( Jungsil Lee ),( Yeon Wook Kim ),( Jaeyoung Cho ),( Hansol Choi ),( Hyunwoo Lee ),( Chul Gyu Yoo ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1
A 54-year-old never-smoker woman visited pulmonary outpatient clinic of Seoul National University Hospital due to an abnormal chest x-ray finding on routine check. She denied dyspnea, fever, chills, cough, hemoptysis or loss of weight. CAT scan of chest showed ill-defined GGO and patchy consolidation in both lower lobes (BLL). Bronchoalveolar lavage was done and showed many lymphocytes, epithelial cells, and alveolar macrophages; oil-red O staining revealed some lipid-laden macrophages. Although she denied history of oil ingestion, the presumptive diagnosis of lipoid pneumonia was made. Upon initial follow-up after 1 month, there was no change on the chest X-ray. The low-dose CAT scan was followed-up 3 months later, which showed slightly increased consolidation on left lower lobe (LLL), but no significant interval change of GGO lesion on BLL. The patient was admitted to go through percutaneous needle biopsy of the LLL lesion. The pathologic result revealed atypical lymphohistiocytic in filtration, consistent with malignant lymphoma. final diagnosis was extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (MALT). She has received 6 cycles of R-CVP chemotherapy, resulting in complete remission.

A 59-year-old man presented with acute dyspnea following sudden productive cough and expectoration of a full cup of “blood-tinged” sputum. He had been diagnosed with hepatitis B virus.related hepatocellular carcinoma and had received transarterial chemoembolization 5 years ago for a 20-cm hepatic mass; he denied any history of hematemesis and the last esophagogastroduodenoscopy from a year ago showed absence of varix. Chest computed tomography (CT) with angiography showed new appearance of right basal lung consolidation but no bleeding focus. Despite the use of systemic antibiotics, the patient developed respiratory failure on day 7 of hospitalization. After intubation, a massive amount of brown sputum with anchovy-paste-like consistency was suctioned via the endotracheal tube. Bronchoscopic toileting was performed and the patient was extubated. In the ward, he continued to expectorate the brown sputum. On day 25 of hospitalization, a repeat CT scan showed simultaneous disappearance of the pneumonic consolidation and the necrotic fluid within the hepatic mass, suggesting the presence of a fistula. He has continued to receive systemic antibiotics, sorafenib, and entecavir, and follow up by respiratory and hepato-oncology specialists.

Blood vessel is mainly composed of extracellular matrix proteins such as elastin and collagen. Elastic fibers composed of elastin and other proteins are required for normal functions of the cardiovascular system, because they provide the elasticity. Mutation of elastin, fibulin-4, or lysyl oxidase gene may lead to critical diseases such as cutis laxa, supravalvular aortic stenosis, and thoracic aortic aneurysm. Genetically modified mice without elastin (Eln-/-), fibulin-4 (Fbln4-/-), or lysyl oxidase (Lox-/-) genes die perinatally with severe cardiovascular defects including aortic stenosis and aneurysm. Therefore, they can be good models to study human vascular diseases. This talk recapitulates the vascular remodeling in health and disease, presenting the biomechanics of the aortas, microstructure, protein amount, gene expression, and blood pressure in Eln-/-, Fbln4-/-, and Lox-/- mice.
Aura of Glocal Motherhood in Park Soo Keun’s Paintings
Jungsil Jenny LEE 계명대학교 한국학연구원 2021 Acta Koreana Vol.24 No.2
Park Soo Keun (朴壽根 Pak Sugŭn, 1914-1965) was a modern artist active in Korea from the later Japanese colonial period of the early 1930s to the mid- 1960s. Despite the poverty and adversity it caused him, Park persisted in producing paintings of ordinary people, including the poor, that he observed in his everyday life. His use of local color and the distinctive textures of his multilayered oil pigments led to his posthumous recognition by Korean critics and American art collectors as one of the most “Korean” artists. Park’s paintings often present women as the main subjects. His interest in the rediscovery and restoration of Sin Saimdang 申師任堂 (1504-1551), who emerged in the 1960s as a significant female icon with the traits of a wise mother, talented artist, and learned noblewoman, is epitomized in his visual depiction of female figures. Park’s silent, serious representations of Korean mothers, symbolizing suffering and self-sacrifice for the sake of the country’s next generation, evoke nationalistic sentiments, admiration, memories, and nostalgia. Through investigating the construction and representation of such a Korean female identity in the social and cultural context of Park’s time, this study elucidates the current enthusiastic reception of Park’s paintings in Korea and the growing international recognition of a distinctive Korean style in studies of modern Korean art.
