Extraction of p-coumaric acid from agricultural residues and separation using ‘sugaring out’

        Pradip B. Dhamole,Shital Chavan,Rashmi G. Patil,Hao Feng,Mahesh Bule,Pallavi Kinninge 한국화학공학회 2016 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.33 No.6

We investigated the extraction of para-coumaric acid (pCA) from different agriculture residues (corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, sorghum stalk, pearl millet stalk, green gram shell, groundnut shell, sesame shell) using sugarcane bagasse alkaline hydrolysis and separation of pCA using sugaring out - a new phase separation method. Primary screening of different feed stocks was by alkaline hydrolysis with 2M NaOH for 6 h at room temperature. Sugarcane baggase resulted into significant amount of pCA (1.1 g/L) and small amount of ferulic acid (FA) (0.23 g/L). The optimized alkaline hydrolysis conditions (2 M NaOH and 16 h) resulted into maximum pCA release of 2.0 g/L. The pCA was separated from alkaline hydrolysate using sugaring out, a two phase separation method that results in aqueous phase and the organic solvent (acetonitrile) phase. Sugaring-out separated more than 90% of the pCA from the alkaline hydrolysate. Results of HPLC using standard pCA and FA showed that the main component of the separated top (organic solvent) phase was pCA rather than FA.

Association between Genetic Polymorphism in the Swine Leukocyte Antigen-DRA Gene and Piglet Diarrhea in Three Chinese Pig Breeds

        Yang, Q.L.,Zhao, S.G.,Wang, D.W.,Feng, Y.,Jiang, T.T.,Huang, X.Y.,Gun, S.B. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2014 Animal Bioscience Vol.27 No.9

The swine leukocyte antigen (SLA)-DRA locus is noteworthy among other SLA class II loci for its limited variation and has not been investigated in depth. This study was investigated to detect polymorphisms of four exons of SLA-DRA gene and its association with piglet diarrhea in Landrace, Large White and Duroc pigs. No polymorphisms were detected in exon 3, while 2 SNPs (c.178G>A and c.211T>C), 2 SNPs (c.3093A>C and c.3104C>T) and 5 SNPs (c.4167A>G, c.4184A>G, c.4194A>G, c.4246A>G and c.4293G>A) were detected in exon 1, exon 2 and exon 4 respectively, and 1 SNP (c.4081T>C) in intron 3. Statistical results showed that genotype had significant effect on piglet diarrhea, individuals with genotype BC had a higher diarrhea score when compared with the genotypes AA, AB, AC and CC. Futhermore, genotype AC had a higher diarrhea score than the genotype CC in exon 1 (p<0.05); diarrhea scores of genotype AA and BB were higher than those of genotypes AC and CC in exon 2 (p<0.05); individuals with genotype AA had a higher diarrhea score than individuals with genotype AB and BB in exon 4 (p<0.05). Fourteen common haplotypes were founded by haplotype constructing of all SNPs in the three exons, its association with piglet diarrhea appeared that Hap2, 5, 8, 10, and 14 may be the susceptible haplotypes and Hap9 may be the resistant haplotype to piglet diarrhea. The genetic variations identified of the SLA-DRA gene may potentially be functional mutations related to piglet diarrhea.

Research on transmission paths of a coupled beam-cylindrical shell system by power flow analysis

        G. P. Feng,Z. Y. Zhang,Y. Chen,H. X. Hua 대한기계학회 2009 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.23 No.8

A power flow analysis based on a substructure approach is performed to exhibit vibration transmission in a complex coupled beam-cylindrical shell system. The system is divided into a shell substructure and a beam substructure, which are coupled by three spring-dampers. The theoretical receptance function of each substructure with a free-free interface condition is formulated by modal analysis to describe the dynamical behavior. On the basis of the receptance functions of the two substructures as well as synthesis through the geometrical compatibility and force balance conditions at the coupling interfaces, the dynamic characteristics of the coupled system are calculated. Both the input and transmitted powers within the system are estimated, and the influences of the excitation locations, the stiffness and loss factor of the spring-dampers on the vibration transmission are investigated as well.

Buckling of axial compressed cylindrical shells with stepwise variable thickness

        H.G. Fan,Z.P. Chen,W.Z. Feng,F. Zhou,X.L. Shen,G.W. Cao 국제구조공학회 2015 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.54 No.1

This paper focuses on an analytical research on the critical buckling load of cylindrical shells with stepwise variable wall thickness under axial compression. An arctan function is established to describe the thickness variation along the axial direction of this kind of cylindrical shells accurately. By using the methods of separation of variables, small parameter perturbation and Fourier series expansion, analytical formulas of the critical buckling load of cylindrical shells with arbitrary axisymmetric thickness variation under axial compression are derived. The analysis is based on the thin shell theory. Analytic results show that the critical buckling load of the uniform shell with constant thickness obtained from this paper is identical with the classical solution. Two important cases of thickness variation pattern are also investigated with these analytical formulas and the results coincide well with those obtained from other authors. The cylindrical shells with stepwise variable wall thickness, which are widely used in actual engineering, are studied by this method and the analytical formulas of critical buckling load under axial compression are obtained. Furthermore, an example is presented to illustrate the effects of each strake’s length and thickness on the critical buckling load.

