Inertio-elastic flow instabilities in a 90° bent microchannel

<▼1><▼1><P>We report the novel inertio-elastic flow instability in dilute polymer solutions for a microchannel having a 90° bent geometry.</P></▼1><▼2><P>Biological samples having viscoelastic properties are frequently tested using microfluidic devices. In addition, viscoelastic fluids such as polymer solutions have been used as a suspending medium to spatially focus particles in microchannels. The occurrence of flow instability even at low Reynolds number is a unique property of viscoelastic fluids. In this study, we report the instability in viscoelastic flow for a channel having a 90° bent geometry, which is a characteristic of many microfluidic devices. Interestingly, we observed that the flow instability in aqueous poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solution occurs when the concentration of PEO is as low as 50 ppm. We systematically investigated the effects of the polymer concentration, flow rate, and elasticity number on the flow instability. The results show that the flow is stabilized in shear-thinning fluids, whereas the flow instability is amplified when both elastic and inertial effects are pronounced. We believe that this study is useful to design microfluidic devices such as cell-deformability measurement devices based on viscoelastic particle focusing.</P></▼2></▼1>

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION MONITORING SYSTEM USING IR MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY

Environmental pollution monitoring has been a very important concern in global community as the global environment goes from bad to worse by industrialization. In this paper, we suggest a technology applicable to real-time monitoring for gas-phase or liquid-phase contamination. This technique is based on IR molecular spectroscopy. We think that it is very effective in determining a wide variety of contamination materials in water purification including organic compounds harmful to the human body. In addition, we expect that this technique is also applicable to air-pollution detection.

Study purposes were to evaluate ultrasonographic characteristics of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) and quantitate bladder tumor size in dogs. Heterogeneous mass, wall involvement, and broad-based attachment were significantly associated with TCC, but not prominently the trigone region. Mass size evaluation revealed a significant correlation between progressive disease (PD) in TCC patients with piroxicam therapy. Largest diameter of target lesion/body weight (cm/kg) ratio showed a high mean value in PD. A value > 0.3 was associated with PD with 83% sensitivity and 66% specificity. The results suggest that ultrasonography can provide evidence for diagnosing and predicting a prognosis for TCC.

Hydrolysis of BDNPP by dinuclear metal complexes

두 이핵착물인 Zn-1와 Cu-l를 합성하여 BDNPP를 가수분해하는 촉매로서의 효율성을 조사했다. Zn-1 와 Cu-l에 의한 pH 7, 34℃에서 측정한 일차 반응속도는 각각 8.2×10^(-6)s^(-1)와 1.0×10^(-4) s^(-1)이다. Cu-2는 촉매가 없는 반응에 비해 약 10^(5)배의 속도가 증가한 것이다. 그러나 이와 상응하는 단핵 착물인 Zn-3와 Cu-4의 반응성이 이와 유사한 속도 증가를 주는 것으로 미루어 BDNPP를 가수분해하는 데 있어 각 이핵착물에 존재하는 두 금속이온들 사이의 협동적 반응성은 거의 없다고 볼 수 있다. Two binuclear metal complexes, Zn-1 and Cu-l have been synthesized and their catalytic efficiency in hydrolyzing BDNPP has been investigated. The first order rate constant for the hydrolysis of BDNPP to NPP by Zn-1 and Cu-2 complexes are 8.2×10^(-6)s^(-1) and 1.0×10^(-4)s^(-1) respectiviey at pH 7, 34.℃. There is ca 10^(5) fold rate enhancement over the uncatalyzed reaction in BDNPP hydrolysis by Cu-2 complex. However, the corresponding mononuclear metal complexes, Zn-3 and Cu-4 were as efficient as Zn-1 and Cu-2 in hydrolyzing BDNPP, indicating that there are little cooperative interactions between two metal ions in each metal complexes.

이핵 착물을 형성할 수 있는 리간드인 1, 2 및 3을 합성했다. 단핵착물 리간드인 [12]aneN _(3) 와 [9]aneN_(3)를 선택적으로 protection하여 tricyclic orthoamide 1A와 2A를 얻고 이를 1,3-dibromopropane 또는 1,3 dibromopropanol 과 적절한 조건에서 반응시켜 bicyclic amidinium salts 1B, 2B, 및 3B를 얻은 뒤 염기로 처리하여 원하는 생성물 I, 2, 3을 얻었다. <P>The E6 and E7 oncoproteins of human papilloma virus (HPV) type 16 have been known to cooperatively induce the immortalization and transformation of primary keratinocytes. We established an E7 transgenic mouse model to screen HPV-related biomakers using the omics approach. The methods used to identify HPV-modulated factors were genomics analysis by microarray using the Affymetrix 430 2.0 array to screen E7-modulated genes, and proteomics analysis using nano-LC-ESI-MS/MS to screen E7-modulated proteins with the lung tissue of E7 transgenic mice. According to omics data, cyclin B1, cyclin E2, topoisomerase IIα, calnexin, activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule CD166, actinin α1, diaphorase 1, gelsolin, platelet glycoprotein, and annexin A2 and A4 were up-regulated in the E7-Tg mice, while proteoglycan 4, sarcolipin, titin, vimentin, drep 1, troponin and cofilin-1 were down-regulated. We further confirmed the significance of differences between the expression levels of the selected factors in E7-Tg and non-Tg mice by real-time PCR. Genes related to cancer cell adhesion, cell cycle and migration, proliferation and apoptosis, as well as to the intermediate filament network and to endoplasmic reticulum proteins, were selected. Taken together, the results suggest that the E7 oncogene modulates the expression levels of cell cycle-related (cyclin B1, cyclin E2) and cell adhesion- and migration-related (actinin α1, CD166) factors, which may play important roles in cellular transformation in cancer. In addition, the solubilization of the rigid intermediate filament network by specific proteolysis mediated via up-regulating gelsolin and down-regulating cofilin-1, as well as increased levels of endoplasmic reticulum protein calnexin with chaperone functions, might also be involved in E7-lung epithelial cells.</P>
