Intake, digestibility, and performance of lambs fed spineless cactus cv. Orelha de Elefante Mexicana

        Lopes Levi Auto,Ferreira Marcelo de Andrade,Batista Ângela Maria Vieira,Maciel Michel do Vale,de Andrade Rodrigo Barbosa,Munhame Joana Albino,Silva Tomás Guilherme Pereira da,Cardoso Daniel Barros,Vér 아세아·태평양축산학회 2020 Animal Bioscience Vol.33 No.8

Objective: To evaluate the effects of the carmine cochineal-resistant spineless cactus genotypes cv. Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (Opuntia) and Miúda (Nopalea) on the intake and digestibility of nutrients, ingestive behavior, performance, and ultrasound measurements of growing lambs. Methods: Thirty-six male (non-castrated) Santa Inês lambs were used, with an average age of 6 months and an initial average weight of 22.0±2.9 kg. They were distributed in a completely randomized design with 3 treatments (Tifton hay, Nopalea and Opuntia) and 12 replications, using initial weight as a covariate. The experimental period was 86 days, with the first 30 days used for the adaptation of the animals to the facilities, diets and management, and the remaining 56 days used for evaluation and data collection. Results: The intake and apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), total carbohydrates (TC), non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC), and total digestible nutrients (TDN) showed a significant difference (p<0.05) as a function of the diets, with the Nopalea treatment (p<0.05) increasing DM intake (g/kg and % body weight [BW]), CP, TDN, and TC digestibility, whereas the Tifton hay diet led to a high (p<0.001) neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap) g/d intake, NDFap (BW %) and digestibility of said nutrient. There was no effect of treatments (p>0.05) on feeding time, however, rumination time and total chewing time were higher (p<0.05) for animals fed Tifton hay. The performance of the animals was similar (p>0.05). For the ultrasound measurements, Nopalea promoted an increase in the final loin eye area, compared to Tifton hay. Conclusion: The use of spineless cactus variety Miúda leads to the greater intake and digestibility of nutrients. The evaluated carmine cochineal-resistant spineless cactus genotypes are alternatives for semi-arid regions as they do not negatively affect the performance of growing lambs.

Lateral pterygoid muscle volume and migraine in patients with temporomandibular disorders

Lopes, Sergio Lucio Pereira De Castro,Costa, Andre Luiz Ferreira,Gamba, Thiago De Oliveira,Flores, Isadora Luana,Cruz, Adriana Dibo,Min, Li Li Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2015 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.45 No.1

Purpose: Lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) plays an important role in jaw movement and has been implicated in Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Migraine has been described as a common symptom in patients with TMDs and may be related to muscle hyperactivity. This study aimed to compare LPM volume in individuals with and without migraine, using segmentation of the LPM in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the TMJ. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with migraine and 20 volunteers without migraine underwent a clinical examination of the TMJ, according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs. MR imaging was performed and the LPM was segmented using the ITK-SNAP 1.4.1 software, which calculates the volume of each segmented structure in voxels per cubic millimeter. The chi-squared test and the Fisher's exact test were used to relate the TMD variables obtained from the MR images and clinical examinations to the presence of migraine. Logistic binary regression was used to determine the importance of each factor for predicting the presence of a migraine headache. Results: Patients with TMDs and migraine tended to have hypertrophy of the LPM (58.7%). In addition, abnormal mandibular movements (61.2%) and disc displacement (70.0%) were found to be the most common signs in patients with TMDs and migraine. Conclusion: In patients with TMDs and simultaneous migraine, the LPM tends to be hypertrophic. LPM segmentation on MR imaging may be an alternative method to study this muscle in such patients because the hypertrophic LPM is not always palpable.

