        The effects of functional electrical stimulation applied to the gluteus medius and tibialis anterior on stair climbing ability in persons with stroke

        Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of functional electrical stimulation (FES) applied to the gluteus medius (Gm) and tibialis anterior (TA) during stair climbing in persons with stroke compared to FES applied to the TA only during stair climbing, and during stair climbing without FES in persons with stroke. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty subjects with stroke participated in this study. Subjects were included if: 1) they were diagnosed as stroke at least 6 months before; 2) had Mini Mental State Examination- Korean score of 24 or higher; 3) were able to climb a flight of 10 stairs independently (with or without walking aid). The patients walked 10 stairs 3 times with FES applied to the Gm and TA, only TA, or no FES. There was a 1-minute rest period between each bout. The assessments were made using the Timed Up & Down Test and the Wii Balance Board. Results: Stair climbing with FES applied to the Gm and TA was significantly faster than stair climbing with FES applied to the TA only and without FES (p<0.05). Stair climbing with FES applied to the Gm and TA exhibited significantly greater sway velocity than stair climbing without FES (p<0.05). However, maximal sway distances were not significantly different between groups. Conclusions: Stair climbing with FES applied to the Gm and TA can be an important component of a rehabilitation program for improving stair climbing ability in persons with stroke.

      • The Effects of High Fat Diet-Induced Stress on Olfactory Sensitivity, Behaviors, and Transcriptional Profiling in <i>Drosophila melanogaster</i>

        <P>High-fat diet (HFD) often causes obesity and it has detrimental effects on the sensory system. In particular, sensory-mediated responses are crucial for maintaining energy balance, as they are involved in a metabolic regulation; however, there is still no clear explanation about the relationship between HFD-induced stress and sensory system. To gain insight on how HFD-induced stress affects olfactory sensitivity and behavioral responses, we have used a <I>Drosophila melanogaster</I> model for olfactory and nutrient-related signaling and accessed physiological, behavioral, and transcriptional changes. We demonstrated that lifespan and climbing ability in HFD-treated flies decreased and that olfactory sensitivity and behavioral responses to odorants were changed. Olfactory sensitivity to eight of ten odorants after 14 days on HFD treatment were reduced, while behavioral attraction was increased to benzaldehyde in flies that were treated with HFD. This behavioral and physiological modification in HFD-treated flies for 14 days was accompanied by a significant decrease in <I>DmOrco</I> gene expression in a peripheral olfactory organ, suggesting that is could be involved in the action of metabolic and sensory signal. Gene expression profiles of antennae showed significant differences on the olfactory receptors, odorant-binding proteins, and insulin signaling. Our results suggested that olfactory sensitivity and behavioral responses to HFD-induced stress are mediated through olfactory and nutrient-related signaling pathways.</P>

      • 발굴조사를 통해 본 홍주읍성 북문지 주변 성곽의 구성

        홍성 홍주읍성 북문지 및 주변성곽에 대한 발굴조사는 6차례의 시·발굴조사를 통해 체성 및 옹성의 현황 및 평면구조, 출입시설(문지)등을 확인하였다. 특히 체성부 내측에서 약 250cm 너비의 2열의 석렬이 체성부와 평행하게 전개되고 있고, 토층 역시 기저부 석렬의 중간에 맞추어져 분기되고 있는 양상을 보인다. 이러한 점으로 미루어 볼 때 기존에 고려 시대 토성의 토축부를 굴착하여 조선시대에 석축성으로 수.개축되었음을 알려주는 좋은 사례로 판단된다. 홍주읍성 북문지 주변성곽의 양상을 살펴보면 첫 번째 기저부 석렬 내측으로는 와적열이 체성과 평행하게 조성되어 있는데 이는 토루 내측 와적 지정과 우수의 맹수구 기능을 겸비했던 시설로 추정되며, 고려시대 기단 석축형 판축토성에서 나타나는 현상을 확인할 수 있다. 이는 고려시대 치성으로 판단된다. 두 번째 퇴축성벽이 확인된 부분은 초축성벽의 지대석 및 기단석이 다른 지점에 비하여 심하게 이탈되어 있으며, 이러한 부분은 약 35m정도 확인되었다. 홍주읍성 내 잔존하는 치의 규모와 유사함을 확인 할 수 있다. 세 번째 문지 및 옹성이 위치히는 조사지점 중앙부는 최근까지도 도로로 이용하고 있었으며, 수도관, 광케이블 등이 매설되면서 상당 부분 교란이 진행되었다. 네 번째 출입시설(문지)은 육축 하부에 윗면을 편평하게 다듬은 지대석이 경계에서 확인되고 있으며, 북문 출입시설의 바닥은 너비 4.79m, 길이 5.36m 정도 범위에서 크기 50cm이내의 박석이 바닥에 깔린 상태로 남아있는 것으로 확인되었다. 마지막으로 출입시설에 인접한 육축부에서는 체성의 축성이 협축식으로 확인되고 있으며, 채움석의 너비 역시 5.36m정도로 확장되는 양상을 확인 할 수 있다. 문지 중앙을 기준으로 채움석이 확장되는 동-서 폭은 약12m로 개구부의 너비가 평거식 및 홍예식으로 조성되기에 넓은 편이며, 문구부 내측에 수평조성 된 지대석이 확인되지 않는 것으로 미루어보아 문지의 구성양상은 개거식으로 추정된다.

