        Preparation and Characterization of L-Phenylalanine Modified Chitosan Resin for Aromatic Amino Acid Adsorption

        A novel L-phenylalanine modified chitosan resin (PCR) was prepared for adsorption of aromatic aminoacid from mixed amino acids solution. The structure and properties of PCR were observed by FTIR, 13C NMR, AFMand SEM. PCR was found to swell rather than dissolve in acidic mediums from its solubility and swelling behaviorexperiments. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption capacity, selectivity and reusabilityas well as its application to the removal of L-phenylalanine and tyrosine from mixed amino acids solution. The results indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of PCR was 309.44 mg/g in sole L-phenylalanine solutionat 25 oC. The selectivity coefficient of L-phenylalanine, tyrosine and other amino acids on PCR indicated an overallpreference for L-phenylalanine and tyrosine, which were much higher than that of non-modified chitosan resin. PCRcould be reused for ten times with about 6.26% loss. This suggests that PCR is a very promising adsorbent for theselective removal of aromatic amino acid from mixed amino acids solution.

        <P>The hallmark of materials science is the ability to tailor the structures of a given material to provide a desired response. In this work, the structures involving crystallinity and crystallographic orientation of Cu nanowires electrochemically fabricated in ion-track templates have been investigated as a function of fabrication condition. Both single crystalline and polycrystalline nanowires were obtained by adjusting applied voltages and temperatures of electrochemical deposition. The anti-Hall–Petch effect was experimentally evidenced in the polycrystalline nanowires. The dominant crystallographic orientations of wires along [111], [100], or [110] directions were obtained by selecting electrochemical deposition conditions, i.e., H<SUB>2</SUB>SO<SUB>4</SUB> concentration in electrolyte, applied voltage, and electrodeposition temperature. </P>

        Korean Red Ginseng attenuates anxiety-like behavior during ethanol withdrawal in rats

        Background: Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) is known to have antianxiety properties. This study was conductedto investigate the anxiolytic effects of KRG extract (KRGE) during ethanol withdrawal (EW) andthe involvement of the mesoamygdaloid dopamine (DA) system in it. Methods: Rats were treated with 3 g/kg/d of ethanol for 28 d, and subjected to 3 d of withdrawal. DuringEW, KRGE (20 mg/kg/d or 60 mg/kg/d, p.o.) was given to rats once/d for 3 d. Thirty min after the finaldose of KRGE, anxiety-like behavior was evaluated in an elevated plus maze (EPM), and plasma corticosterone(CORT) levels were determined by a radioimmunoassay (RIA). In addition, concentrations ofDA and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) were alsomeasured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results: The EPM test and RIA revealed KRGE inhibited anxiety-like behavior and the over secretion ofplasma CORT during EW. Furthermore, the behavioral effect was blocked by a selective DA D2 receptor(D2R) antagonist (eticlopride) but not by a selective DA D1 receptor (D1R) antagonist (SCH23390). HPLCanalyses showed KRGE reversed EW-induced decreases of DA and DOPAC in a dose-dependent way. Additionally, Western blotting and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays showed that KRGEprevented the EW-induced reductions in tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) protein expression in the CeA and THmRNA expression in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Conclusion: These results suggest that KRGE has anxiolytic effects during EW by improving the mesoamygdaloidDA system.

        High densification and anti-corrosion of graphene-coated aluminum coating deposited on AZ31B magnesium by low-pressure cold spray

        In this paper, graphene-coated Al powders prepared by in situ reduction method were directly used for cold spraying, obtain�ing a graphene-reinforced Al matrix composite coating with more compact structure and better performance. Cross-sectional analysis revealed that compared with the pure Al powders, the graphene-coated Al powders were more severely deformed, and the resulting coating was denser and its porosity was reduced by over 80%. The hardness of the graphene-coated Al coating was increased by 40%, and its brine immersion time was prolonged by nearly three times. However, the graphene increases the pitting sensitivity of the Al coating; so, the enhanced corrosion resistance of the graphene-coated Al coating is mainly attributed to the improvement of its structure densifcation.