Numerical calculation of the wind action on buildings using Eurocode 1 atmospheric boundary layer velocity profiles

        Lopes, M.F.P.,Paixao Conde, J.M.,Gomes, M. Gloria,Ferreira, J.G. Techno-Press 2010 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.13 No.6

When designing structures to the wind action, the variation of the mean wind velocity and turbulence parameters with the height above the ground must be taken into account. This paper presents the numerical simulation results of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) airflows, in a numerical domain with no obstacles and with a cubic building. The results of the flow characterization, obtained with the FLUENT CFD code were performed using the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with the MMK modification. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles in the inflow boundary were defined in accordance with the Eurocode 1.4, for different conditions of aerodynamic roughness. The maintenance of the velocity and turbulence characteristics along the domain were evaluated in an empty domain for uniform incident flow and the ABL Eurocode velocity profiles. The pressure coefficients on a cubic building were calculated using these inflow conditions.

      • Mammographic Screening of Women Attending a Reference Service Center in Southern Brazil

Lopes, Tiara Cristina Romeiro,Gravena, Angela Andreia Franca,de Oliveira Demitto, Marcela,Brischiliari, Sheila Cristina Rocha,Borghesan, Deise Helena Pelloso,Agnolo, Catia Millene Dell,de Barros Carva Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.3

Background: To investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with performance of annual mammography by women above 40 years of age. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted at an oncology reference service in Southern Brazil from October 2013 to October 2014 with 525 women aged 40 years or older. Results: The prevalence of annual mammography was 54.1%; annual mammographic screening was performed for women without private medical insurance, who were under hormone replacement therapy and who had used contraception in the past. An association was found between non-performance of breast clinical and self-examination and non-performance of mammographic screening. Conclusions: Use of mammography for breast cancer screening in the public health care setting proved to be accessible; nevertheless, the proportion of screened women was low, and they exhibited poor adherence to the basic measures of care recommended for breast assessment. Thus, control of breast cancer requires implementing actions targeting the population most vulnerable to non-adherence to screening in addition to continuously monitoring and assessing that population to reduce the prevalence of this disease.

      • Poster Session : PS 0389 ; Infectious Disease ; Vasculitis Caused by Infectious Agent or Allergic Reaction

( Armando Lopes Braz ),( Tiago Mascarenhas ),( Conceicao Quadrado ),( Jose Braz Nogueira ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

The clinical case is about a 44 years old male patient who was transferred to our hospital due to vasculitis. He was living in Angola for 8 years, being healthy until 2 weeks before being transferred. He started to feel abdominal cramps, muscular and joint pain over a period of 3 days. He was admitted in a clinic suspecting of malaria, starting antimalarial medication. On the 3rd day, the blood results for infectious diseases and maliaria were negative. He stooped the treatment and was discharged. After 4 days the patient started to complain of the same symptoms aggravated with asthenia, tiredness and diarrhea. He was readmitted and treated with antibiotics. Three days later some petequial lesions appeared in the lower limbs, getting spread arms and ears. These lesions got bigger over the next 2 days becoming macules and then changed to penfi - goid lesions with central necroses. The lesions covered the all lower limbs and part of the upper limbs, spearing the trunk. Corticosteroids were added to the treatment but he got worse, being later transferred to our hospital. The fi rst evaluation revealed a severe lower limbs edema, hypoalbuminemia and renal failure. All the treatment was stooped apart of pain killers and done some skin biopsies. The result was positive for leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Because of the GIT symptoms an endoscopy and colonoscopy was performed. The gut was covered with extense ulcerative lesions and was identifi ed inside them CMV. The body CT and Abdominal ultrasound were normal. The patient started the treatment with Valaciclovir during 15 days, followed with 6 weeks of Ganciclovir. This case still covered in dough, because it`s impossible to know if the hypersensibility reaction to the anti-malary drugs started the vasculites, triggering the CMV infection or the CMV developed the vasculitis.

