        miR-638 is a new biomarker for outcome prediction of non-small cell lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy

        MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small non-coding RNAs, mediate gene expression by either cleaving target mRNAs or inhibiting their translation. They have key roles in the tumorigenesis of several cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of miR-638 in the evaluation of NSCLC patient prognosis in response to chemotherapy. First, we detected miR-638 expression levels in vitro in the culture supernatants of the NSCLC cell line SPC-A1 treated with cisplatin, as well as the apoptosis rates of SPC-A1. Second, serum miR-638 expression levels were detected in vivo by using nude mice xenograft models bearing SPC-A1 with and without cisplatin treatment. In the clinic, the serum miR-638 levels of 200 cases of NSCLC patients before and after chemotherapy were determined by quantitative real-time PCR, and the associations of clinicopathological features with miR-638 expression patterns after chemotherapy were analyzed. Our data helped in demonstrating that cisplatin induced apoptosis of the SPC-A1 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner accompanied by increased miR-638 expression levels in the culture supernatants. In vivo data further revealed that cisplatin induced miR-638 upregulation in the serum derived from mice xenograft models, and in NSCLC patient sera, miR-638 expression patterns after chemotherapy significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis. Moreover, survival analyses revealed that patients who had increased miR-638 levels after chemotherapy showed significantly longer survival time than those who had decreased miR-638 levels. Our findings suggest that serum miR-638 levels are associated with the survival of NSCLC patients and may be considered a potential independent predictor for NSCLC prognosis.

        Adaptive Weight Collaborative Complementary Learning for Robust Visual Tracking

        Discriminative correlation filter (DCF) based tracking algorithms have recently shown impressive performance on benchmark datasets. However, amount of recent researches are vulnerable to heavy occlusions, irregular deformations and so on. In this paper, we intend to solve these problems and handle the contradiction between accuracy and real-time in the framework of tracking-by-detection. Firstly, we propose an innovative strategy to combine the template and color-based models instead of a simple linear superposition and rely on the strengths of both to promote the accuracy. Secondly, to enhance the discriminative power of the learned template model, the spatial regularization is introduced in the learning stage to penalize the objective boundary information corresponding to features in the background. Thirdly, we utilize a discriminative multi-scale estimate method to solve the problem of scale variations. Finally, we research strategies to limit the computational complexity of our tracker. Abundant experiments demonstrate that our tracker performs superiorly against several advanced algorithms on both the OTB2013 and OTB2015 datasets while maintaining the high frame rates.

        Enhancement of attraction to sex pheromone of Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) by structurally unrelated sex pheromone compounds of Conogethes punctiferalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

        Grapholita molesta (Busck) (the oriental fruit moth; OFM) and Conogethes punctiferalis (Guenée) are both fruit and stem borers with overlapping habitats, occurrences, and outbreak cycles. These two species are in different families and they have completely different sex pheromone components. Here, the effects of the sex pheromone components of C. punctiferalis, (E)-10-hexadecenal (E10-16:Ald) and (Z)-10-hexadecenal (Z10-16:Ald) and their mixture, were evaluated on the sexual communication of OFM by examining electrophysiological (EAG) and behavioral responses. We found that a considerably large amount of E10-16:Ald or Z10-16:Ald and a tiny amount of OFM pheromone elicited comparable EAG responses in OFM males, indicating the low antennal olfactory sensitivity of OFM males to the heterospecific pheromone compounds. In two different peach orchard parcels, captures of OFM by their pheromone lures baited in delta traps were increased by at least 1.5 times when OFM pheromone lures were combined with lures that contained 1000 μg of either E10-16:Ald, Z10-16:Ald or their mixture. In two other pear orchard parcels, both E10-16:Ald and Z10-16:Ald increased captures of OFM in Unitraps in a dose-dependent manner with more than a four-fold increase. Therefore, the enhanced attractiveness of OFM lures by the two interspecific pheromones suggests their potential application to improve mass trapping, population monitoring and mating disruption of OFM.

