        칼빈은 거대한 폭포, 원시림, 마력적인 힘, 거대한 산 히말라야로부터 직접 내려오는 어떤 것 절대적으로 중국적이며, 경이스럽고, 신화적인 그 어떤 것이라고 말할 수 있을 것 같네; 1922년 괴팅엔(Go¨ttingen) 대학교에서 여름 학기 강의를 칼빈의 신학으로 준비하면서 - 사실상 칼 바르트의 괴팅엔 대학에서의 첫 번째 임무 중 하나는 개혁자들의 신학에 대한 강의를 준비하는 것이었다 - 그의 친구 에드아르드 투루나이젠(Eduard Thurneysen)에게 쓴 편지의 일부이다. 이러한 사실적이며, 프란쯔 카프카적인 서술이 칼빈에 대해 항거할 수 없는 엄청난 충격에 대한 서술로 다음과 같이 이어지고 있다. “나는 그것을 적절하게 제시하여 언급하는 것은 고사하고, 심지어 이러한 현상을 소화해 낼 수 있는 수단, 흡입관을 전혀 가지고 있지 못하고 있네. 내가 받아들은 것은 단지 가늘고 작은 개울물일 뿐이고, 그때 내가 다시 내보낼 수 있는 것은 단지 이 작은 개울물 중에서도 훨씬 더 가늘어진 추출물일 뿐이네, 어쨌든 나는 즐겁고 그리고 유익하게 나의 생애의 남은 세월들을 칼빈과 함께 보내고 헌신 할 수 있을 것 같네” 칼 바르트 이러한 천명에 대한 결실은 「칼빈의 신학」 (Die Thologie Calvins) 이라는 552 페이지의 책으로 출간되었다. 필자는 본고에서 신 칼빈주의자로서의 칼빈학자이며 또한 기독론 지향적인 칼빈의 해석학자로서의 칼 바르트의 신학에 대하여 칼빈과의 첫 번째 조우(遭遇)로부터 시작하여, 칼빈의 신학에 대한 동의하는 점과 동의하지 못하는 점을 중요한 모티프로 설정하여 칼 바르트 신학의 신학적 방법론(Theologische Methode), 칼 바르트의 성경원리(Schriftprinzip) 그리고 선택교리(Doctrine of Election)에 대하여 그의 대표적 저작인 「교회 교의학」(Kirchliche Dogmatik)을 중심으로 논구했다. 결국 칼 바르트는 1959년 칼빈에 대하여 마르틴 루터와는 달리 칼빈은 천재는 아니었으나 의식있는 해석자였으며 완고하나 집요한 사상가였고, 동시에 교회에서의 그리스도인의 삶의 실천에 지칠줄 모르는 관심을 지닌 신학자요, 훌륭한 선생이었다고 평가하면서 그리스도인들과 신학자들은 칼빈의 「기독교 강요」에 대한 진지한 학습자가 되어야 하며 진리에 대한 추구에 자신의눈과 귀를 사용하려는 지대한 관심 속에서 칼빈주의자(Calvinist)가 될 수 있었다고 바르트는 고백하고 있다.

        Practice of causal inference with the propensity of being zero or one: assessing the effect of arbitrary cutoffs of propensity scores

        Causal inference methodologies have been developed for the past decade to estimate the unconfounded effect of an exposure under several key assumptions. These assumptions include, but are not limited to, the stable unit treatment value assumption, the strong ignorability of treatment assignment assumption, and the assumption that propensity scores be bounded away from zero and one (the positivity assumption). Of these assumptions, the first two have received much attention in the literature. Yet the positivity assumption has been recently discussed in only a few papers. Propensity scores of zero or one are indicative of deterministic exposure so that causal effects cannot be defined for these subjects. Therefore, these subjects need to be removed because no comparable comparison groups can be found for such subjects. In this paper, using currently available causal inference methods, we evaluate the effect of arbitrary cutoffs in the distribution of propensity scores and the impact of those decisions on bias and efficiency. We propose a tree-based method that performs well in terms of bias reduction when the definition of positivity is based on a single confounder. This tree-based method can be easily implemented using the statistical software program, R. R code for the studies is available online.

