In recent, many forest residues have been generated by the National Forest Management Operation. Unfortunately, most of the forest residues are supposed to be used as raw materials for burning fuels like wood pellets. In this study, we investigated whether or not this forest biomass mixed in various ages and species could be used as raw materials for making kraft pulps in a view of optical properties.

This study investigated the prime difference between different methods for measuring a sizing degree. Based on the results coming from the study, a new type of the automatic measuring system of a sizing degree. The system includes synchronized devices for measuring contact angle and St?ckigt sizing degree at the same time.

In the world, burning fossil fuels such as oil, petroleum, gasoline has created the global warming due to especially carbon dioxide gas emission. Therefore, these fossil fuels must be replaced by eco-friendly feadstocks. The wood pellets are one of valuable alternative fuels that can replace oil-based fuels within a short period of time. Unfortunately, there are no enough forest biomass for wood pellets in Korea. Nevertheless, Korea government has been trying to use most of forest biomass generated from the National Forest Management Operation. This does not make sense in an economic point of view.

Currently, many forest residues have been generated by the National Forest Management Operation. Unfortunately, most of the forest residues are supposed to be used as raw materials for burning fuels like wood pellets. Even though the forest biomass must be effectively used for making high value-added products, they may be subject to disposable raw materials for wood pellets. Wood pellets are regarded as burning fuels with less contribution to the decrease in carbon gas emission, compared to raw materials for kraft pulps. In this study, we studied whether or not forest biomass mixed with various ages and, species could be used as raw materials for kraft pulps.

This study was to develope a novel automatic system for measuring Stöckigt sizing degree and contact angle at a time. The newly developed system could get reproducible results through automation of all procedures including liquid dropping, image acquisition and measurement of both Stöckigt sizing degree and contact angle. For the Stöckigt sizing test, the automatic system could measure sizing degree with more definite differences according to different dosage of AKD, compared to the conventional methods.

Growing stock of forest in Korea is considerably lower than any other developed countires. This is closely associated to low self-sufficiency of woods for pulp. Nevertheless, woods generated from the National Forest Management Operation have been mostly used to make wood pellets. Such woods must be allocated to produce value-added products like pulps, instead of wood pellet. Wood pellets can be manufactured from lignocellulosic raw materials such as corn stalk, bark, leaves, soy bean stalk, PKS and so on. Then new technology like torrefaction may be applied to improve heating efficiency of pellets made of such lignocellulosic biomass.
