Patient-reported Outcomes of Acupuncture for Symptom Control in Cancer

        Lora M.A. Thompson,Sarah Rausch Osian,Paul B. Jacobsen,Peter A S Johnstone 사단법인약침학회 2015 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.8 No.3

Acupuncture is increasingly offered as a treatment option for managing cancer-related symptoms. In addition to randomized controlled trials, patient-reported outcomes may be needed to establish treatment effectiveness. This study retrospectively examined the symptoms and the satisfaction ratings of 90 patients receiving acupuncture at an integrative oncology clinic. At least two acupuncture sessions were completed by 72% of the sample. The prevalence rates of fatigue, pain, anxiety, physical distress, emotional distress, and poor quality of life before acupuncture were > 62%. Paired t tests revealed a significant reduction in symptoms from baseline until after the first acupuncture session and after the last session (p < 0.05). Fewer (21%) patients reported nausea, which was significantly reduced after the first session, but not the last session. Reductions represented clinically meaningful differences in 33–41% of patients after the first session and in 41–53% of patients after the last session for all symptoms, except nausea. A small subset of patients (0–8%) reported worsening symptoms after acupuncture. The majority were satisfied with the service. The results of this study suggest that acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment for cancer symptom management. While high-quality trials are still needed to establish the treatment's efficacy, patients may benefit from these primarily safe, low-cost services.

“Just being real”: A post-colonial critique on Amerasian engagement in Central Luzon’s sex industry

        Lora Chapman 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2017 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.23 No.2

This paper explores the historical and social cultural factors that shape Filipino Amerasian women’s participation in sex work in the Olongapo red light district, adjacent to the former US Subic Bay Naval Base. The analysis shares terrain covered by other studies that examine the link between US militarism and Asian sex industries. In addition, this paper considers how racialized and sexualized power structures situate Amerasian women in specific ways in relation to sex work in the Philippines. A feminist post-colonial approach, including discourses on race, miscegenation and nationalism, provides a fresh perspective on how colonial and post-colonial structures and systems of power have shaped the sex industry as it is today, contributing to what may be an overrepresentation of Filipina Amerasians in sex work.

David Lora,Agustín Gómez de la Cámara,Sara Pedraza Fernández,Rafael Enríquez de Salamanca,José Fermín Pérez-Regadera Gómez 대한부인종양학회 2017 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.28 No.5

Objective: To externally validate the prognostic models for predicting the time-dependentoutcome in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) who were treated withconcurrent chemoradiotherapy in an independient cohort. Methods: A historical cohort of 297 women with LACC who were treated with radicalconcurrent chemoradiotherapy from 1999 to 2014 at the 12 de Octubre University Hospital(H12O), Madrid, Spain. The external validity of prognostic models was quantified regardingdiscrimination, calibration, measures of overall performance, and decision curve analyses. Results: The review identified 8 studies containing 13 prognostic models. Different(International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics [FIGO] stages, parametriuminvolvement, hydronephrosis, location of positive nodes, and race) but related cohorts withvalidation cohort (5-year overall survival [OS]=70%; 5-year disease-free survival [DFS]=64%;average age of 50; and over 79% squamous cell) were evaluated. The following models exhibitedgood external validity in terms of discrimination and calibration but limited clinical utility: theOS model at 3 year from Kidd et al.'s study (area under the receiver operating characteristiccurve [AUROC]=0.69; threshold of clinical utility [TCU] between 36% and 50%), the models ofDFS at 1 year from Kidd et al.'s study (AUROC=0.64; TCU between 24% and 32%) and 2 yearsfrom Rose et al.'s study (AUROC=0.70; TCU between 19% and 58%) and the distant recurrencemodel at 5 years from Kang et al.'s study (AUROC=0.67; TCU between 12% and 36%). Conclusion: The external validation revealed the statistical and clinical usefulness of 4prognostic models published in the literature.

Prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome Among Overweight and Obese College Students in Korea.

Cha, Eunseok,Burke, Lora E,Kim, Kevin H,Shin, Yun-A,Kim, Hee Young Aspen Publishers 2010 JOURNAL OF CARDIOVASCULAR NURSING Vol.25 No.1

<P>OBJECTIVES:: This study examined the prevalence of metabolic risk factors among overweight and obese college students aged 18 to 29 years in Korea. METHODS:: Baseline data from a healthy lifestyle intervention study for overweight and obese college students in Korea were used. We recruited the sample (N = 73) (84% male; mean [SD] age, 23.77 [2.45] years) from 2 universities in Seoul, Korea, and measured body mass index, waist-hip circumstance, blood pressure, and fasting blood chemistry. Descriptive statistics, Spearman rank order correlations, and analysis of variance were conducted using SPSS 16.0 (SPSS Inc, Chicago, Illinois) for windows. RESULTS:: Three-fourths of the participants were identified as being viscerally obese based on the Asia Pacific criteria. Of the total sample, about 12% and 20% were defined as having metabolic syndrome according to the National Cholesterol Education Program-the Adult Treatment Panel III and International Diabetes Federation, respectively. Concordance between the National Cholesterol Education Program-the Adult Treatment Panel III and International Diabetes Federation definitions was very good in the current study (Cohen kappa coefficient = 0.74, P <.001). Body mass index was significantly correlated with greater triglyceride and systolic and diastolic blood pressure and waist circumference but with lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS:: Early screening and targeted interventions to prevent obesity and the metabolic syndrome are urgently needed to promote health for adolescents and young adults in South Korea.</P>

      • Electronic excitations in molecular solids: bridging theory and experiment

Skelton, Jonathan M.,Lora da Silva, E.,Crespo-Otero, Rachel,Hatcher, Lauren E.,Raithby, Paul R.,Parker, Stephen C.,Walsh, Aron The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015 Faraday discussions Vol.177 No.-

<P>As the spatial and temporal resolution accessible to experiment and theory converge, computational chemistry is an increasingly powerful tool for modelling and interpreting spectroscopic data. However, the study of molecular processes, in particular those related to electronic excitations (<I>e.g.</I> photochemistry), frequently pushes quantum-chemical techniques to their limit. The disparity in the level of theory accessible to periodic and molecular calculations presents a significant challenge when modelling molecular crystals, since accurate calculations require a high level of theory to describe the molecular species, but must also take into account the influence of the crystalline environment on their properties. In this article, we briefly review the different classes of quantum-chemical techniques, and present an overview of methods that account for environmental influences with varying levels of approximation. Using a combination of solid-state and molecular calculations, we quantitatively evaluate the performance of implicit-solvent models for the [Ni(Et4dien)(η2-O,ON)(η1-NO2)] linkage-isomer system as a test case. We focus particularly on the accurate reproduction of the energetics of the isomerisation, and on predicting spectroscopic properties to compare with experimental results. This work illustrates how the synergy between periodic and molecular calculations can be exploited for the study of molecular crystals, and forms a basis for the investigation of more challenging phenomena, such as excited-state dynamics, and for further methodological developments.</P>
