To model and forecast a monthly pine sawtimber (PST) stumpage price, yt , data collected across 11 southern states in the U.S., we adopt a new semiparametric approach where the first phase adopts a nonparametric method called “Time Series Central Subspace with Covariates” (TSCS-C) to extract sufficient information about yt through a univariate time series {dt }, which is a linear combination of a set of past values of yt and a high dimensional covariate vector xt of sale characteristics. Then, {dt } alone is used as the predictor series to build a parametric nonlinear time series model for yt . This yields a new semiparametric nonlinear time series model for yt . Assessment in terms of out-of-sample forecasts of monthly PST stumpage prices show that our semiparametric model with the covariate xt has the smallest average forecasting error compared to another semiparametric nonlinear time series model without xt and two other parametric counterparts based on multiplicative seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average models with and without xt . This data underscores the ability of our semiparametric approach to first reduce the dimensionality of xt and a set of past values of yt significantly using the TSCS-C nonparametricmethodology and then to produce a superior nonlinear time series model.

Constrained layer damping is one of the passive techniques to control amplitude of vibration of structural components. In the present work an attempt has been made to quantify and compare damping ratios of composite-rubber-composite sandwich beam with that of pristine composite beam having nearly the same flexural stiffness and range of frequency of vibration from 20 Hz to 100 Hz. Length and thickness of sandwich and pristine beams in order to have the same flexural stiffness and desired frequency range of vibration were specifically designed. The damping ratio of each sandwich and pristine composite beams were measured experimentally using logarithmic decay and half-power bandwidth techniques.

We stand at the brink of a fundamental change in how medicine will be practiced. Over the next 5-20 years medicine will move from being largely reactive to being predictive, personalized, preventive and participatory (P4). Technology and new scientific strategies have always been the drivers of revolutions and this is certainly the case for P4 medicine, where a systems approach to disease, new and emerging technologies and powerful computational tools will open new windows for the investigation of disease. Systems approaches are driving the emergence of fascinating new technologies that will permit billions of measurements on each individual patient. The challenge for health information technology will be how to reduce this enormous amount of data to simple hypotheses about health and disease. We predict that emerging technologies, together with the systems approaches to diagnosis, therapy and prevention will lead to a down turn in the escalating costs of healthcare. In time we will be able to export P4 medicine to the developing world and it will become the foundation of global medicine. The "democratization" of healthcare will come from P4 medicine. Its first real emergence will require the unprecedented integration of biology, medicine, technology and computation. as well as societal issues of major importance: ethical, regulatory, public policy, economic, and others. In order to effectively move the P4 scientific agenda forward new strategic partnerships are now being created with the large-scale integration of complementary skills, technologies, computational tools, patient records and samples and analysis of societal issues. It is evident that the business plans of every sector of the healthcare industry will need to be entirely transformed over the next 10 years.and the extent to which this will be done by existing companies as opposed to newly created companies is a fascinating question.

Misalignments are a major concern, when air-coupled ultrasonic probes are deployed for transmission and reception of Lamb waves. Misalignments between the air-coupled probes result in reduction in amplitude and change in arrival time of the Lamb waves. This reduction in amplitude can give a false alarm in Non-destructive Testing (NDT) applications, if amplitude is the criterion for flaw or damage detection. In the present work, one of the probe’s (transmitter or receiver) position was kept fixed, and the other probe was rotated to introduce a misalignment termed ‘rotational misalignment’. This rotation had violated the co-planarity condition, resulting in reduction in amplitude of the received fundamental anti-symmetric mode (Ao) in an isotropic material plate. Interestingly, variation in amplitude of the Ao mode with the rotational misalignment angle revealed that, at certain angular locations, there exists a local maximum and local minimum resembling sync function. Subsequently, the angular location of occurrence of these is attributed to dispersion characteristics of the Ao mode.
