Vol.44 No.1

In postmodern era, information technology modifies the concept of human beings and their relationships with machines. Most of postmodern theorists refuse to take humanism for granted from their philosophical viewpoints. This is the very ground of considering the subjectivites of posthuman. We try to think over the status of posthuman reading the fictions of William Gibson, Thomas Pynchon, and Kathy Acker. William Gibson is mapping the ways that new technologies are impacting on human life creating posthumanistic individuals and environments through the imagined future. Thomas Pynchon, who tried to show the fear of technological civilization in his early works, considers the possibility of oppositional subjectivity in virtual space in Gravity's Rainbow and Vineland. And Kathy Acker introduces the possible female subjectivities in the age when technology encroaches even human body itself. Searching these kind of possibility they imaging a collective or individual agency who secedes the modern binary oppositional system. Donna Haraway says that she wants to be a cyborg rather than a goddess. Her concept of cyborg can be related with the postmodern collective subjectivities in Pynchon's Vineland and the kind of self to be newly encoded in Acker's The Empire of the Senseless. This is not to say that cyborg imagery suggests some utopian landscape of the coming future, but it involved with the dream of heteroglossia. But the term, "posthuman" is not completely defined yet. Not all of the writers use this term to mean the same thing. As Hayles recognizes, the face and the future of posthuman is not clear. The problem, however, is that we are moving into the shadow of unknown. Accordingly, posthuman is less a term suggesting utopian or distopian view in itself than an open space which has the possibility of both.

Vol.2 No.1

The hot cell facility for research activities related to the lithium reduction of spent fuel, which is designed to permit safe handling of source materials with radioactivity levels up to 1,385 TBq, is planned to be built. To meet this goal, the facility is designed to keep gamma and neutron radiation lower than the recommended dose-rate in normally occupied areas. The calculations peformed with QAD-CGGP and MCNP-4C are used to evaluate the proposed engineering design concepts that would provide acceptable dose-rates during a normal operation in hot cell facility. The maximum effective gamma dose-rates on the surfaces of the facility at operation area and at service area calculated by QAD-CGGP are estimated to be $2.10{\times}10^{-3}, 2.97{\times}10^{-3} and 1.01{\times}10{-1}$ mSv/h, respectively. And those calculated by MCNP-4C are $1.60{\times}10^{-3}, 2.99{\times}10^{-3} and 7.88{\times}10^{-2}$ mSv/h, respectively, The dose-rates contributed by neutrons are one order of magnitude less than that of gamma sources. Therefore, it is confirmed that the radiological design for hot cell facility satisfies the Korean criterion of 0.01 mSv/h for the operation area and 0.15 mSv/h for the service (maintenance) area.

Vol.28 No.-

This thesis is a comparative study to identify the aspect and characteristic of the primordial self embodied in D.H. Lawrence's literature, compare it with that of Zen-Buddhism and Tantric Buddhism and find out the commonness between both of them. The aim of this thesis is to establish a new eastern interpretation of Lawrence's literature by identifying how the aspect and thought of Zen-Buddhism and Tantric Buddhism appear in Lawrence's works such as essaies, travel writings, novels, poems and what their characteristic and essential nature are. The wisdom of Lawrence's literature turns out to be identical with that of the oriental Zen-Buddhism and Tantric Buddhism. For clear understanding of the parts of mysticism in Lawrence's literature, the knowledge or research way of archetypal analysis psychology and phenomenology philosophy is used or applied. The result of such study is that the thought of primordial self embodies in Lawrence's literature is identical with the thought of the Void, Middle Way, Not-Two, or Cosmic Mind of Zen-Buddhism and with the thought of the return to or manifestation of Cosmic Energy and Primordial Soul of Tantric Buddhism. What Lawrence calls 'blood-consciousness', 'flesh-consciousness' is unconsciousness buried in man's self or body. The world of darkness in man's consciousness means, to Lawrence, that which is deeply rooted in consciousness. Such consciousness of Lawrence is identical with the pure, original, or cosmic consciousness which Oriental Zen-masters ive great emphasis to.

Vol.10 No.2

This thesis is intended to clarify characteristics and meaning of esotericism in D.H.Lawrence's Literature. The works of D.H.Lawrence for this research include novels such as The Plumed Serpent, Sons and Lovers, Lady Chatterley's Lover, and The Man Who Died. The review of the former first novel shows Lawrence's esotericism through a old primitive society's religion. And the review of the latter three novels show Lawrence's esotericism through 'Dark Sex' of the body mystic in a man and a woman which can be called 'religion of sex.' In other words Lawrence puts sex into a religion. The Plumed Serpent represents the esotericism of the ancient American Indian religion like 'Dark God' religion or Quetzalcoatl religion. The esotericism of this novel is shown through the Indian traditional rituals, religious symbols, dance and hymn, etc. Main characters such as Do'n Ramon, Do'n Cipriano and Kate aim to become manifestation of natural or cosmic vital Gods of divinity. The road to the God is the oneness of man and nature or cosmos like earth, lake, cloud, etc., which are called pantheistic elements. Therefore man is not simply a man but a divine living being. Lawrence's esotericism of this religion contains mysticity of profoundness, vitality, and divinity. Sons and Lovers represents the esotericism through sex relationship of a main male character Paul and a female main character Clara. To Paul a sex with her gives a mysterious experience, which means creative, impersonal dimension. He feels a sexual vitality from her as 'the baptism of life.' A sex is a means towards the God in man to D.H.Lawrence. The primary sexual forces may be interpreted as the immanent God. A true sex has a religious depth and significance in this novel. A man and woman achieve a self-fulfillment and self-perfection in the sex. Lady Chatterley's Lover shows a symbolic cosmic rhythm and vitality in the sex relationship of a male main character Mellors and a female main character Connie. Their sex relationship echoes a ancient primitive ritual. In an old culture, a sex is a reflection of a cosmic rhythm. Therefore a sex has a cosmic dimension to Lawrence. The sex means a holy, mysterious religion which gives a rebirth from death to a man. To Lawrence a modern man is dead because he or she is materialized and automated. In this sense, a real sex is a way into freedom from a deadness of modern material culture. To Connie the reckless, shameless sensuality shakes her to her foundations, strips her to the very last, and makes a different woman of her. Sex functions as a religious catharsis to Lawrence. The Man Who Died shows a esotericism through a man-woman oneness relationship of a mystic body within a cosmos of a dark night through the main male character The Man and a female character Girl of Isis. At last, The Man gets into a Rose or a flower in the oneness with Girl of Isis with his soul deep in a night's Universe. To Lawrence, a man, a woman and cosmos can become a unity of being through sex relationship.
