        Proteomic analysis of Cry1Ac and Cry2Aa binding proteins in brush border membrane vesicles of the Chilo suppressalis midgut

        Transgenic rice expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry1Ac and Cry2Aa toxins have proven resistant to lepidopteran pests in China, including the striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis. Identifying the molecular mechanisms through which Cry toxins affect insect pests is essential, both for understanding the nature of their toxicity, and for assessing the potential for the development of resistance to such toxins. In this study, both onedimensional gel electrophoresis (1-DE), combined ligand blots and mass spectrometry, were used to identify proteins binding to the Cry1Ac and Cry2Aa toxins in brush border membrane vesicles (BBMVs) of the C. suppressalis larvae midgut. Aminopeptidase-N (APN), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), cadherin-like (CAD), ATP-binding cassette transporter subfamily C1 protein (ABCC1), actin, ATPase, alpha amylase, and heat shock protein cognate (HSPC), were detected in Cry1Ac binding bands, and APN, actin, ATPase and HSPC were identified as Cry2Aa potential binding proteins. The novel potential binding protein, delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, was also detected in both Cry1Ac and Cry2Aa binding bands. This is the first study to comprehensively identify the proteins that bind to Cry1Ac and Cry2Aa toxins in C. suppressalis.

        Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Preparation of SnO2/MoS2 Composites and Their Electrochemical Performance

        We introduce a two-step hydrothermal and microwave method to prepare novel SnO2/MoS2 composites. The as-prepared samples are well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The experimental results indicate that the SnO2/MoS2 composites are composed of MoS2 nanosheets and ultrafine SnO2 nanoparticles with mean size of 3–4 nm which are well-distributed and anchored on the surface of MoS2 nanosheets. The resultant composites demonstrate prominently improved electrochemical performances, which could be attributed to the unique and robust microstructures and synergetic effect between MoS2 and SnO2.

        One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesis of Sulfur-Doped SnO2 Nanoparticles and their Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties

        Sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles with ultrafine sizes have been successfully prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method. The obtained samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric (TG), analyzer UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The experimental results indicate that the doping level of sulfur element as well as the bandgaps of SnO2 can be controlled to a certain extent by varying the amount of L-cysteine (L-cys). When evaluated as photocatalysts in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light region, the resultant sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles demonstrate obviously enhanced photocatalytic activities due to the markedly improved visible light response and effective separation of the photo-generated electron–hole pairs.

        Time-domain simulations of transient response in LiFePO4 cathode lithium ion batteries

        The time domain transients of batteries comprised of LiFePO4 cathode material exhibit large nonlinearity with the increasing discharging rates. Hence, the calculated overpotential transients match the experimental determined well only when the discharging current is low enough. The results of electrochemical impedance spectra at different OCV level indicate that the change of the parameters of equivalent circuit or even the circuit architecture are probably responsible for the large discrepancy between the predicted and the measured transient profiles. By taking the change of equivalent circuit model at high discharging current into consideration, we successfully simulate the time domain transients of polarization within the entire discharging current range. Also with the help of circuit analysis, the contribution of the ohmic resistance, charge transfer impedance and solid-state diffusion impedance to total polarization has been differentiated as a function of discharging time.

        Evaluation of the volatile profile of wax apple (Syzygium samarangense) wines fermented with different commercial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains

        The effect of four commercial Saccharomycescerevisiae strains (D254, VIC, BV818, and RV100) on thevolatile profile of wax apple (Syzygium samarangense)wine was investigated in this study. Alcohols and esterswere the most two abundant groups of identified volatilesin wax apple wines. However, different S. cerevisiaestrains possess various capacities in releasing/synthesizingvolatiles with varied mRNA levels of genes involved involatiles metabolism during wax apple wine fermentation. VIC, which yielded the highest total concentration ofvolatiles and largest number of volatiles with odor activityvalue (OAV)[1, could be used as a starter culture toproduce wax apple wine characterized with intense aroma. D254 and RV100, which produced the greatest variety ofvolatiles and scored the highest in global aroma,respectively, could be used to enhance the wine complexity. Four wax apple wines could be differentiated by theirmain volatile compounds.

        Grain Morphology and Orientation Effect on the High‑Temperature Tensile Behavior of Directionally Solidified Magnesium Alloy

        Columnar-structured Mg97.27Zn2.54Y0.19alloy with the preferred growth direction of ⟨22̄45⟩ and ⟨12̄33⟩, andMg98.01Zn1.84Y0.13Zr0.03alloy with the preferred growth direction of ⟨11̄20⟩ were prepared using the directional solidificationtechnique and then tensile tested at 250–300 °C. The results showed that the Mg97.27Zn2.54Y0.19alloy with columnar dendriticstructure experienced a significant deformation strengthening period when stretched at 250 °C, and a typical dynamicrecrystallization stage at 300 °C, which were mainly accounted for its well-developed secondary dendrites, a large numberof branch-shaped second phases distributed in the longitudinal grain boundary, and less granular second phases existingin the crystal. While in the whole test temperature range (250–300 °C), the stress–strain curves of Mg98.01Zn1.84Y0.13Zr0.03alloys with cellular dendritic crystals showed a steady deformation state because of the second phases with strip distributingin the longitudinal grain boundary, which was induced by a balance between the deformation strengthening and the dynamicrecrystallization. Especially at 300 °C, this steady deformation state existed in the strain of 5.6%–36%. The good uniformplastic deformation was closely related to the small misorientations between columnar grains, the associated movement ofgrains by grain boundary slipping, and the less percentage of dynamically recrystallized grains which could do harm to theorientation continuity of the columnar crystals.

        Quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker—a rational method for the internal quality of Chinese herbal medicine

        In order to achieve the comprehensive quality control of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), the conventional practice of selecting a single marker for testing has been gradually replaced by the determination of multiple active components based on the characteristics of the synergistic interaction of CHM and applicability of sophisticated analytical techniques. However, with a huge number of CHM in the market and more complex preparations, the limited availability of various standard substances for quantitative analysis has been a major bottleneck in realizing the goal. To overcome these uprising problems, quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker (QAMS) was proposed and accepted as a new method to reflect the internal quality of CHM. In this review, the current knowledge about QAMS is systematically summarized, including the general content of QAMS, current status, and general procedure. Additionally, speculation is proposed about the future applications of QAMS approaches in the modernization and standardization of CHM.

        Organizations today are facing an increasingly global and competitive marketplace, and so they, as well as their managers must be adaptable to survive. As strategic changes become more frequent, managers face a higher level of wicertainty and complety in the workplace. These factors combined suggest that managers will need to proactively seek out feedback to adequately adapt and perform. However, discussions about what factors and how they affect managers' feedback-seeking behavior in Chinese context are rare. In this study, we investigate the intrinsic mechanisms of how the indigenous Chinese construct supervisor-subordinate guanxi influences managers' feedback-seeking behavior. Supervisor-Subordinate guanxi is defined as a dyadic, particular and sentimental tie that has potential of facilitating favor exchanges between the parties connected by the tie. This concept includes affective attachment, personal-life inclusion, and deference to supervisor. Although studies have suggested that Chinese supervisors have extensive control over resources and can impact employees' lives in various ways, evidence regarding the intermediate psychological processes that would explain how and why supervisor-subordinate guanxi affects managers' feedback-seeking behavior remains inconclusive and underdeveloped' Drawing from two theoretical perspectives in the feedback seeking literature, the efficiency-oriented perspective and impression-management perspective, we examine the mediation effects of managers' performance-enhancement expectations and impression-management expectations. Further, consistent with recent calls for the examination of moderators for feedback seeking behavior, political skill was included so we could examine its interplay with supervisor subordinate guanxi on managers' feedback-seeking behavior. Analyses based on dyad samples in family business from Guangdong province show that: (1) supervisor subordinate guanxi is positively related to managers' feedback-seeking behavior; (2) performance-enhancement expectations and impression-management expectations partially mediated supervisor-subordinate guanxi' s influence on managers' feedback-seeking behavior; (3) p이1tical skill positively moderated the relationships between supervisor-subor이nate guanxi and managers' feedback-seeking behavior in such a way that the relationships were stronger for individuals higher than lower in political skill. Our research contributes to the feedback seeking literature by answering how and why supervisor-subordinate guanxi is related to managers' feedback-seeking behabvior in Chinese context. Managerial implications and limitations of the study are discussed.

        Sex difference of autosomal alleles in populations of European and African descent

        In the present study, we aimed to report the individual sex-different genetic markers across autosomes in European- and African-origin populations. A total of 8400 females and 8081 males in 19 independent cohorts were genotyped across genomes using Illumina or Affymetrix arrays. The allele frequencies were compared between females and males in nine non-clean cohorts (with some human disease traits) using genome-wide logistic regression and then the nominally significant associations were replicated across 10 clean cohorts (without disease traits). Meta-analysis was performed to derive the combined p values across all cohorts. We found 13 markers that were genome-wide significant (p B 5 9 10-8) between females and males in the meta-analysis of all cohorts of European descent, including rs7740449 at SYNE1, rs7531151 at PLD5, rs697455 at PPP1R12B, rs6745746 at LOC100128413, rs17000079 at PARM1, rs11948070 at PDE4D, rs7801825 at INSIG1, rs9551642 at MTUS2, rs2932174 at TPTE2, rs1961597 at SALL3, rs4117529 at METTL4, rs6021473 at SALL4 and rs6092466 at RAE1, and one marker, i.e., rs10145208 at PCNX, that was genomewide significant in the meta-analysis of all cohorts of African descent. The most robust finding was rs7740449 at SYNE1, next to ESR1. We conclude that there are many sex-different markers on autosomes. These markers may be informative in differentiating females and males.