        Wheel-Rail Stick-Slip Characteristics under Coupling Damages of Rail Corrugation and Wheel Flat in Metro

        To investigate wheel-rail contact stick-slip characteristics (SSCs) under coupling damages of rail corrugation and wheel flat and explain the co-action mechanism of the two damages, a vehicle-track system model was built, and the SSCs were analyzed by employing the index of the overall dispersion rate of adhesion coefficient (ODRAC). The results show that both inner and outer wheel-rail systems (WRSs) on the curve have a propensity for stick-slip motion. Since the values of SSCs of the inner WRS are 1.204 to 2.963 times higher than those of the outer one, the inner WRS is easier to stick-slip vibration (SSV). When the rail corrugation is fixed, the overall dispersion rates of adhesion coefficients (ODRACs) progressively decrease with the increase of flat depth and length, and the decrease range is 2.766 − 41.775%. When the wheel flat is fixed, the ODRACs also progressively decrease as the corrugation wavelength increases, and the decrease ranges from 7.129% to 42.474%; the ODRACs incrementally increase together with the increase of the corrugation wave depth, and the increase ranges from 10.030% to 30.380%. The presence of flat will attenuate the level of SSV of the original system with rail corrugation, whilst the presence of corrugation will intensify the level of SSV of the original system with wheel flat.

        Influence of Dynamic Loading Activation Time on Electro-osmotic Consolidation of Soft Soil

        Electro-osmosis is a suitable method for the consolidation of soft soil. However, the significant potential loss caused by the cracking of the soil near the electrode in the later stages of electro-osmosis hinders further improvement of its efficiency. Dynamic loading is applied to overcome this problem. The dynamic loading activation time is considered to strongly influence the performance of the combined electro-osmosis-dynamic loading process. In this paper, the maximum current ratio (MCR) is proposed as an index of the dynamic loading activation time. Laboratory tests were performed with different dynamic loading activation times to confirm the influence of the dynamic loading time on electro-osmosis consolidation. During the combined processes of dynamic loading and electro-osmosis, the current, electric potential, discharged water, and surface settlement were monitored. In the following testing, the water content and undrained shear strength were measured. Compared with the electro-osmosis method alone, electro-osmosis and dynamic loading was found to yield superior performance improvement. The method described in this paper to determine the optimal dynamic loading activation time as a function of the MCR, and electro-osmosis, exhibits potential as an improved approach for the consolidation of soft soil in engineering practice.

        ON CLENSHAW-CURTIS SPECTRAL COLLOCATION METHOD FOR VOLTERRA INTEGRAL EQUATIONS

        The main purpose of this paper is to solve the second kind Volterra integral equations by Clenshaw-Curtis spectral collocation method. First of all, we can transform the integral interval from [-1, x] to [-1, 1] through a simple linear transformation, and discretize the integral term in the equation by Clenshaw-Curtis quadrature formula to obtain the collocation equations. Then we provide a rigorous error analysis for the proposed method. At last, several numerical example are used to verify the results of theoretical analysis.

        Protective Effects of Enteral Nutrition Supplemented with Crassostrea hongkongensis Polysaccharides Against 5-Fluorouracil-Induced Intestinal Mucosal Damage in Rats

        Chemotherapeutics, including 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), often damage the intestinal mucosal barrier and cause intestinal mucositis (IM). Supplementation with immunoregulatory polysaccharides from Crassostrea hongkongensis has been shown to positively influence the effectiveness and toxicity of 5-FU. Therefore, we studied the effects of oyster polysaccharides on 5-FU-induced intestinal mucosal damage in rats. The C30–60% ethanol-precipitated fraction of polysaccharides promoted IEC-6 cell proliferation and exhibited a maximal effect at a 0.0195 mg/mL concentration. Moreover, treatment with C30–60% polysaccharide-based nutrition formula (OPNF) partially prevented the 5-FU-induced degenerative changes in the histology and ultrastructure of small intestinal mucosa. In addition, the endotoxin level of rats fed with 5-FU and OPNF decreased to the normal control level. Furthermore, the 5-FU-induced increase of proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-2 and the decrease of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 level in the peripheral blood were significantly attenuated by OPNF administration. In conclusion, Oyster C30–60% polysaccharides can ameliorate 5-FU-induced IM by partially preventing mucosal damage, reducing inflammation, and promoting immunity.