      • Elongation and Applicaiton of Repellent Effects of Plant Essential Oils with Vanillin to Aedes aegypti

        Six plant essential oils, vanillin, and their mixtures were tested for repellent activities and olfactory responses in a dengue virus vector mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Among the plant essential oils, cassia oil showed complete protection time (CPT) of 75 minutes. CPTs of lemongrass, lemoneucalyptus, xanthoxylum oils, and vanillin were within 30 minutes at 5% (0.21 mg/cm2) tested level, although their CPTs were not comparable to same concentration of DEET that showed 127.5 minutes of CPT. However, their repellency effects were significantly improved in two conditions; improving concentration up to 15% level (0.63 mg/cm2) and addition of vanillin. In bioassays using binary or tertiary mixtures with one or two essential oils with or without vanillin, the composition of 1:3:1 (v/v/w) consisted of lemongrass oil, xanthoxylum oil and vanillin provided 270 min-CPT. As a practical application, the mixture of 1:1:1 formulation containing lemongrass oil, xanthoxylum oil, and vanillin (v/v/w) was enclosed into the Viscopearl, porous cellulose beads that provide gradual release of volatile compounds. Efficiently, more than 90% of repellency for 2 hours was observed in cage and semi-field chamber tests using the formulation. In addition to behavioral assays, we subsequently examined how mosquitoes sense the blends of oils with vanillin by using electroantennogram (EAG) recording. Binary mixture with one oil and vanillin, which extended CPTs, showed no significant patterns of EAG alternation, while tertiary mixtures of oils and vanillin decreased patterns of EAG responses as an increase of vanillin contents in the mixture, implying further potential roles of vanillin as a synergist in mosquito repellency. Based on behavioral and electrophysiological data, cassia, rosemary, lemongrass, xanthoxylum, and lemoneucalyptus oils could provide the high possibility for development of commercial products for useful management strategies to control mosquitoes.

        UDP 기반 전송 프로토콜에서의 적응형 비디오 스트리밍 기법 성능 분석

        QUIC(Quick UDP Internet Connection)과 SRT(Secure Reliable Transport)는 기존 TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)에서 불가피한 연결 및 전송 지연 시간을 줄이기 위해서 설계된 UDP(User Datagram Protocol) 기반 전송 기술이다. 본 논문에서는 저지연 전송을 위한 QUIC과 SRT의 주요 특징과 혼잡제어 방식을 소개한다. 추가적으로, 최신 적응형 비트레이트 스트리밍이 적용된 DASH(Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) 시스템에서 HTTP/TCP와 HTTP/QUIC를 통한 사용자 경험(QoE, Quality of Experience) 결과를 분석한다. QoE 결과는 QUIC의 주요 특징을 반영하여 처리량과 응답 대기 시간을 최적화할 수 있는 저지연 적응형 비트레이트 스트리밍 기술 대한 연구개발이 필요함을 보여준다. Quick UDP Internet Connection (QUIC) and Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) are User Datagram Protocol (UDP)-based transmission technologies designed to reduce connection and transmission latencies, which are inevitable in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). In this paper, the main features and the congestion control methods of QUIC and SRT for the low-latency transmission are introduced. In addition, based on the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) system with the latest adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR), QoE(Quality of Experience) results over HTTP/TCP and HTTP/QUIC are analyzed. The QoE results show that the low-latency ABR technology is required to optimize throughput and response latency, by applying the main characteristics of QUIC.
