Abstract

Ferroelectric polymers can effectively improve the photovoltaic performance of solar cells, inducing an electric field to promote the dissociation of electron-hole pairs, with the thus generated charges collected from open pores. Since such performance enhancement requires materials with a unique porous crystalline structure, we herein present a novel route to highly crystalline and porous poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) thin films utilizing a modified breath figure method based on spin coating. The key feature of the above method is the addition of small amounts of water to the acetone/P(VDF-TrFE) solution to produce porous ferroelectric thin films which have significantly higher crystallinity values than nanostructures or films prepared by other methods. Furthermore, n-Si / poly(3,4-ethylene dioxy thiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) hybrid solar cells with porous P(VDF-TrFE) interlayers are demonstrated to exhibit spontaneous polarization sufficient for increasing their open circuit voltages and fill factors. Finite-difference time-domain simulation reveals that the electric field due to the above spontaneous polarization increases the built-in electric field of the Schottky junction between n-Si and poly(3,4-ethylene dioxy thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) and reduces the reverse leakage current of the Schottky diode. Thus, the organic ferroelectric thin films with controlled porosity proposed in this study are well suited for a broad range of optoelectronic applications.

Highlights

High crystalline and self-assembled porous thin films are fabricated by simple and facile method.

The addition of small amounts of water to the acetone/P(VDF-TrFE) solution to produce porous ferroelectric thin films.

Photovoltaic parameters are enhanced due to spontaneous polarization of the P(VDF-TrFE) interlayer.

FDTD simulation reveals that the spontaneous polarization increases the built-in electric field of solar cells.

Graphical abstract

Self-assembled porous ferroelectric Poly(Vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) thin films are fabricated using a simple spin coating method. In this paper, we describe the synthesis of robust and non-fragile H∞ state feedback controllers for linear systems with affine parameter uncertainties, as well as a static state feedback controller with poly topic uncertainty. The sufficient condition of controller existence, the design method of robust and non-fragile H∞ static state feedback controller with fuzzy compensator, and the region of controllers that satisfies non-fragility are presented. We show that the resulting controller guarantees the asymptotic stability and disturbance attenuation of the closed loop system in spite of controller gain variations within a resulted poly topic region.

Trastuzumab is a monoclonal antibody used for the treatment of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 positive breast cancer. There is a little information in the literature regarding the safe use of trastuzumab in pregnancy, although some reports suggest an increased risk of oligohydramnios. We present a case of woman on trastuzumab therapy for breast cancer who became pregnant and delivered healthy live infant.

Background : Prone hip extension with knee flexion (PHEKF) is a commonly used exercise for strengthening the gluteal muscles. However, PHEKF exercise is associated with a risk of increased hamstring and erector spinae activities, lumbar rotation to compensate for gluteal muscle weakness. Therefore, PHEKEF with isometric hip 30 abduction was evaluated in this study using Thera-Band to reduce pelvic transverse rotation compensation and effectively strengthen gluteal muscle strength. Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the activity of the gluteus maximus (GMax), gluteus medius (GMed), erector spinae (ES) and hamstring (HAM) muscles and pelvic transverse rotation during PHEKF in three conditions. Methods : Fifteen healthy women participated in the study. The pelvic transverse rotation was measured using a smart phone-based measurement tool. The surface electromyography was attached the GMax, GMed, ES and HAM muscles. Then, the maximum voluntary isometric contraction was measured. The PHEKF exercise was performed in three different conditions (PHEKF, PHEKF with 30º hip abduction, and PHEKF with 30º isometric hip abduction [IHA]) by randomly. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA was performed to determine the difference in pelvic transverse rotation angle and muscle activity between the condition. Results : The GMax and GMed amplitudes were highest in PHEKF with 30° IHA, followed by 30º and 0° hip abduction during PHEKF (GMax, p < 0.001; GMed, p < 0.001). HAM and ipsilateral ES amplitudes were not significantly different among the three conditions (ipsilateral ES, p = 0.268; HAM, p = 0.577). In the pelvic transverse rotation angle and contralateral ES, the PHEKF with 30° IHA showed significantly lower than PHEKE with 30° abduction (the pelvic transverse rotation angle, p < 0.05; contralateral ES, p < 0.05). Conclusions : The results of these studies can examine that the PHEK with 30º IHA was effective to control pelvic transverse rotation and increase the contribution of the selective muscles activities of GMax and GMed muscles.

Oxidative stress is known to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells, which subsequently induce the synthesis of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and an aging phenomenon. The protective effects of triphlorethol-A, derived from Ecklonia cava, were investigated against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced damage using human skin keratinocytes. Data showed that triphlorethol-A inhibited ROS formation, induced catalase expression, inhibited DNA damage, and increased cell viability in keratinocytes. Triphlorethol-A treatment significantly reduced MMP-1 expression and production, compared to H2O2-treated cells. In addition, triphlorethol-A abrogated the activation of extracellular signal regulated protein kinase (ERK), which originates upstream of MMP-1 expression, and was induced by H2O2 treatment. Moreover, triphlorethol-A inhibited DNA binding activity of activator protein-1 (AP-1), a downstream transcription factor of ERK. Data indicate that the antioxidative properties of triphlorethol-A involve the inhibition of MMP-1 via ERK and AP-1 inhibition.

Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke in humans. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a canine model of stroke. Ischemic stroke was induced by using prepared autologous thrombus. The dogs were placed in lateral recumbency on the operation table and the cervical area of each dog was sterilized by using alcohol. After making a cervical incision, the common carotid artery and internal carotid artery (a branch of the common carotid artery that supplies an anterior part of the brain) were exposed. A 200 μL injection of the autologous thrombus prepared 24 hr prior to surgery was delivered with a 20 gauge venous catheter through an internal carotid artery. After successful delivery of the autologous thrombus, the venous catheter was removed, and the cervical incision was sutured. Neurologic signs including generalized seizures, tetraparesis, and altered mental status, were observed in all 3 dogs after induction of ischemic stroke and the signs manifested immediately after awakening from anesthesia. T1- and T2-weighted images and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images of the brain were acquired 1 day before and 1 day after surgery. On the day following ischemic stroke induction, MRI revealed multifocal lesions in the cerebral cortex and subcortex such as T1 hypointensity, T2 hyperintensity, FLAIR hyperintensity, and diffusion-weighted hyperintensity in all 3 dogs. Upon postmortem examination, ischemic lesions were found to be consistent with the MRI findings and they were unstained with 2% triphenyltetrazolium chloride. Histologic features of the earliest neuronal changes such as cytoplasmic eosinophilia with pyknotic nuclei were identified. Neuropil spongiosis and perivascular cuffing were also prominently observed at the infarcted area. The present study demonstrated the features of MRI and histopathologic findings in canine ischemic stroke models.
