        Synthetic Cages Associated With Increased Rates of Revision Surgery and Higher Costs Compared to Allograft in ACDF in the Nonelderly Patient

        Objective: The aim of this study was to compare all-cause reoperation rates and costs in nonelderly patients treated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with structural allograft versus synthetic cages for degenerative pathology. Methods: We queried a private claims database to identify adult patients (≤65 years) who underwent single-level ACDF in a hospital setting using either structural allograft or a synthetic cage (polyetheretherketone, metal, or hybrid device), from 2010 to 2016. The rate of all-cause reoperations at 2 years were compared between the 2 groups. Index hospitalization costs and 90-day complication rates were also compared. Significance was set at p<0.05. Results: A total of 26,754 patients were included in the study. 11,514 patients (43%) underwent ACDF with structural allograft and 15,240 (57%) underwent ACDF with a synthetic cage. The patients in the allograft group were younger and more likely to be male. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups with respect to 90-day complications including: wound dehiscence, dysphagia, dysphonia, and hematoma/seroma. In the 2-year postoperative period, the synthetic cage group had a significantly higher rate of all-cause reoperation compared to the allograft group (9.1% vs. 8.0%, p=0.002). Index hospitalization costs were significantly higher in the synthetic cage group compared to those in the allograft group ($23,475 vs. $20,836, p<0.001). Conclusion: Structural allograft is associated with lower all-cause reoperation rates and lower index costs in nonelderly patients undergoing ACDF surgery for degenerative pathology. It is important to understand this data as we transition toward value-based care.

        Application of simple adaptive control to an MR damper-based control system for seismically excited nonlinear buildings

        In this paper, Simple Adaptive Control (SAC) is used to enhance the seismic response of nonlinear tall buildings based on acceleration feedback. Semi-active MR dampers are employed as control actuator due to their reliability and well-known dynamic models. Acceleration feedback is used because of availability, cost-efficiency and reliable measurements of acceleration sensors. However, using acceleration feedback in the control loop causes the structure not to apparently meet some requirements of the SAC algorithm. In addition to defining an appropriate SAC reference model and using inherently stable MR dampers, a modification in the original structure of the SAC is proposed in order to improve its adaptability to the situation in which the plant does not satisfy the algorithm\' s stability requirements. To investigate the performance of the developed control system, a numerical study is conducted on the benchmark 20-story nonlinear building and the responses of the SAC-controlled structure are compared to an H2/LQG clipped-optimal controller under the effect of different seismic excitations. As indicated by the results, SAC controller effectively reduces the story drifts and hence the seismically-induced damage throughout the structural members despite its simplicity, independence of structural parameters and while using fewer number of dampers in contrast with the H2/LQG clipped-optimal controller.

        Artificial Intelligence Applications as a Modern Trend to Achieve Organizational Innovation in Jordanian Commercial Banks

        The objective of this study was to see how artificial intelligence applications affected organizational innovation in Jordanian commercial banks. Both independent and dependent variables were measured in three dimensions: expert systems, neural network systems, and fuzzy logic systems for artificial intelligence applications variable. Product innovation, process innovation, and management innovation for the organizational innovation variable. To achieve study objectives, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to a sample of one hundred fifty-three managers in Jordanian commercial banks, who were selected according to the simple random sampling method. Except for the neural network systems dimension, which comes in at an average level, the study indicated that there is a high level of organizational innovation and artificial intelligence applications. Furthermore, the findings revealed that artificial intelligence applications have a significant impact on organizational innovation in Jordanian commercial banks, with the most important artificial intelligence application being a fuzzy logic system. The study suggested keeping track of technological advancements in the field of artificial intelligence applications and incorporating them into banking operations by benchmarking with the best commercial bank practices and allocating a portion of the budget to technological applications and infrastructure development, as well as balancing between technology use and information security risks to ensure client privacy is protected.

        Power Bases and Job Satisfaction in Sports Organizations

        This study aims to investigate the relationship between coaches’ and assistant coaches’ perceptions of their superior’s power base, and the coaches’ perceptions of their own job satisfaction in sports organizations, using evidence from elite and non-elite settings in the UK. A quantitative methods approach was used to gather the data. Two hundred and twenty-five surveys were completed from coaches and assistant coaches of elite and non-elite sports organizations. Data were analyzed using SPSS. The results revealed that there is a positive relationship between power bases and job satisfaction. Interestingly, the results of this study can be summarized in the following points: a) there are positive relationships between power bases and job satisfaction; b) there was no difference between elite and non-elite settings in power bases; c) there is no difference between elite and non-elite settings in job satisfaction. Practical implications of the findings are discussed, together with limitations and ideas for future research.

