Mental and Emotional Exhaustion among Academicians during Online Distance Learning: An Empirical Study from Malaysia

Abdul Kadir OTHMAN(Abdul Kadir OTHMAN ),Jaafar PYEMAN(Jaafar PYEMAN ),Azuati MAHMUD(Azuati MAHMUD ),Siti Nooraini MOHD TOBI(Siti Nooraini MOHD TOBI ),Zahariah SAHUDIN(Zahariah SAHUDIN ) 한국유통과학회 2023 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.10 No.2

The purpose of this study is to discover the possible solutions for the problem faced by academicians during online learning by means of employing qualitative and quantitative approaches. Using a qualitative approach, selected academicians were interviewed, and their feedback was transcribed and used to develop the survey instrument. The quantitative research design was later used to determine the most plausible solutions for the problem that could be obtained and implemented by distributing the questionnaire to academicians at a public university. Multiple regression analysis results indicate that work-life conflict and lack of support are the main contributors to academicians’ mental and emotional health issues. The study’s major findings help higher education institutions craft appropriate strategies to enhance the effectiveness of online teaching and learning by providing the necessary support to the academicians. The study’s findings suggest that academicians should separate work and family requirements to concentrate on their job. Furthermore, the immediate supervisor must be considerate in determining the number of tasks, the deadlines, and the assistance required to complete the task. Lastly, academicians must equip themselves with emotional intelligence to cope with stressors.

Development and Validation of ESI iDART Instrument Measuring Organizational Values: An Empirical Study in Malaysia

Abdul Kadir OTHMAN(Abdul Kadir OTHMAN ),Mizan HITAM(Mizan HITAM ),Zuhaina ZAKARIA(Zuhaina ZAKARIA ),Mohd Rafizi RAHMAD(Mohd Rafizi RAHMAD ),Zuraidah MOHD SANUSI(Zuraidah MOHD SANUSI ) 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.9

The purpose of this paper is to explain the process of developing and validating the instrument to measure the university’s organizational core values and sub-values known as ESI iDART. The three core values are excellence, synergy, and integrity, while the five sub-values comprise knowledge, discipline, trustworthiness, diligence, and responsibility that all staff should understand and practice. These values must be measured to examine the extent to which the staff has practiced them in their work life. With regard to methodology, the research instrument used in the study was developed using a focus group study involving 39 university staff from various departments and campuses. The instrument was later refined and validated by a group of experts from the university. In the main study, the instrument was distributed to all 17,969 university staff from all over the country. After one month, a total of 11,688 university staff participated in the survey indicating a 66% response rate. Using descriptive analysis, reliability analysis, and ANOVA, the results indicate that instrument is considered valid and reliable to be used. The major findings from the study show that organizational values increase over time. Some theoretical and managerial implications are also discussed.

A randomized, double-blind study comparing multiple doses of Channa striatus supplementation for knee osteoarthritis

        Abdul Kadir Azidah,Abdul Kadir Arifah,A. H. Roslida,Abdul Manan Mat Jais,Julia Omar,Abdul Nawfar Sadagatullah,Azlina Ishak,Norhayati Mohd. Noor,Ahmad Tarmizi Musa 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2017 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.17 No.4

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the leading cause of chronic disability at older age. Channa striatus (CS) is a freshwater fish that is traditionally valued for its medicinal properties in promoting wound healing and reducing post-operative pain. This study evaluate the efficacy of different doses of oral Channa striatus extract on primary knee osteoarthritis patients. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 3-arm trial was conducted comparing oral CS extract 1000 mg/day or 500 mg/day and placebo among knee OA patients for a 6-month intervention period. The main outcome measures were Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), analgesic scores and serum cartilage oligomeric matric protein (COMP). Laboratory-based blood tests were used as safety measures. A total of 120 patients were randomized, and 112 patients were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. Significant reductions in WOMAC stiffness and function scores were achieved at month 6 in CS 1000 mg/day and CS 500 mg/day compared to placebo groups (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between the groups in terms of analgesic scores, serum COMP and biochemical parameters. No serious adverse events were reported in the study. In conclusion, both doses of CS showed similar efficacy and were more effective than the placebo in treating the symptoms of knee OA.

Determinants of Global Korea Scholarship students’ word-of-mouth about Korea

Kadir Jun Ayhan,Moamen Gouda 서울대학교 교육연구소 2021 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.22 No.1

International student-mobility programs are one of the core programs countries employ as part of their public diplomacy portfolio. Policymakers assume that sponsored foreign students would develop positive beliefs about and emotions towards the host country, which in turn would lead to favorable behavior towards it. However, evaluations of such programs from a public diplomacy perspective are rare and Western-centric. In this paper, we analyze how Global Korea Scholarship students’ cognitive and affective evaluations of Korea influence their country image and word-of-mouth about Korea; i.e., in how they voluntarily share their experiences in Korea with others. We use variance-based partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze the data obtained from surveying 1107 scholarship holding foreign students. Our findings suggest that students evaluate Korea most positively in terms of its culture and nature, while their evaluations are not as positive in terms of the integrity and values of the country. For positive word-of-mouth, affection towards Korea plays the most significant role, while for negative word-of-mouth, the students’ beliefs about the country’s integrity and values had the most influence. Our findings help identify the strengths and weaknesses in Korea’s country image which can, in turn, inform and shape policies accordingly.

