        Evolution of Chinese Urban System Since1949

        The spatial structure of the urban agglomerates in the Mainland China has changed comprehensively since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. This paper will focus on the spatial relations (including network relations and territorial relations) in the inside of the urban system, and classify the ranks of urban agglomeration of the Chinese urban system with the different value of Distance Friction Coefficients b. From the processes of the spatial evolvements of Chinese urban systems can it be speculated that the possibilities and quantity of new developing urban agglomerates are very restrictive in the decades, and the evolvement trend of urban agglomerates can be shown as following: (1) the original developing urban agglomerates will be further formed into shapes; (2)the original urban agglomerates will join with each others through spatial extensions, then form the megalopolises with broader scope.

Studies show that evaporative cooling system has advantage as the cooling system of wind power generator.

In this article, analysis on the two-phase flow heat transfer characteristics and security of the evaporative cooling technology are provided, the technology's advantage and feasibility are discussed.

        IODINE REMOVAL EFFICIENCY IN NON-SUBMERGED AND SUBMERGED SELF-PRIMING VENTURI SCRUBBER

        The objective of this conducted research is to study the iodine removal efficiency in a self-priming venturi scrubber for submerged and non-submerged operating conditions experimentally and theoretically. The alkaline solution is used as an absorbent, which is prepared by dissolving sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium thiosulphate ($Na2S_2O_3$) in water to remove the gaseous iodine ($I_2$) from the gas. Iodine removal efficiency is examined at various gas flow rates and inlet concentrations of iodine for submerged and non-submerged operating conditions. In the non-submerged venturi scrubber, only the droplets take part in iodine removal efficiency. However, in a submerged venturi scrubber condition, the iodine gas is absorbed from gas to droplets inside the venturi scrubber and from bubbles to surrounding liquid at the outlet of a venturi scrubber. Experimentally, it is observed that the iodine removal efficiency is greater in the submerged venturi scrubber as compare to a non-submerged venturi scrubber condition. The highest iodine removal efficiency of $0.99{\pm}0.001$ has been achieved in a submerged self-priming venturi scrubber condition. A mathematical correlation is used to predict the theoretical iodine removal efficiency in submerged and non-submerged conditions, and it is compared against the experimental results. The Wilkinson et al. correlation is used to predict the bubble diameter theoretically whereas the Nukiyama and Tanasawa correlation is used for droplet diameter. The mass transfer coefficient for the gas phase is calculated from the Steinberger and Treybal correlation. The calculated results for a submerged venturi scrubber agree well with experimental results but underpredicts in the case of the non-submerged venturi scrubber.

        Morphological and molecular characterization of the genus Coolia (Dinophyceae) from Bahía de La Paz, southwest Gulf of California

        The genus Coolia A. Meunier 1919 has a global distribution and is a common member of epiphytic dinoflagellate assemblages in neritic ecosystems. Coolia monotis is the type species of the genus and was the only known species for 76 years. Over the past few decades, molecular characterization has unveiled two species complexes that group morphologically very similar species, so their limits are often unclear. To provide new knowledge on the biogeography and species composition of the genus Coolia, 16 strains were isolated from Bahía de La Paz, Gulf of California. The species were identified by applying morphological and molecular approaches. The morphometric characteristics of all isolated Coolia species were consistent with the original taxa descriptions. Phylogenetic analyses (large subunit [LSU] rDNA D1 / D2 and internal transcribed spacer [ITS] 1 / 5.8S / ITS2) revealed a species assemblage comprising Coolia malayensis, C. palmyrensis, C. tropicalis, and the C. cf. canariensis lineage. This is the first report of Coolia palmyrensis and C. cf. canariensis in Mexico and C. tropicalis in the Gulf of California. Our results strengthen the biogeographical understanding of these potentially harmful epiphytic dinoflagellate species.

