<P>Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder worldwide. Progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) and their synaptic terminal connections in the striatum are main characterizations of PD. Although many efforts have been made to develop therapeutics, no treatment has been proven effective. We previously demonstrated that bvPLA2 can protect dopaminergic neurons by modulating neuroinflammatory responses in an MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine)-induced mouse model of PD. The cellular basis for the neuroprotective response of bvPLA2 was the induction of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs), a population known to suppress immune activation and maintain homeostasis and tolerance to self-antigen. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of different routes of bvPLA2 administration in a PD mouse model. Neurobehavioral assessment revealed progressive deterioration in locomotor functions of the MPTP group compared with the control group. However, such functions were improved following subcutaneous (s.c.) bvPLA2 administration. The results showed that the s.c. route of bvPLA2 administration contributed to the induction of Treg cells and the reduction of Th1 and Th17 populations, demonstrating that the neuroprotective effects were associated with reduced tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive dopaminergic neurons and microglia. These results suggested that the s.c. bvPLA2 injection could be beneficial for treating aspects of PD.</P>

<P>Salivary gland stem/progenitor cells belong to the endodermal lineage and may serve as good candidates to replace their dysfunctional counterparts. The objective of this study was to isolate large numbers of salivary gland tissue-derived stem cells (SGSCs) from adult rats in order to develop a clinically applicable method that does not involve sorting or stem cell induction by duct ligation. We analysed SGSCs isolated from normal rat salivary glands to determine whether they retained the major characteristics of stem cells, self-renewal and multipotency, especially with respect to the various endodermal cell types. SGSCs expressed high levels of integrin α6β1 and c-kit, which are surface markers of SGSCs. In particular, the integrin α6β1(+) /c-kit(+) salivary gland cells maintained the morphology, proliferation activity and multipotency of stem cells for up to 92 passages in 12 months. Furthermore, we analysed the capacity of SGSCs to differentiate into endoderm lineage cell types, such as acinar-like and insulin-secreting cells. When cultured on growth factor reduced matrigel, the morphology of progenitor cells changed to acinar-like structures and these cells expressed the acinar cell-specific marker, α-amylase, and tight junction markers. Moreover, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) data showed increased expression of pancreatic cell markers, including insulin, Pdx1, pan polypeptide and neurogenin-3, when these cells formed pancreatic clusters in the presence of activin A, exendin-4 and retinoic acid. These data demonstrate that adult salivary stem/progenitor cells may serve as a potential source for cell therapy in salivary gland hypofunction and diabetes.</P>

The purpose of this study is to investigate the expertise that secondary school English teachers possess in terms of PCK (Pedagogical Content Knowledge). The literature emphasizes the importance of PCK for English teachers to become professional in teaching English at school. A survey has been conducted for secondary school English teachers throughout Korea in order to examine their perceptions toward professional knowledge. The data drawn from the survey are developed on the basis of the comprehensive PCK categorization framework that has been presented in previous studies. An analysis of the results showed that secondary school English teachers expressed a positive evaluation of their professional knowledge in general. However, the study also showed that there are some areas of teachers`` professional knowledge that secondary teachers lack and need to develop further. To conclude, this study makes suggestions for the development of English teachers`` professional knowledge including both strong and weak areas of professional knowledge of English teachers and the preferred way of overcoming the identified weaknesses.

<P>Electrochemical properties of enzymes are of fundamental and practical importance in bio-electrochemical applications. These redox properties, which can cause the reversible changes in the current according to their redox reactions in solution, often depend on the chemical activity of transition metal ions as cofactors within the active sites of enzymes. Here, we demonstrate that the reversible resistance changes in enzyme-based multilayer films can be caused by the externally applied voltage as a result of charge trap/release of haem FeIII/FeII redox couples in dry form. It is also demonstrated that the electrically bistable switching properties of redox enzymes can be applied to nonvolatile memory devices requiring low power consumption. For this study, cationic poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) was alternately layer-by-layer assembled with anionic catalase enzyme onto Pt-coated substrates until the desired number of layers was deposited. A top electrode was deposited onto (PAH/catalase)<I>n</I> multilayer films to complete device fabrication. When an external bias was applied to the devices, a switching phenomenon depending on the voltage polarity (<I>i.e.</I>, bipolar switching) was observed at low operating voltages (RESET at 1.8 V and SET voltage at −1.5 V), fast switching speed at the nanosecond level, and an ON/OFF current ratio of ∼102. In the case of inserting insulating layers of about 2 nm thickness between adjacent catalase (CAT) layers, these devices exhibited the higher memory performance (ON/OFF current ratio of ∼106) and the lower power consumption than those of (PAH/CAT)15 multilayer devices.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>We demonstrate that the redox enzymes can be used as electrically active materials for nonvolatile memory devices and that, furthermore their switching behavior originates from redox sites within enzymes. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c2jm16231h'> </P>

Purpose: Recently, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), an inflammatory response marker, has been reported to be associated with the prognosis in patients with various type of cancer. However, there have been no studies until now that have explored the prognostic role of combined detection of NLR and CEA in patients with synchronous liver-limited colorectal metastases (sCRLM). Methods: Eighty-three patients who histologically diagnosed as sCRLM were selected. Their laboratory and clinical data were collected retrospectively. Using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the cutoff value of NLR was calculated based on which patients were assigned to a high NLR (more than 1.94) group and low NLR (less than 1.94) group. A cutoff value of 100 ng/mL for serum CEA level was used in light of the previous literature. Results: CEA level and Poorly differentiated histology of colon cancer was significantly correlated with high NLR (P = 0.005 and P = 0.048, respectively). The multivariate analysis identified the high NLR as independent prognostic factors for OS and DFS in all patients (P = 0.010 and P = 0.006, respectively). Patients with both low levels of NLR and CEA had a significantly longer OS and DFS (P = 0.026 and P = 0.009, respectively). Conclusion: In conclusion, elevated preoperative NLR is strongly correlated with both survival and recurrence in patients who have been diagnosed with resectable sCRLM. The combination of NLR and CEA level could be a more powerful prognostic marker than NLR alone