Closed Drainage versus Non-Drainage for Single-Level Lumbar Disc Surgery: Relationship between Epidural Hematoma and Fibrosis

Kadir Kotil 대한척추외과학회 2016 Asian Spine Journal Vol.10 No.6

Study Design: A prospective clinical series with prospectively collected data. Purpose: The efficacy of using closed suction drains (CSD) after single-level lumbar disc surgery was evaluated. Postoperative CSD are regularly fitted to prevent postoperative epidural hematomas (EH) after multilevel lumbar decompression, although it remains unclear whether CSD also reduces postoperative EH following single-level lumbar disc surgery. Overview of Literature: Few articles have addressed the clinical outcome in patients with single-level lumbar disc disease who were treated by two different operative methods (with and without drainage). Methods: Between 2012 and 2014, 115 patients with a single level discectomy underwent two surgical procedures: with CSD (group A, 60 cases) and without CSD (group B, 55 cases). There were no significant differences in age, sex, segment level, herniation type, or disease duration between the groups. Wound infection, EH, and epidural fibrosis (EF) were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging. Pain intensity was evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI). Reduction in analgesic treatment and patient satisfaction were also recorded. Results: The overall rate of postoperative EH was 5% and 16.3% in group A and B, respectively, whereas the rate of postoperative EF was 11.6% in group A and 21.8% in group B. The postoperative VAS score was 0.32 (standard deviation [SD], 0.45) for group A and 2.62 (SD, 06.9) for group B, whereas ODI was 9.11 (SD, 0.68) and 8.23 (SD, 0.78) for group A and and group B, respectively, with no significant differences observed. Conclusions: In patients operated on by unilateral, single-level lumbar disc surgery, the use of suction CSD into the operation site results in lower levels of EH and EF radiologically, thereby providing a better clinical outcome.

Will Evers and Lakomski be able to find leadership’s Holy Grail?

Kadir Beycioglu 한국교육개발원 2012 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.9 No.2

In this paper I intend to have a critical look at the theory development issues in the field of educational administration and leadership with a special emphasis on Colin Evers and Gabriel Lakomski’s naturalistic direction. As Evers and Lakomski state, the traditional science of educational administration, namely logical empiricist models of the past, have come to cause alternatives such as subjectivism and critical theory. Naturalistic coherentism is one of the post traditional approaches in the field of educational leadership. Reducing the philosophy/epistemology or the humane science of educational administration and leadership to natural science is the main criticism that naturalism has encountered. Although Evers and Lakomski insist that modern cognitive science has expanded our ability to understand human practice, the field of educational administration and leadership needs more than they supposed.

Evaluation of energy response of space steel frames subjected to seismic loads

Kadir Ozakgul 국제구조공학회 2015 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.54 No.4

In this paper, seismic energy response of inelastic steel structures under earthquake excitations is investigated. For this purpose, a numerical procedure based on nonlinear dynamic analysis is developed by considering material, geometric and connection nonlinearities. Material nonlinearity is modeled by the inversion of Ramberg-Osgood equation. Nonlinearity caused by the interaction between the axial force and bending moment is also defined considering stability functions, while the geometric nonlinearity caused by axial forces is described using geometric stiffness matrix. Cyclic behaviour of steel connections is taken into account by employing independent hardening model. Dynamic equation of motion is solved by Newmark's constant acceleration method in the time history domain. Energy response analysis of space frames is performed by using this proposed numerical method. Finally, for the first time, the distribution of the different energy types versus time at the duration of the earthquake ground motion is obtained where in addition error analysis for the numerical solutions is carried out and plotted depending on the relative error calculated as a function of energy balance versus time.

An Extremely Giant Lumbar Schwannoma: New Classification (Kotil) and Mini-Open Microsurgical Resection

Kadir Kotil 대한척추외과학회 2014 Asian Spine Journal Vol.8 No.4

Purely extradural giant lumbar schwannomas are rare lesions. Classification of these tumors is performed according to the sizes and spills and is named the modified Sridhar’s classification. The management of these tumors has traditionally been performed by combined antero-posterior large or two-stage exposures. This combined exposure has many disadvantages. Recent reports have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of removal of these tumors using mini-open micro surgical resection for the schwannomas, but the safety and efficacy have not been established for extremely large giant tumors. We report a case of a giant L4 dumb-bell schwannoma successfully resected through a mini-open micro surgical resection. These neoplasms can be safely and effectively treated with mini-open techniques. Reduction in blood loss, hospitalization, and tissue disruption may be potential benefits of this approach. We discuss the technical details of this surgical approach along with the limitations and possible complications. In addition, this study is included in the current schwannoma (Kotil) classification.