        Minimizing false positive rate for DoS attack detection: A hybrid SDN-based approach

        Denial of Service attacks (DoS) are considered to be a major threat against today’s communication networks. Recently, a novel networking paradigm that provides enhanced programming abilities has been proposed to attain an efficient control and management in future networks. In this work, we take the advantage of software-defined networking (SDN) to minimize the false positive rate of DoS attack detection systems. Our system combines flow-based and packet-based approaches to minimize the false positive rate (FPR). The experimental results conducted on NSL-KDD dataset have shown the effectiveness of our proposed approach, which successfully minimized the FPR as low as 0.3%.

        Semi-symmetric cubic graph of order $12p^3$

        Influence of mesiodens on adjacent teeth and the timing of its safe removal

        Purpose: To focus on the effects of the presence of mesiodens on adjacent teeth and to investigate the timing of its safe removal. Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography examinations, obtained at Okayama University Hospital over a three-year period, were inspected. Data were recorded including the number of mesiodens; associated abnormalities; and the relationship with neighboring structures. Depending on multiple factors, the risk of developing complications due to early extraction of a mesiodens was divided into three categories: high, medium, and low risk. Results: A total of 5,958 cone-beam computed tomography exams were obtained, 460 patients aged 3-85 years were diagnosed with a total of 568 mesiodens, 382 (67.3%) of which were discovered in young patients (age <10 years), and 333 (87.2%) of these were associated with abnormalities. Regarding the risk categories, 11 (1.9%) were considered to be in the high-risk, five (0.9%) in the medium-risk and 552 (97.2%) in the low-risk categories. Moreover, eight out of 11 high-risk mesiodens were extracted and no post-operative complications have been seen. Conclusion: As the results showed that no postoperative complications were seen in all the extracted cases of high- risk mesiodens, this indicates the possibility of safe extraction at an early age which could reduce related future complications.

        Comparative study on the performance of microwave-assisted plasma DRM in nitrogen and argon atmospheres at a low microwave power

        Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is an attractive route to convert CH4 and CO2 into syngas (a mixture ofCO and H2). In this work, the performance of microwave-assisted DRM at atmospheric pressure (interms of CH4 and CO2 conversions, H2 and CO selectivities, H2 and CO yields, and H2 to CO ratio) isstudied as functions of additive gasflow rate, microwave power, CO2 to CH4 inlet supply ratio, andreaction time. Two additive gases were used, i.e., nitrogen and argon. Microwave-assisted DRMexperiments in both gases show identical trend of conversions, selectivities, yields, and product ratio. DRM performances in both additive gases atmosphere were stable for up to 8 h. Under the sameoperating conditions, using Ar as an additive gas, however, led to higher H2 and CO selectivities andyields and thus, higher H2 to CO ratio relative to using N2 as an additive gas. Maximum CH4 and CO2conversions of 79.35% and 44.82%, H2 and CO selectivities of 50.12% and 58.42%, H2 and CO yields of39.77% and 32.89%, and H2 to CO ratio of 0.86 were obtained at 700 W and N2, CO2, and CH4 flow rates of1.5, 0.4, and 0.2 L min 1, respectively.

        Free vibration analysis of corroded steel plates

        Vibration analysis of unstiffened/stiffened plates has long been studied due to its importance in the design and condition assessmentsof ship and offshore structures. Corrosion is inevitable in steel structures and has been so far considered in strength analysis of structures. We studied the free vibration of pitted corroded plates with simply supported boundary conditions. Finite element analysis, withABAQUS, was used to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of corroded plates. Influential parameters including plateaspect ratio, degree of pit, one-sided/both-sided corroded plate, and different corrosion patterns were investigated. By increasing the degreeof corrosion, reduction of natural frequency increases. Plate aspect ratio and plate dimensions have no influence on reduction ofnatural frequency. Different corrosion patterns on the surface of one-sided corroded plates have little influence on reduction of naturalfrequency. Ratio of pit depth over plate thickness has no influence on the reduction of natural frequency. The reduction of natural frequencyin both-sided corroded plates is higher than one-sided corroded plates with the same amount of total corrosion loss. Mode shapesof vibration would change due to corrosion, except square mode shapes.

        Blast response of corroded steel plates

        Numerical results for one- and both-sided corroded steel plates subjected to blast loading are presented. Finite element analysis, withABAQUS software, is employed to determine the deformation and stress distributions. The results for the case of triangular pulse pressureon un-corroded plates are validated against literature-based data and then, detailed parametric studies are carried-out. The effects ofinfluential parameters including, plate aspect ratio, degree of pit and different ratio of pit depth at each sides of the plate are investigated. The results show that position of pitted surface in respect to applied pressure is the most influential parameter on reduction of dynamicload carrying capacity of pitted plates. By increasing degree of pitting, reduction of dynamic load carrying capacity decrease more.
