<P>Ephedrae Herba (EH) is obtained by drying the stems of Ephedra sinica Stapf (family Ephedraceae). EH has been used clinically to treat colds and to reduce edema in skin. The effects of EH on melanogenesis were studied in B16 murine melanocytes. The tyrosinase activity and melanin content were measured after incubation with EH. Both reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and cDNA microarray analysis were used to study the mechanism of EH action. EH decreased tyrosinase activity and melanin content in a dose-dependent manner. EH decreased microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase gene expression. These effects were controlled by MITF-mediated regulation of tyrosinase gene expression. EH also altered the expression of about 100 other genes. These results suggest that EH may be used clinically to treat freckles and liver spots. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

<P>Siberian ginseng, the root and stem bark of Acanthopanax senticosus Harms, has been used as a tonic and adaptogen to strengthen qi in traditional Korean medicine. The neuroprotective effects of water extracts of A. senticosus (ASW) were investigated in transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo, 90 min occlusion, 24 h reperfusion) of Sprague-Dawley rats. The infarct volume was significantly reduced by 36.6% after the peritoneal injection of ASW (100 mg[sol ]kg) compared with the control. In the immunohistochemical study, ASW markedly inhibited both cyclooxygenase-2 and OX-42 expressions in the penumbral region at 24 h after MCAo. These results suggest that A. senticosus has a neuroprotective effect by inhibiting inflammation and microglial activation in brain ischaemia. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

<P>Angelicae Gigantis Radix (AGR) is one of the most widely used herbal medications. AGR is the dried root of Angelica gigas Nakai (Umbelliferae), which is known as Korean angelica. This study investigated the effects of AGR on osteoclast formation using primary bone marrow cells. TNF-&agr; treatment increased tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (Trap) positive cells and Trap activity in bone marrow cells. However, AGR significantly decreased both TNF-&agr;-induced Trap positive cells and Trap activity. RT-PCR analyses revealed that AGR decreased mRNA levels of Trap and matrix metalloproteinase-9 in TNF-&agr;-treated bone marrow cells. In addition, AGR decreased TNF-&agr;-induced activation of NF-&kgr;B. These results suggest that AGR has an inhibitory effect on the formation of osteoclasts and its effect is partially related to the NF-&kgr;B pathway. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

뇌하수체전엽에서 분비된 성장호르몬의 작용으로 성장이 촉진된다는 것이 지금까지의 정설이고, 최근 그 외 부갑상선 호르몬, 성호르몬, 국소호르몬 등이 관련되어 있다는 연구보고가 있다. 목적 : 성장촉진 효능이 있는 구척추출물의 작용기전 중 성장호르몬 분비에 대한 영향을 밝히기 위해 본 실험이 구상되었다. 방법 : 성장기 흰쥐에게 구척추출물을 투여하고 성장촉진 효과를 나타낸 농도에서, 투여시간에 따른 혈중 성장호르몬의 변화를 측정하였다. 결과 : 구척 투여전 20분에서 투여후 60분까지 총 80분간의 혈중 성장호르몬 변화를 측정한 결과, 투여후 5분에서 혈중 성장호르몬이 약간 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 5분후의 혈중 성장호르몬의 양을 구척추출물 10 mg/kg과 100 mg/kg의 농도별로 투여한 후 측정하였으나 성장호르몬의 증가를 관찰할 수 없었다. 결론 : 구척은 유의한 성장촉진작용을 나타내지만, 혈중 성장호르몬의 양을 증가시키지는 않았다. 따라서 구척의 성장촉진 효능에 대한 작용기전에 성장호르몬 분비촉진기전은 없는 것으로 사료된다.

We have developed shell type 765kV transformers for generator step-up. Our research and development for shell type 765kV transformers have been continued since 1990. The shell type 765kV transformers of single phase 3MVA for step-up and 500MVA for power transmission were developed in Dec. 1992 and Oct. 1996, respectively. 204MVA 765kV transformer for generator step-up was also developed with the basis of technique and experience to the present. Total 12 phases of 204MVA 765kV transformers will be delivered at Tangjin thermal power plant by 2006. This paper describes electrical and structural features of the shell type 204MVA 765kV transformer.

Hyundai motor company has designed a above 50kW-class PEMFC stack for Fuelcell vehicle based on SUV. Hyundai increased the power density of the stack through the optimized flowfield of bipolar plate, manifold structure, and improvement of sealing, etc. Also, Gas to Gas humidifier was adopted in fuelcell system to reduce the system humidification load, it had been proven by short stack test. Components of stack, bilpolar plate, manifold, were analyzed through the computer simulation, so temperature and pressure distribution in the components and system were improved. This stack tested in Bread Board which was organized similar to real vehicle system.
