are usually considered indicators of the complexity of a software system. Software complexity is an essential characteristic of a software system where it plays an important role in its success or failure. Although understanding the complexity is very important, yet it is not clear how complexity evolves in open source systems. In this paper, we study the complexity evolution of five open source projects from different domains. We analyze the growth of ten releases of these systems and show how complexity evolves over time. We then show how these systems conform to the second Lehman's law of software evolution.

One-Step Dyeing and Antimicrobial Finishing of PET Fabric with Novel 4-Arylazopyrazolone Disperse Dyes

        Mamdouh A. Sofan,Tarek Abou Elmaaty,Neveen M. Hashem,Laijiu Zheng 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.12

Azopyrazole disperse dyes 8-12 could be synthesized either by condensing ethyl 3-hydroxy-2-aryldiazenylbutenoates 3-7 with S-methyl hydrazine carbodithioate 1 or by coupling the parent pyrazole 2 with diazotized aniline, psubstitutedanilines and/or 4-aminoantipyrine. These dyes were applied to polyester fabrics using a high-temperature dyeingmethod at 120 °C and displayed yellow to orange hues. Raman spectra of the dyed samples undoubtedly excluded ringdyeing and were found to agree with the proposed structures. The synthesized disperse dyes were found to possess very gooddyeing properties, as indicated by color strength measurements, and all of them except dye 12 had a color strength (K/S) valueranging from 19-23. The dyed fabrics exhibited excellent fastness to washing and dry and wet rubbing as well as lightfastness, which varied from moderate to very good. The antimicrobial activities of the synthesized pyrazoles 2 and 8-12 aswell as the dyed fabric samples against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were measured, and the results showedvery good activity.

Effect of Honey on 50% Complement Hemolytic Activity in Infants with Protein Energy Malnutrition: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study

Mamdouh Abdulmaksoud Abdulrhman,May Fouad Nassar,Hisham Waheed Mostafa,Zakaria Abdulhalim El-Khayat,Marwa Wageh Abu El Naga 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.5

Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) is associated with a significant impairment of cell-mediated immunity and complement system, which may be responsible for the high incidence of infections among these patients. This study was designed to examine the effect of honey, as a natural substance, on the 50% complement hemolytic activity (CH50) in patients with PEM. Thirty patients with PEM and 20 healthy infants serving as controls participated in this study. The patients were randomized to receive either honey (group 1) or placebo (group 2), in addition to conventional nutritional rehabilitation therapy. Measurements of weight, midarm circumference, skin fold thickness, serum albumin, and CH50 were done for all patients before and after 2 weeks of rehabilitation. Before nutritional rehabilitation, the CH50 was significantly lower in the PEM groups compared with the control. However, after rehabilitation, the CH50 increased significantly in both PEM groups, compared with the pre-interventional state and with the controls. Moreover, the rise of CH50 was significantly more in the honey group compared with the placebo. On the other hand, the improvement in the anthropometric measures and serum albumin did not differ significantly between the honey and placebo groups after rehabilitation. Thus honey supplementation in patients with PEM increased the level of CH50. Whether this would have an effect on the frequency and severity of infections in patients with PEM needs further studies.

      • Free Paper Session : Liver 2 ; Management Of Bleeding Anorectal Varices In cirrhosis

        ( Mamdouh Gabr ) 대한소화기학회 2007 SIDDS Vol.9 No.-

Background/Aims: Bleeding from anorectal varices (AVR) is a rare complication of portal hypertension in crirrhosis. Though rare, yet it`s usually massive and life threatening. No agreement has been reached on which could be the optimal therapeutic strategy for bleeding AVR. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic band ligation (EBL) in the treatment of 12 patients with lower gastrointestinal bleeding from ruptured AVR. Methods: Emergency colonoscopy was done within 24 hours of admission to confirm the diagnosis and thereafter EBL was done with a pneumatic band ligation device. A follow-up endoscopy was done one week after the initial haemostatic procedure searching for any complications. Results: Successful haemostasis was achieved in all patients (100%). The only complication observed was a clean base shallow post EBL ulcers in 6 patients (50%). Recurrent bleeding was observed in 2 patients (16.6%). Conclusions: The experience reported in the present study confirms the efficacy and safety of this haemostatic modality in the treatment of this rare and frequently fatal cause of lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
