The broad-specificity amino acid racemase (Bsar) from Pseudomonas putida catalyzes the racemization of various amino acids, offering a flexible and feasible platform to develop a new non-antibiotic selectable marker system for plant transformation. In the present study, we demonstrated that a Bsar variant, Bsar-R174K, that is useful as a selectable marker gene in Arabidopsis and rice that were susceptible to l-lysine and D-alanine. The introduction of wild-type Bsar, Bsar-R174K or Bsar-R174A into E. coli lysine or asparagine auxotrophs was able to rescue the growth of these microorganisms in minimal media supplemented with selectable amino acid enantiomers. The transformation of Arabidopsis with Bsar or Bsar variants based on d-alanine selection revealed that Bsar-R174K had the greatest efficiency (2.40%), superior to kanamycin selectionbased transformation (1.10%). Whereas, l-lysine-based selection exhibited lower efficiency for Bsar-R174K (0.17%). The progenies of selected Bsar-R174K transgenic Arabidopsis revealed normal growth properties. In addition, Bsar-R174K transgenic rice was obtained on l-lysine medium with an efficiency of 0.9%, and the progenies of the transgenic rice revealed morphologically normal phenotypes comparable with their wild-type counterparts. This study presents the first report of broad range amino acid racemase Bsar-R174K as a non-antibiotic selectable marker system applied in transgenic plants.
The Development and Current State of Inclusive Education at Universities in Taiwan
Hsin Yi Wang 아시아지적장애인연맹 산하 아시아저널센터 2019 Asia-Pacific Journal of Intellectual Disabilities Vol.6 No.2
The purpose of this study is to investigate the development of current state of inclusive education at universities in Tiwan. In Tiwan, inclusive education is for all students who are disabled/non-disabled. We believe that inclusive education ensure the educational right of all students regardless of the type and degree of individual difference. However, challenges remain in the inclination of teaching staff to modify their teaching materials, as this is currently not in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) obligations. Furthermore, higher education is not part of compulsory education, a fact which can be a point of debate and represent a challenge to implementing inclusive education in this setting. In conclusion, students with developmental disabilities who cannot comprehend the theoretical or academic subjects being studied in higher education may be better served by appropriate transfers or bridge courses aimed to deliver career-oriented knowledge and training.
The Impact of Non-Financial Stakeholders on Accounting Conservatism: The Case of Labor Unions'
Hsin-Yi (Shirley) Hsieh,정부천,이한상 서울대학교 경영연구소 2017 Seoul Journal of Business Vol.23 No.1
This study examines the relation between labor union strength and conditional accounting conservatism. We argue that labor unions can have an increasing or decreasing effect on conditional conservatism due to considerations associated with layoffs and job security of union members. Using Basu’s (1997) asymmetric timeliness framework and multiple measures of union strength, we find that labor union strength leads to less conditional conservatism, even after controlling for known determinants of conditional conservatism. Our results are robust to endogeneity tests as well as a battery of other sensitivity tests. We further demonstrate that the negative relation likely results from unions’ ability to reduce the likelihood of layoffs. Overall, we provide fresh evidence about the impact of a key nonfinancial stakeholder, namely labor unions, on an important property of earnings.

Thermosensitive and magnetic nanoparticles as “smart” drug carriers have shown great potential in the field of controlled drug delivery owing to their unique properties. Previously, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-coated silica/magnetic nanoparticles (PNIPAM/SiO2/Fe3O4 nanoparticles) were synthesized using SiO2-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a template. The properties of these nanoparticles such as the transition of the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), biocompatibility, drug loading efficiency, and drug release kinetics were investigated in vitro for both targeted and controlled drug delivery. The release profile and the in vitro cancer cell inhibition activity of vitamin D3 loading for PNIPAM/SiO2/Fe3O4 nanoparticles were systemically studied. The loading and release behavior of vitamin D3 were found to be dependent on the LCST of PNIPAM/SiO2/Fe3O4 nanoparticles. HepG2 liver cancer cells were incubated with PNIPAM/SiO2/Fe3O4 nanoparticles loaded with vitamin D3 for 5 days, and cell viability significantly decreased, as observed by 3-(4,5-cimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays, which was further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM)images. In conclusion, the current study demonstrated that PNIPAM/SiO2/Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be used as potential drug delivery systems for controlled release.