Towards a consistant safety format of steel beam-columns: application of the new interaction formulae for ambient temperature to elevated temperatures

        N. Lopes,P. Piloto,P.M.M. Vila Real,L. Simões da Silva,J.-M. Franssen 국제구조공학회 2003 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.3 No.6

Two new formulae for the design of beam-columns at room temperature have been proposed into Eurocode 3, prEN 1993-1-1 (2002), and are the result of great efforts made by two working groups that followed different approaches, a French-Belgian team and an Austrian-German one. Under fire conditions the prEN 1993-1-2 (structural fire design) presents formulae, for the design of beam-columns based on the prENV 1993-1-1 (1992). In order to study the possibility of having, in part 1-1 and part 1-2 of the Eurocode 3, the same approach, a numerical research was made using the finite element program SAFIR, developed at the University of Liege for the study of structures subjected to fire.

ATP13A2 and Alpha-synuclein: a Metal Taste in Autophagy

Tomás Lopes da Fonseca,Tiago Fleming Outeiro 한국뇌신경과학회 2014 Experimental Neurobiology Vol.23 No.4

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a complex and multifactorial disorder of both idiopathic and genetic origin. Thus far, more than 20 geneshave been linked to familial forms of PD. Two of these genes encode for ATP13A2 and alpha-synuclein (asyn), proteins that seemto be members of a common network in both physiological and disease conditions. Thus, two different hypotheses have emergedsupporting a role of ATP13A2 and asyn in metal homeostasis or in autophagy. Interestingly, an appealing theory might combinethese two cellular pathways. Here we review the novel findings in the interaction between these two proteins and debate the excitingroads still ahead.

( Armando Lopes Braz ),( Tiago Mascarenhas ),( Conceicao Quadrado ),( Jose Braz Nogueira ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

A 67-year-old patient was sent to the internal medicine consultation due to dyspnea, orthopnea and lower limb edemas for 6 month, which got worse in the past 2 weeks, with diffi cult stabilization and control, even with intense therapy for heart failure. The therapy was improved and an echocardiogram was requested. One month later she was reevaluated showing no clinical improvement, so she was admitted in the internal medicine ward. The echocardiogram showed an ejection fraction of 21%, increased right chambers, severe pulmonary hypertension and left ventricle dilatation with depressed cardiac function. The therapy for heart failure was optimized and a ventilation-perfusion scyntigraphy was performed to evaluate the respiratory system. It revealed areas of pulmonary collapse and pulmonary embolism. On the ward she suffered a sudden episode of dyspnea and left leg edema and experienced severe pain. An ultrasound of the lower limbs proved the existence of bilateral severe deep venous thrombosis. For a further investigation the patient did a body CT-scan and cancer markers were searched. The CA19.9 was 253679 and there were several metastatic lesions on the liver and an infracentrimetic mass on the pancreatic tail on the CTScan. She started anticoagulation for prevention of other pulmonary embolism, while waiting for a pancreatic biopsy. The patient died 3 month after the diagnosis due to a sudden Myocardial infarction. The symptoms of heart failure dominated the whole clinical picture, being the DVT the wind of change to establish the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, a scary disease that was silent for so long. This case shows the importance of the paraneoplastic symptoms such the bilateral DVT which was the important milestone for a further investigation and the fi nal diagnose.

Experimental Behaviour of the Reverse Channel Joint Component at Elevated and Ambient Temperatures

Fernanda Lopes,Aldina Santiago,Luís Simões da Silva,Tim Heistermann,Milan Veljkovic,José Guilherme da Silva 한국강구조학회 2013 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.13 No.3

The reverse channel connection appears to have the best combination of desirable features under fire loading: moderate construction cost, ability to develop catenary action and extremely high ductility through deformation of the web channel (Ding and Wang, 2007). This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of a reverse channel component conducted at the University of Coimbra as part of the European RFCS COMPFIRE Project, the main focus of which is to characterise the behaviour of steel joints that connect steel beams to concrete-filled tubular columns under natural fire loading. A series of tensile and compressive tests at ambient and elevated temperatures was conducted. The purposes of the experimental tests were to characterise the strength, stiffness and ductility of this joint component and to establish a relationship between force, displacement and temperature.