      • <i>Prorocentrum shikokuense</i> Hada and <i>P. donghaiense</i> Lu are junior synonyms of <i>P. obtusidens</i> Schiller, but not of <i>P. dentatum</i> Stein (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae)

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In Japanese, Chinese and Korean coastal waters, recurrent blooms of a small, elongate <I>Prorocentrum</I> species have been observed in recent years. In previous studies, this species has been respectively identified as <I>P. shikokuense</I>, <I>P. donghaiense</I> and <I>P. dentatum</I>, despite morphological similarity and identical rDNA sequences. To resolve the confusion, morphological features, including the architectural details of the periflagellar area, were examined and ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences were obtained from specimens collected from the East China Sea and Korean coast, and a strain established in the waters off the Canary Islands of Spain. In addition, the descriptions of the three species and allied species were reviewed. Morphological observations and a phylogeny based on the SSU, ITS region and LSU rDNA sequences revealed that the previously confused species and our studied strains are conspecific and that the morphology of strains identified as <I>P. dentatum</I> in the phylogenetic trees does not coincide with <I>P. dentatum sensu stricto</I>. The confusion can be traced back to Dodge (1975, p. 116), who considered <I>P. veloi, P. monacense</I> and <I>P. obtusidens</I> as junior heterotypic synonyms of <I>P. dentatum</I>. However, Dodge’s <I>P. dentatum</I> are closer to <I>P. obtusidens sensu stricto</I>, rather than <I>P. dentatum sensu stricto</I>. <I>P. obtusidens sensu stricto</I> can be distinguished from <I>P. dentatum sensu stricto</I> by its relatively small size, parallel sides towards the anterior and a blunt anterior extension on one side. This indicates that <I>P. obtusidens</I> should not be considered a synonym of <I>P. dentatum sensu stricto</I>. In addition, a comparison of the original descriptions of <I>P. obtusidens</I> and allied species allowed to conclude that small, elongate <I>Prorocentrum</I> from Japanese, Chinese and Korean coastal waters previously identified as <I>P. shikokuense</I>, <I>P. donghaiense</I>, <I>P. dentatum sensu</I> Yoo and Lee (1986) and the specimens studied herein, which share identical rDNA sequences, morphologically coincide with <I>P. obtusidens.</I> Therefore, it is proposed that <I>P. shikokuense</I> and <I>P. donghaiense</I> should be regarded as junior synonyms of <I>P. obtusidens.</I> </P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>Prorocentrum shikokuense</I> Hada, <I>P. donghaiense</I> Lu and <I>Prorocentrum obtusidens</I> Schiller are conspecific. </LI> <LI> <I>Prorocentrum obtusidens</I> is a senior to <I>P. shikokuense</I> and <I>P. donghaiense</I>. </LI> <LI> <I>Prorocentrum obtusidens</I> is a separate species from <I>P. dentatum sensu stricto</I>, <I>P. veloi</I> and <I>P. monacense</I>. </LI> <LI> The periflagellar area of <I>Prorocentrum obtusidens</I> consists of seven platelets bearing a wing-like structure and two platelets without a wing-like structure, one flagellar pore and one accessory pore. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Amphidinium stirisquamtum sp. nov. (Dinophyceae), a new marine sand-dwelling dinoflagellate with a novel type of body scale

        Amphidinium species are amongst the most abundant benthic dinoflagellates in marine intertidal sandy ecosystems. Some of them produce a variety of bioactive compounds that have both harmful effects and pharmaceutical potential. In this study, Amphidinium cells were isolated from intertidal sand collected from the East China Sea. The two strains established were subjected to detailed examination by light, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The vegetative cells had a minute, irregular, and triangular-shaped epicone deflected to the left, thus fitting the description of Amphidinium sensu stricto. These strains are distinguished from other Amphidinium species by combination characteristics: (1) longitudinal flagellum inserted in the lower third of the cell; (2) icicle-shaped scales, 276 ± 17 nm in length, on the cell body surface; (3) asymmetrical hypocone with the left side longer than the right; and (4) presence of immotile cells. Therefore, they are described here as Amphidinium stirisquamtum sp. nov. The molecular tree inferred from small subunit rRNA, large subunit rRNA, and internal transcribed spacer-5.8S sequences revealed that A. stirisquamtum is grouped together with the type species of Amphidinium, A. operculatum, in a fully supported clade, but is distantly related to other Amphidinium species bearing body scale. Live A. stirisquamtum cells greatly affected the survival of rotifers and brine shrimp, their primary grazers, making them more susceptible to predation by the higher tropic level consumers in the food web. This will increase the risk of introducing toxicity, and consequently, the bio-accumulation of toxins through marine food webs.