Piperacillin-Tazobactam-Induced Linear IgA Bullous Dermatosis Supported by a T-Cell Activation Assay
( Yi-hsin Ho ),( Yun-wen Chiu ),( Han-nan Liu ) 대한피부과학회 2018 Annals of Dermatology Vol.30 No.5
Linear immunoglobulin (Ig) A bullous dermatosis (LABD) is a rare subepidermal autoimmune blistering disease characterized by linear IgA deposits at the basement membrane zone visualized with direct immunofluorescence (DIF). Most cases of LABD are idiopathic, but some are drug-induced with vancomycin being the most common causative agent. We herein report a patient presenting with blisters and erosive lesions, primarily in the intertriginous and flexor areas, consistent with a diagnosis of piperacillin-tazobactam-induced LABD based on the patient’s clinical course and histopathology, DIF, and in vitro T-cell activation assay (TAA) findings. Only one case of piperacillin-tazobactam-induced LABD has been previously reported. In addition to its rarity, our case was also unique in that the skin lesions occurred in the intertriginous and flexor areas, uncommon locations for typical adult patients with LABD, and TAA strongly suggested an association with the causative drug. This paper examines the relationship between the level of political connection of the board and chief executive officer (CEO) equity-based compensation. Using a sample of Taiwanese firms, the paper provides evidence that politically connected boards grant a lower proportion of equity-based compensation to CEOs. Political intervention can reduce the proportion of equity-based compensation and, thereby, can have negative consequences for the alignment between the interests of CEOs and shareholders in firms. The findings obtained in this paper could be useful to policy-makers in emerging economies, where there is wide scope for political intervention.
GreenIoT Architecture for Internet of Things Applications
( Yi-wei Ma ),( Jiann-liang Chen ),( Yung-sheng Lee ),( Hsin-yi Chang ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2016 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.10 No.2
A power-saving mechanism for smartphone devices is developed by analyzing the features of data that are received from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors devices to optimize the data processing policies. In the proposed GreenIoT architecture for power-saving in IoT, the power saving and feedback mechanism are implemented in the IoT middleware. When the GreenIoT application in the power-saving IoT architecture is launched, IoT devices collect the sensor data and send them to the middleware. After the scanning module in the IoT middleware has received the data, the data are analyzed by a feature evaluation module and a threshold analysis module. Based on the analytical results, the policy decision module processes the data in the device or in the cloud computing environment. The feedback mechanism then records the power consumed and, based on the history of these records, dynamically adjusts the threshold value to increase accuracy. Two smart living applications, a biomedical application and a smart building application, are proposed. Comparisons of data processed in the cloud computing environment show that the power-saving mechanism with IoT architecture reduces the power consumed by these applications by 24% and 9.2%.

Cultural intelligence can effectively solve cross-cultural problems, which encourages contractors to adapt to the new international market environment. However, in international projects, the effectiveness of cultural intelligence can be complicated or moderated by the host country's institutional environment. This study explores the impact of cultural intelligence on the performance of international construction projects and the moderating effect of institutional distance, then compares the differences between Chinese contractors and Korean contractors. In this paper, eleven hypotheses were proposed, and an empirical analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses and measure the impact of cultural intelligence on the performance of international construction projects and the moderating effect of institutional distance. The results from 144 valid questionnaires indicated that process capability and path capability in cultural intelligence have a significant positive impact on the performance of international construction projects, while formal institutional distance can positively moderate the relationship between position capability and international construction project performance. Moreover, Chinese and Korean contractors display significant differences in the moderating role of institutional distance. These findings provide theoretical support and strategic suggestions for not only contractors in China and Korea but for all international contractors seeking to improve project performance through cultural intelligence and institutional distance.
