Exploring the Linguistic and Textual Factors That Affect the Quality of L2 Writing: The Coh-Metrix Study

        Inam Ullah,임효정 현대영어교육학회 2023 현대영어교육 Vol.24 No.-

Efforts have been made to improve the output of automated essay evaluation systems to emulate human ratings in the field of applied linguistics. The current study aimed to explore the textual features that distinguish good from poor second-language (L2) writing using Coh-Metrix version 3.0 and to compare the output of an online text analysis tool to human rating. Sixty essays were collected from tertiary-level on-campus essay writing contests in 2017 - 2018. Three experienced English instructors rated the essays using a rubric from Jacobs et al. (1981). The Coh-Metrix output, including indices of descriptive, text easability, lexical diversity, connectives, latent semantic analysis (LSA), word information, and L2 readability, were evaluated by correlation analyses and independent t-tests. The results showed that higher scorers wrote longer, with a greater number of sentences and paragraphs. They were also likely to use more concrete words, more frequent words, and better cohesion, all of which contributed to readability. The pedagogical implications and limitations of using Coh-Metrix for L2 writing testing and instruction were further discussed.

Experimental investigation of polysulfone modified cellulose acetate membrane for CO2/H2 gas separation

        Inamullah Douna,Sarah Farrukh,Arshad Hussain,Zarrar Salahuddin,Tayyaba Noor,Erum Pervaiz,Mohammad Younas,Xian Feng Fan 한국화학공학회 2022 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.39 No.1

Processed gas streams from the water gas shift reactor (WGSR) are enriched with CO2 and H2. Purification of H2 from CO2 for different applications is required because of its environmental and economic benefits. Among different separation technologies, membrane technology gets much attention due to its various advantages. In this work, cellulose acetate/polysulfone blended membranes were fabricated via solution casting method for CO2/H2 separation. The separation performance of pure CA membrane was enhanced by addition of PSF. The fabricated membranes were analyzed through various characterization techniques, such as FTIR, SEM, DSC, and XRD. Gas permeation results show that permeability of CO2 increased with increasing concentration of PSF. Notable permeability (P=80.51 Barrer) of CO2 and selectivity of CO2/H2=1.83 of CA/PSF 2wt% were achieved at 25 oC and 2.5 bar compared to pure CA membrane. To the best of our knowledge, this blend has been studied for the first time for gas separation, prepared through the solution casting method.

New antimicrobial flavonoids and chalcone from Colutea armata

        Farah Inamullah,Itrat Fatima,Sadia Khan,Mehdi Hassan Kazmi,Abdul Malik,Rasool Bakhsh Tareen,Tanveer Abbas 대한약학회 2017 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.40 No.8

Colucins A (1) and B (2), new flavonoids andcolucone (3), the new chalcone derivative, have been isolatedfrom the CHCl3-soluble fraction of the whole plant ofColutea armata along with luteolin (4), luteolin 7-O-b-Dglucoside(5), isoliquiritigenin (6), trans-caffeic acid (7)and stigmasterol (8) reported for the first time from thisspecies. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopictechniques including MS and 2D-NMR spectroscopy. Compounds 1 and 2 showed significant antimicrobialactivity against two Gram positive and three Gram negativebacterial strains while 3 was moderately active.

      • Innovative method to prepare a stable emulsion liquid membrane for high CO2 absorption and its performance evaluation for a natural gas feed in a rotating disk contactor

Bhatti, Inamullah,Qureshi, Khadija,Kamarudin, Khairul Sozana Nor,Bazmi, Aqeel Ahmed,Bhutto, Abdul Waheed,Ahmad, Faizan,Lee, Moonyong Elsevier 2016 Journal of natural gas science and engineering Vol.34 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This paper presents an innovative method to prepare a stable emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) for high CO2 absorption in a natural gas feed. This new method achieved high throughput at low power consumption. The ELM prepared using this new method was characterized by determining the effects of the concentration of the ELM constituents, emulsification time, and speed on the emulsion droplet size (EDS) and stability. This was followed by a parametric study of the process parameters for CO2 separation from natural gas in a rotating disk contactor (RDC)-based setup to evaluate the performance of a stable ELM. The results suggest that the retention time of the stable ELM in a RDC increases with increasing amount of absorbed CO2. The results support the fundamental development of the ELM process to achieve a high overall separation efficiency of CO2 removal from natural gas with a relatively small contact time. This is the first parametric study of CO2 absorption from a gas stream in ELM using a RDC as the contracting equipment. The results of the parametric study suggested that the factors of time, TEA concentration and RDC speed have significant effect on the CO2 absorption from natural gas feed. It was identified that 4% TEA in ELM, 30 min operational time and 700 rpm speed of modified RDC system is suitable for maximum CO2 absorption from gas mixture of CO2/CH4. Furthermore, the study suggested that the ELM containing 4% TEA can absorb 5.6 kmol/m3 CO2.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Preparation and characterization of stable emulsion liquid membrane (ELM). </LI> <LI> Parametric study of CO2 absorption from natural gas in rotating disk contactor (RDC). </LI> <LI> Retention time of the stable ELM increases with increasing amount of absorbed CO2. </LI> <LI> Fundamental development of ELM process for high overall separation efficiency. </LI> </UL> </P>

Morphological Studies of the Predatory Ladybird Beetle Stethorus vegans (Blackburn) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

        Farman Ullah,Inamullah Khan,Hart, Robert-Spooner,Peter Bailey,Khalil, Said-Khan Korean Society of Applied Entomology 2002 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.5 No.1

Morphological features of the ladybird beetle Stethorus vegans (Blackburn) were studied at 25 $\pm$ $2^{\circ}$ with a photoperiod of 16L: 8D. All stages of S. vahans were examined under a stereo-zoom microscope. Newly laid eggs were translucent white, turning pale yellow after 4-5 hours. The mean egg dimension was 0.36 x 0.19 mm. Eggs laid by unmated females did not hatch or show any signs of development. Newly emerged larvae were white in color, but soon became pale creamy-white. There were four larval instars, which were differentiated from each other by the presence of exuviae and differences in head capsule size. The pre-pupa, not a distinct stage in the life cycle but a quiescent period at the end of the 4th larval instar, lasted for several hours. Pupae were oval, flattened and black-brown with (me hair like setae on their dorsal sides with a mean length and width of 1.06 x 0.74 mm. The adults were oval, convex and black with small yellow setae on their dorsal side.