        In this paper, turbo codes are investigated in a slow frequency-hopped spread spectrum system with partial-band jamming and full-band thermal noise. The focus of this paper is the design and implementation of a modified turbo decoder for this model. Cases of known or unknown channel state and variable number of bits per hop are considered. Our approach is to exploit the memory of the channel by calculating channel state estimates for unknown parameters. Analytical bounds are derived and simulation is performed for coherent demodulation. The results drawn from this code are compared with a convolutional code.

      • Photocatalytic removal of dissolved metals using nanoparticle-coated zeolite media filters

        Storm water pollution has been the various concerns over the past decade. Decreasing the contamination levels of runoffs to the minimum accepted levels to protect the water quality of rivers, estuaries, streams, lakes, seas, and other bodies of waters have been the objectives of various storm water best management practices (BMP) implemented. BMPs has been augmented to existing water treatment facilities to provide additional resources for potable water usage. Novel filter materials are used to improve the performance of media filters and extend their capabilities to removing other pollutants such as organic/aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals. Among the novel materials being considered are photocatalyst nanoparticles coated into the sand media filter. Photocatalysts have been applied in the degradation of organic pollutants with the help of visible light irradiation. This paper describes the synthesis and use of nanoparticle–coated zeolite media filter to remove dissolved metals (Cu and Zn). Catalyst surface analysis revealed that the Cu and Zn were chemically adsorbed, and were transformed into its corresponding elemental forms.

      • Dynamics of Supercoiled and Relaxed pTZ18U Plasmids Probed with a Long-Lifetime Metal-Ligand Complex

        $[Ru(bpy)_2(dppz)]^2+$ (bpy=2,2'-bipyfidine, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuBD), a long-lifetime metal-ligand complex, displays favorable photophysical properties. These include long lifetime, polarized emission, but no significant fluorescence from the complex that is not bound to DNA. To show the usefulness of this luminophore (RuBD) for probing the bending and torsional dynamics of nucleic acids, its intensity and anisotropy decays when intercalated into supercoiled and relaxed pTZ18U plasmids were examined using frequency-domain fluorometry with a blue light-emitting diode (LED) as the modulated light source. The mean lifetimes for the supercoiled plasmids (< $\tau$ >=148 ns) were somewhat shorter than those for the relaxed plasmids (< $\tau$ >=160 ns). This suggests that the relaxed plasmids were shielded more efficiently from water. The anisotropy decay data also showed somewhat shorter slow rotational correlation times for supercoiled plasmids (288 ns) than for the relaxed plasmids (355 ns). The presence of two rotational correlation times suggests that RuBD reveals both the bending and torsional motions of the plasmids. These results indicate that RuBD can be useful for studying both the bending and torsional dynamics of mucleic acids.

        A Study of 100 tonf Tensile Load for SMART Mooring Line Monitoring System Considering Polymer Fiber Creep Characteristics

        Mooring systems are among the most important elements employed to control the motion of floating offshore structures on the sea. Considering the use of polymer material, a new method is proposed to address the creep characteristics rather than the method of using a tension load cell for measuring the tension of the mooring line. This study uses a synthetic mooring rope made from a polymer material, which usually consists of three parts: center, eye, and splice, and which makes a joint for two successive ropes. We integrate the optical sensor into the synthetic mooring ropes to measure the rope tension. The different structure of the mooring line in the longitudinal direction can be used to measure the loads with the entire mooring configuration in series, which can be defined as SMART (Smart Mooring and Riser Truncation) mooring. To determine the characteristics of the basic SMART mooring, a SMART mooring with a diameter of 3 mm made of three different polymer materials is observed to change the wavelength that responds as the length changes. By performing the longitudinal tension experiment using three different SMART moorings, it was confirmed that there were linear wavelength changes in the response characteristics of the 3-mm-diameter SMART moorings. A 54-mm-diameter SMART mooring is produced to measure the response of longitudinal tension on the center, eye, and splice of the mooring, and a longitudinal tension of 100 t in step-by-step applied for the Maintained Test and Fatigue Cycle Test is conducted. By performing a longitudinal tension experiment, wavelength changes were detected in the center, eye, and splice position of the SMART moorings. The results obtained from each part of the installed sensors indicated a different strain measurement depending on the position of the SMART moorings. The variation of the strain measurement with the position was more than twice the result of the difference measurement, while the applied external load increased step-by-step. It appears that there is a correlation with an externally generated longitudinal tensional force depending on the cross-sectional area of each part of the SMART mooring.