        Suppression of abnormal chattering of a high-speed EMU carbody

        A carbody chattering phenomenon accompanied by bogie hunting movement was investigated. The online test results showed that the vehicle at a large tread conicity state exhibited insufficient stability when running at higher speeds, causing the hunting frequency of the bogie to continuously increase, approach the diamond-shaped deformation modal frequency of the carbody, consequently causing the carbody to chatter. To improve the running stability of the vehicle, to suppress the carbody chattering, a two-step progressive optimisation method that combined analytical optimisation, simulation optimisation to optimise the parameters of the anti-yaw damper was proposed. Furthermore, the effect of optimisation was experimentally verified. Results showed that after optimisation, the critical speed of the vehicle under the condition of worn wheel was significantly enlarged, the bogie exhibited no obvious hunting motion, carbody chatter was significantly alleviated, both the ride quality, the curve passing performance were improved.

        APPLICATION OF BIONIC ALGORITHM BASED ON CS-SVR AND BA-SVR IN SHORT-TERM TRAFFIC STATE PREDICTION MODELING OF URBAN ROAD

        Accurate short-term traffic state prediction is a crucial requisite for control and guidance of traffic flow in the intelligent traffic system, which has attracted increasing attention in the transportation field recently. This paper tests the optimization performances of two emerging bionic algorithms, known as Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CS) and Bat Algorithm (BA). Combined with the Support Vector Regression (SVR) principle, the two aforementioned algorithms are applied to optimize the kernel function parameters in SVR. At last, the speed data of a road network in Guangzhou are collected. The prediction performances of the CS-SVR and BA-SVR models are tested after preprocessing the data. From the overall prediction rates, the CS-SVR algorithm is slightly better than BA-SVR in terms of calculating speed. Furthermore, the two algorithms are significantly superior to the traditional SVR model and long short-term memory networks (LSTM), thereby verifying their effectiveness and practicability in short-term traffic state prediction.

        Lactogenic Activity of an Enzymatic Hydrolysate from Octopus vulgaris and Carica papaya in SD Rats

        The traditional Chinese medicine theory believes that octopus papaya soup can stimulate milk production in lactating women. The objective of this study was to determine whether dietary supplementation with an enzymatic hydrolysate of Octopus vulgaris and Carica papaya (EHOC) could increase milk production and nutritional indexes in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. Female SD rats (n = 24) were fed a control diet (n = 8), EHOC-supplemented diet, or a positive control diet (Shengruzhi) from day 10 of pregnancy to day 10 of lactation. Maternal serum, mammary gland (day 10 of lactation), milk, and pup weight (daily) were collected for analysis. Results showed that the EHOC diet obviously elevated daily milk yield and pup weight compared to the control group (P < .05). The EHOC diet was found to increase the concentration of prolactin (PRL), progesterone (P), estradiol (E2), and growth hormone (GH) significantly in the circulation and mammary gland. Mammary glands of EHOCtreated dams showed clear lobuloalveolar development and proliferation of myoepithelial cells, but no striking variations were observed among the groups. Furthermore, the nutrition content and immune globulin concentration in the milk of EHOCsupplemented dams were higher than those of the control group, especially the cholesterol, glucose, and IgG were higher by 44.98% (P < .001), 42.76% (P< .01), and 42.23% (P < .01), respectively. In conclusion, this article demonstrates that EHOC administration has beneficial effects on milk production in the dams and on performance of the dam and pup. These results indicate that EHOC could be explored as a potentially lactogenic nutriment for lactating women.