Re-assessing the enhanced permeability and retention effect in peripheral arterial disease using radiolabeled long circulating nanoparticles

        England, C.G.,Im, H.J.,Feng, L.,Chen, F.,Graves, S.A.,Hernandez, R.,Orbay, H.,Xu, C.,Cho, S.Y.,Nickles, R.J.,Liu, Z.,Lee, D.S.,Cai, W. IPC Science and Technology Press 2016 Biomaterials Vol.100 No.-

<P>As peripheral arterial disease (PAD) results in muscle ischemia and neovascularization, it has been claimed that nanoparticles can passively accumulate in ischemic tissues through the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. At this time, a quantitative evaluation of the passive targeting capabilities of nanoparticles has not been reported in PAD. Using a murine model of hindlimb ischemia, we quantitatively assessed the passive targeting capabilities of Cu-64-labeled PEGylated reduced graphene oxide iron oxide nanoparticles (Cu-64-RGO-IONP-PEG) through the EPR effect using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. Serial laser Doppler imaging was performed to monitor changes in blood perfusion upon surgical induction of ischemia. Nanoparticle accumulation was assessed at 3, 10, and 17 days post-surgery and found to be highest at 3 days post-surgery, with the ischemic hindlimb displaying an accumulation of 14.7 +/- 0.5% injected dose per gram (%ID/g). Accumulation of Cu-64-RGO-IONP-PEG was lowest at 17 days post-surgery, with the ischemic hindlimb displaying only 5.1 +/- 0.5%ID/g. Furthermore, nanoparticle accumulation was confirmed by photoacoustic imaging (PA). The combination of PET and serial Doppler imaging showed that nanoparticle accumulation in the ischemic hindlimb negatively correlated with blood perfusion. Thus, we quantitatively confirmed that Cu-64-RGO-IONP-PEG passively accumulated in ischemic tissue via the EPR effect, which is reduced as the perfusion normalizes. As Cu-64-RGO-IONP-PEG displayed substantial accumulation in the ischemic tissue, this nanoparticle platform may function as a future theranostic agent, providing both imaging and therapeutic applications. G.K.H. Pang,C.W. Tai,Y. Wang,W.L. Liu,Z.T. Song,S.L. Feng,H.L.W. Chan,C.L. Choy 한국물리학회 2006 Current Applied Physics Vol.6 No.3

In this study, the structural properties of single-crystal SrTiO3 implanted with H+ have been investigated by transmission electronmicrocopy (TEM). The investigation was carried out on an as-implanted sample and samples after annealing at 500.C and 700 .Cfrom the implanted energy similar to the process in the case of silicon. The as-implanted sample shows large out-of-plane strain alsosimilar to the report in silicon. The microcavities are lled with amorphous material as the result of complicated interaction of the defectsduring the annealing.

Stochastic optimal control analysis of a piezoelectric shell subjected to stochastic boundary perturbations

        Z.G. Ying,J. Feng,W.Q. Zhu,Y.Q. Ni 국제구조공학회 2012 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.9 No.3

The stochastic optimal control for a piezoelectric spherically symmetric shell subjected to stochastic boundary perturbations is constructed, analyzed and evaluated. The stochastic optimal control problem on the boundary stress output reduction of the piezoelectric shell subjected to stochastic boundary displacement perturbations is presented. The electric potential integral as a function of displacement is obtained to convert the differential equations for the piezoelectric shell with electrical and mechanical coupling into the equation only for displacement. The displacement transformation is constructed to convert the stochastic boundary conditions into homogeneous ones, and the transformed displacement is expanded in space to convert further the partial differential equation for displacement into ordinary differential equations by using the Galerkin method. Then the stochastic optimal control problem of the piezoelectric shell in partial differential equations is transformed into that of the multi-degree-of-freedom system. The optimal control law for electric potential is determined according to the stochastic dynamical programming principle. The frequency-response function matrix, power spectral density matrix and correlation function matrix of the controlled system response are derived based on the theory of random vibration. The expressions of mean-square stress, displacement and electric potential of the controlled piezoelectric shell are finally obtained to evaluate the control effectiveness. Numerical results are given to illustrate the high relative reduction in the root-mean-square boundary stress of the piezoelectric shell subjected to stochastic boundary displacement perturbations by the optimal electric potential control.

H-infinity Discrete Time Fuzzy Controller Design Based on Bilinear Matrix Inequality

Chen M.,Feng G.,Zhou S.S. Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems 2006 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL of FUZZY LOGIC and INTELLIGE Vol.6 No.2

This paper presents an $H_{\infty}$ controller synthesis method for discrete time fuzzy dynamic systems based on a piecewise smooth Lyapunov function. The basic idea of the proposed approach is to construct controllers for the fuzzy dynamic systems in such a way that a Piecewise smooth Lyapunov function can be used to establish the global stability with $H_{\infty}$ performance of the resulting closed loop fuzzy control systems. It is shown that the control laws can be obtained by solving a set of Bilinear Matrix Inequalities (BMIs). An example is given to illustrate the application of the proposed method.
